March 21 Media Event, 'iPhone SE' Cases, Dual-Lens Camera Concept, Larger OLED iPhone Displays? - MacRumors

Apple has officially invited members of the media to a special event on Monday, March 21 at the company's Cupertino campus, where it is expected to introduce a new 4-inch "iPhone SE" and a new 9.7-inch iPad perhaps positioned a smaller iPad Pro. A few other announcements such as new Apple Watch bands could also be made at the event.

Apple's media event kicks off at 10:00 AM Pacific time on March 21, and Apple will be streaming it live on the web, iOS devices, and Apple TV. We'll also have full coverage of the event with a live blog, Twitter coverage, and news stories, and we've created a Facebook event to make it easy to get reminders and updates about the event and invite your friends to follow along!

First Mac Ransomware Found in Transmission BitTorrent Client
A major story over the past weekend was the discovery of the first major case of "ransomware" for the Mac. The malware, which threatens to hold a user's files hostage by encrypting them and demanding payment to unlock them, was bundled into popular BitTorrent client Transmission when the developers' server was compromised. Apple and Transmission's developers moved quickly to address the threat, and as a result, and it appears only about 6,500 users downloaded the infected software before it was removed.

iPhone SE Case Renderings From Spigen Support iPhone 5s-Style Design
With less than two weeks to go until the expected introduction of the new 4-inch "iPhone SE," conflicting rumors about the device's design persist. Third-party case manufacturers have developed two separate designs for the device, with one appearing very similar to the iPhone 5s and the other looking more like a smaller iPhone 6. Spigen appears to be first high-profile case maker to place its bets, opting to build its cases around the iPhone 5s-style design.

Apple's Proposed Dual Camera Interface Brought to Life in Video Demo
Apple has been rumored to be bringing a dual-lens rear camera to at least the larger model of the iPhone 7 later this year, and we dug up a recent Apple patent that shows one possibility for how the lenses might work together. Our video demo shows how lenses with different focal lengths could allow for side-by-side video of both wide angle and zoomed content. We don't know if this is what Apple will ultimately do, but it's definitely a very cool idea the company has been looking at.

In other iPhone 7 news, we're now starting to see the first third-party cases surfacing. It's hard to tell much about the overall look of the device, but the cases do support rumors of Apple removing the traditional headphone jack and perhaps replacing it with a second speaker.

5.8-Inch iPhone With OLED Display Rumored for Launch in 2017 or 2018
Rumors of Apple shifting to an OLED display for the iPhone in 2017 or 2018 continue to circulate, and a new report claims we could see an even larger 5.8-inch display as part of that transition. Display expert Ray Soneira speculates one way Apple could use the larger display is with a new design that takes advantage of the properties of flexible OLED displays to wrap the screen around the sides of the device. It sounds pretty crazy, but who knows what Apple's up to.

OWC has launched the first aftermarket flash storage upgrades for Apple's recent Retina MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, enabling users to boost their notebooks up to 1TB of storage. It takes a bit of work to open up the machines and swap out the custom drive Apple uses, but OWC's kit includes all of the necessary tools. An optional enclosure is also available to allow you to use your old Apple drive as an external SSD.
