'iPhone XI' and 'XI Max' Leaks, Screen Time Controversy, Farewell Aperture - MacRumors

New renders have surfaced that depict the tentatively named "iPhone XI" and "iPhone XI Max," providing a side-by-side comparison of what are expected to be the 2019 versions of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.

The renders suggest that both new iPhones will feature a redesigned circular-shaped mute switch, similar to the one on older-generation iPads. The thickness of each device is also expected to increase very slightly, possibly to accommodate larger batteries and two-way charging.

While the camera bump is rumored to have a larger, square-shaped design, it appears to be less protruding, as the rear panel of each device is said to be formed out of a "single piece of glass."

Apple Shares More Details on Parental Control App Crackdown
default.jpgThe New York Times this week reported that Apple has removed or restricted many of the most popular parental control apps on the App Store since launching its own Screen Time feature in iOS 12 last year, raising concerns over anticompetitive behavior.

However, in both an email response from Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller and a subsequent press release, Apple indicated that it recently became aware that some parental control apps were using a technology called Mobile Device Management or "MDM" that puts users' privacy and security at risk.

In response, a handful of parental control app developers and former Apple executive Tony Fadell have called on Apple to make the APIs behind its Screen Time feature available for use in third-party apps.

Apple Says Aperture Won't Run in Future macOS Versions After Mojave
default.jpg In a new support document, Apple has indicated that its discontinued photo editing suite Aperture will not run in future versions of macOS after Mojave.

The support document provides users with steps to migrate Aperture libraries to Apple's newer Photos app for Mac or to Adobe Lightroom Classic.

Apple ceased development of Aperture in June 2014 and removed the software from the Mac App Store in April 2015 after the Photos app launched.

Apple Reports 2Q 2019 Results: $11.56B Profit, $58B Revenue as Services Revenue Hits All-Time High
default.jpg Apple continues to be a cash-generating machine, bringing in revenue of $58 billion in the quarter ending March 30, 2019.

iPhone revenue was down 17% year-over-year, but Apple's services revenue hit a new all-time high of $11.5 billion, iPad revenue had its highest growth rate in almost six years, and its "Wearables, Home, and Accessories" category set a new March quarter revenue record of $5.1 billion

Overall, it was a successful quarter for Apple, which exceeded most Wall Street expectations and saw its stock rise as much as 7% post earnings — although it has since pared some of those gains.

Qualcomm Got $4.5 Billion From Apple Settlement According to Earnings Release
default.jpg A few weeks ago, Apple and Qualcomm jointly announced an agreement to dismiss all litigation between the two companies worldwide, along with multiyear licensing and chipset supply agreements.

The settlement included a payment from Apple to Qualcomm that we've since learned was $4.5 billion. On an earnings call this week, Apple CEO Tim Cook said "we feel good about the resolution."

This should pave the way for the first 5G-enabled iPhones with Qualcomm and possibly Samsung modems in 2020.
