iOS 12.0.1 Released, New Apple Pencil, Mac Sales Plummet, Nike+ Apple Watch - MacRumors

Apple this week released the first update to iOS 12 in the form of iOS 12.0.1. While the update doesn't include new features, it does address some significant bugs including problems with iPhone XS and XS Max failing to charge when a Lightning cable is plugged in and preferring to connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks rather than faster 5 GHz networks.

The update also puts the ".?123" key on the iPad keyboard back to its expected spot after it was moved in iOS 12.0, and fixes issues with video subtitles and Bluetooth.

How to Make Remote Work Work Well
default.jpg

Commute time? Zero. Meeting room? Mac camera. Coworker? Kevin the cat. Coffee pot? All yours. You're a remote worker, and life is good. Almost.

Maintaining a work-life balance and keeping track of faraway tasks can be tricky without having a remote routine down pat. And even if you are pretty comfortable with how things are rolling, there's always room for improvement. It's likely you'll need to connect to the office via a VPN — Shimo is an advanced such client that allows custom trigger rules and multiple simultaneous servers. Grabbing files via FTP? Bookmark various connections with Forklift and log in with a single click.

The work itself has to be delivered somehow, and instead of catapulting large files, try something like BetterZip to tightly wrap those media-rich reports. Juggling content on the default clipboard isn't necessary either — Paste takes care of everything thrown at it via ⌘C and displays it beautifully for quick reference.

The right remote methods make all the difference. Explore Setapp for a suite of the best Mac apps available — try out 100+ apps for free during a weeklong trial. Then pay one steady monthly fee. Clear up your work schedule and go play with Kevin. 😺

Apple Pencil 2 With AirPods-Like Pairing Expected to Launch Alongside iPad Pro With Face ID
default.jpg We've been expecting new iPad Pro models to be released in the very near future, and a new report claims they will be accompanied by an updated Apple Pencil capable of proximity pairing similar to that used in AirPods. The current Apple Pencil must be physically connected to an iPad in order to set up or switch pairing.

Potentially supporting this rumor is a set of regulatory filings coming out of China. The filings cover several new tablet models and an unspecified "Bluetooth device" that could be the updated Apple Pencil.

Apple's Mac Sales Down in Q3 2018 Amid a Lack of Update
default.jpg We're really hoping to see some new Macs alongside the updated iPad Pro models, but in the meantime, Mac sales are plummeting, with research firms Gartner (8.5%) and IDC (11.6%) estimating major drops in worldwide Mac shipments for the July–September quarter when compared to the same period in 2017.

The MacBook Pro was updated in July, but other than that and the iMac Pro, every other Mac model is well over a year old. We've been hearing rumors about iMac and MacBook updates, as well as an all-new Mac mini and a new low-cost notebook that could appear as either a new MacBook Air or part of the MacBook family. So if Apple is indeed planning a media event for later this month, it seems it'll have a lot to show off.

Apple Denies Report Claiming Chinese Spies Planted Microchips in iCloud Servers
default.jpg There's a pretty crazy dispute going on right now over a Bloomberg Businessweek report claiming that the Chinese military worked to tamper with motherboards being manufactured by Supermicro and which ended up in servers purchased by nearly 30 companies including Apple and Amazon.

Bloomberg is standing by its story even as Apple and Amazon have strenuously denied they ever discovered any such chips in their servers. Besides the companies, government officials in several countries have similarly stated they have no evidence of any such plot. The denials from Apple and others are so strong that it's difficult to believe they're being misleading, but Bloomberg hasn't backed down from its claims.
