Apple Unveils $349 HomePod Smart Speaker to be Available in December
We weren't 100% sure Apple was going to introduce its Siri smart speaker at WWDC, but it did indeed make an appearance and it's called HomePod. In line with rumors, it looks like a squat little Mac Pro with a mesh exterior that uses spatial awareness, an upward-firing woofer, and seven tweeters around the base for premium sound. HomePod can directly access Apple Music content and includes home assistant functionality via Siri commands. Priced at $349, HomePod is launching in the US, UK, and Australia in December, with more countries to follow.

Apple Reveals 'macOS High Sierra' With APFS, Metal 2, and Refinements to Safari and Other Apps
It sounded like a joke at first, but the successor to macOS Sierra is known as High Sierra, and it's coming this fall. Among the major changes are the adoption of the new Apple File System (APFS) that has already made its way to iOS, new support for the H.265 format for more efficient 4K video support, and Metal 2 to bring top-tier VR support to macOS.

Many of the core macOS apps including Safari, Photos, Mail, Notes, and Siri are also gaining new features and refinements. High Sierra will be a free download for the public in the fall, and it's available to developers now.

New Macs and iPads Coming, macOS 10.13 Wishlist, Siri Speaker Rumors, MacRumors WWDC Mixer - MacRumors

logo.png
feature.jpg
Amid rumors of new Mac notebooks and iPads at next Monday's WWDC keynote, Apple has registered several new devices in regulatory filings with the Eurasian Economic Commission. Five Mac models, four iPad models, and a new wireless keyboard are included in the filings, but it is unclear exactly which product lines they refer to.

Delivery estimates for 15-inch MacBook Pro models slipped to June 5–8 last weekend, perhaps in a sign of Apple delaying orders until the new models are introduced on Monday. In addition to updated MacBook Pros, we're also expecting updated MacBook models and perhaps even a minor bump to the MacBook Air to prolong that line's life. New iPads should include the rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro and a likely update to the 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

'iPhone 8' Renders Offer Direct Size Comparisons With iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8
default.jpg In the absence of part leaks, we're continuing to see renderings based on rumored design specs for the upcoming "iPhone 8," and a new batch offers some nice size comparisons to both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, as well as Samsung's latest Galaxy S8 family.

Uncertainty still remains as to whether Touch ID functionality will be built into the display or perhaps moved to a dedicated sensor on the rear of the device, but the latest rumor from chip supplier TSMC says Apple has indeed succeeded in embedding fingerprint sensing right into the display.

Finally, Apple is said to be working on a dedicated "neural engine" chip to power AI-related tasks like speech and facial recognition for improved performance and lower impact on battery life. It's unclear whether this chip will be ready in time for the iPhone 8, so we'll have to wait to see how that plays out.

default.jpg We're still not sure whether Apple's Siri-based smart speaker will be introduced during Monday's keynote, but the device is reportedly entering production ahead of a full launch later this year. An introduction at WWDC could come if Apple wants to allow third-party developers to begin building out support for the device before it launches. The speaker is expected to include virtual surround sound technology and serve as a hub for HomeKit functionality, but will apparently not include a full display.

Intel's Upcoming Coffee Lake Processors Up to 30% Faster Than Kaby Lake Chips Coming to Mac Notebooks

One next-generation family, Coffee Lake, is reportedly up to 30 percent faster than the equivalent Kaby Lake chips, but we'll have to wait until later in the year for more detail on the new chips and likely until the end of this year or early next year before they start making their way into Macs.

Alleged Molds Purport to Show Relative Sizes of Apple's 2017 iPhones
We're continuing to get better looks at the so-called "iPhone 8," and this week we saw some alleged casing molds that show a size comparison among the iPhone 8 and more traditional "iPhone 7s" and "iPhone 7s Plus" models. If accurate, the iPhone 8 would be slightly larger than the current iPhone 7 and its iPhone 7s successor.

Beyond the molds, we're also seeing dummy units and clones that are giving us a decent idea of what we might see in the fall when the iPhone 8 debuts. We've also seen an iPhone 8 case compared to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. We're still waiting on actual part leaks, however, and once those start coming in we should have a better idea of how the new iPhone 8 will come together.

'iPhone 9' Rumored to Come in 5.28-Inch and 6.46-Inch Display Sizes in 2018
It sounds crazy considering we're still months away from the introduction of the iPhone 8, but we're already hearing our first rumors about next year's "iPhone 9." While we don't have a lot of confidence in this rumor yet, it's a tantalizing one claiming Apple is looking to introduce two sizes of OLED displays on next year's models, coming in at 5.28 and 6.46 inches. The sizes suggest we could see something similar to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus device sizes but with larger full-front screens.

Scrolling Changes Coming to Mobile Safari in Future Update
Scrolling in Safari in iOS has long been a bit different than in other places within the system, and it looks like that's going to change in an upcoming version of the built-in browser. New Notebooks and 10.5" iPad Pro at WWDC, iPhone 8 and iPad mini Rumors, Apple Park - MacRumors

We've been expecting an updated MacBook for a while now, but it looks like we're going to be seeing even more than that at WWDC next month, with Apple reportedly also introducing an updated MacBook Pro and possibly a new MacBook Air.

All three updates are expected to be relatively minor speed-bumped versions of the current models, particularly in the case of the MacBook Pro which is only just over six months old.

There's no word on any desktop Mac updates at WWDC, although Apple has said it has an iMac update in the works for later this year (likely in the fall), while a completely redesigned Mac Pro isn't due until after 2017.

Ming-Chi Kuo Says Apple Likely to Unveil 10.5" iPad Pro and Touchscreen Siri Smart Speaker at WWDC
Relatively reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously said there is a greater than 50 percent chance Apple will show off its Siri smart speaker at WWDC next month, and now he says Apple's much-rumored 10.5-inch iPad Pro has a greater than 70 percent chance of appearing at the event.

Rumors on the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, which is said to be roughly the same size as the current 9.7-inch model but with smaller bezels around the display, have been split on the timing for its introduction. Some rumors had suggested it could launch this spring, while others pointed toward a debut at WWDC or even in the fall, but it now looks like it could be coming soon.

iPhone 8 Predicted to Cost $999 For 128GB And $1,099 For 256GB, With No 32GB Model
iPhone 8 rumors are slowing down a bit in recent weeks, although this week saw one analyst report claiming Apple will likely offer only a 128 GB model at $999 and a 256 GB model at $1099, leaving the lower price points to more conservatively updated "iPhone 7s" models.

The pricing estimates are undoubtedly guesses, but it certainly seems like the design innovations and new technology rumored for the iPhone 8 could drive Apple's costs higher, and pricing is one way Apple can differentiate between the iPhone 8 and 7s models.

Apple Releases iOS 10.3.2 With Multiple Bug Fixes and Security Updates
After over a month of beta testing, Apple this week rolled out a series of operating system updates, led by iOS 10.3.2 and macOS 10.12.5. Apple also pushed out watchOS 3.2.2 and tvOS 10.2.1 to complete the set, with all four releases primarily focusing on bug fixes and security improvements.

Even with WWDC right around the corner where Apple will undoubtedly show off iOS 11, macOS 10.13, and more, the company is still moving ahead with new bug fix updates, as seen in a new round of betas including iOS 10.3.3 and macOS 10.12.6. Apple is unlikely to make any more significant feature updates, however, saving those for the major operating system updates previewed next month and released to the public in the fall.

Apple Rumored to Discontinue iPad Mini
The fate of the iPad mini has been up in the air for some time, with some reports suggesting it could get the "Pro" treatment seen on its larger 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch siblings, while others have suggested it could simply fade away as customers lean toward "Plus-sized" iPhones and larger-screened iPads. A new rumor comes down in the latter camp, claiming Apple will not be making any further updates to the iPad mini. The report's source is unclear, however, on whether the current iPad mini 4 will be discontinued entirely in the relatively near future or if Apple will continue to sell it for some time as a relatively low-cost option and for those who do prefer that size of tablet.
