iPhone SE and iPhone 7 Rumors, Media Event Moved to March 21, Apple Breaks Macs' Ethernet - MacRumors

Apple's upcoming 4-inch iPhone, thought to be called either the "iPhone SE" or "iPhone 5se," continued to be a major focus of rumors over the past week, with frequently reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo weighing in with his beliefs that the device will carry very similar specs to the iPhone 6s including a 12-megapixel rear camera. Kuo believes the device will be priced at $400-500, in line with current iPhone 5s pricing. We did get our first major part leak this week in the form of the iPhone SE display panel, which appears to confirm no support for 3D Touch.

Otherwise, rumors about the device's overall appearance continue to conflict, with some advocating something very similar to the iPhone 5s design while others place it appearing much more like a smaller iPhone 6. We've seen some renderings of the different possibilities and even taken our own shot at reconciling some of these rumors. We're also starting to see the first actual iPhone SE cases from third-party manufacturers, but both design possibilities are represented in the available cases.

Apple's Media Event to Be Held March 21, Not March 15
While early rumors pegged Apple's upcoming media event as being scheduled for March 15, it appears the company has changed its plans and is now looking to hold the event on Monday, March 21 at the Town Hall auditorium on its main Cupertino campus. Apple is expected to make several product announcements at the event, including the new 4-inch "iPhone SE," a new 9.7-inch iPad perhaps positioned as a smaller version of the iPad Pro introduced late last year, and a few Apple Watch-related announcements.

High-End iPhone 7 Plus With Dual Cameras Could Be Called 'iPhone Pro'
We've been hearing rumors that at least some models of the larger iPhone 7 Plus expected to be introduced around the usual September timeframe may include a dual-lens rear camera, and a new report claims this unique variant could carry an "iPhone Pro" name to distinguish it from the regular iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Dual-lens cameras like on this "iPhone Pro" and Huawei's upcoming P9 smartphone are expected to usher in a new wave of "killer apps" that can take advantage of the technology for a variety of purposes.

A more general rumor focused on the iPhone 7 supports some other recent claims, including that the device will include a flush rear camera and a second speaker replacing the headphone jack. This new report also claims that the iPhone 7's Lightning port will be slimmer, but it's unclear whether this would mean any difference for the connector and cables themselves.

Security Update Briefly Breaks Ethernet Port on iMacs and MacBook Pros
Apple late last week pushed out a quiet automatic security update that amazingly blacklisted the company's own Ethernet driver for a number of Macs, breaking Ethernet functionality once those machines had been rebooted. The company quickly fixed the problem with another update, but it was remarkable that the errant update slipped through at all. Apple acknowledged the error in a support document and provided instructions to help users make sure their machines have been updated to the patched version.

WWDC is probably just three months away, and Apple remains hard at work on iOS 10 and OS X 10.12, both of which are expected to see their initial unveilings at the conference keynote. We're seeing increasing traffic to MacRumors from devices running both upcoming operating systems, and we'll be keeping our eyes on that traffic as we get closer to WWDC.

In other iOS 10 news, one of our more popular articles this week was a concept video showing off some ideas of how Apple could improve Control Center in the next update. It's a wish list video not based on any specific rumors, but it's thoughtful and beautifully done.

Recent Night Shift Changes in iOS 9.3 Betas: Disabled in Low Power Mode, Control Center Tweaks
Apple is accelerating its pace for seeding new operating system betas to testers, this week pushing out the fifth beta of iOS 9.3. This next update will include a new Night Shift mode that automatically shifts the color temperature of the screen in the evening to minimize disturbance of sleep cycles, and Apple has been making some tweaks to Night Shift's features over the past couple of betas, including disabling it when the device is in Low Power Mode and changing the way the Control Center toggle functions.

Other new betas released this week include the fifth test versions of OS X 10.11.4, tvOS 9.2, and watchOS 2.2.
