Following the release of the iPhone XS and XS Max, a number of users discovered that their devices sometimes failed to charge if the Lightning cable was plugged in while the phone's display was off. The issue was quickly found to affect other devices running iOS 12, although its appearance is sporadic.

The charging issue is reportedly fixed in the latest iOS 12.1 beta released this week, so all users can expect to see it addressed fairly soon once the update is released to the public.

Our Minds Are Fickle Things, but Not Without the Ability to Be Mindfully Guided
default.jpg

Apple's introduction of Screen Time to iOS 12 is a confirmation of the increasing rate at which we've become subsumed by the mini worlds within our devices. Concentration is an increasingly scarce commodity and, like anything of great value, there are easier ways of acquiring it if one knows where to look.

Since Screen Time didn't ship with macOS Mojave, Focus fills the gap. It offers intelligent tracking of your daily digital activity and allows you to self-impose restrictions on distracting websites. Gawk at the abundance of Lo-Fi Hiphop YouTube channels or pare down your ambient sound with Noizio. Employ HazeOver to highlight what matters on-screen. However you choose to dance around distractions, do so with diligence.

There is no one-size-fits-all method—most of us find peace piecing together the various systems that best fit our productive process. The best way to find the best systems is to try them all. Focus, Noizio, HazeOver, Be Focused, GoodTask, and many more live free within Setapp. It's not as hard to improve concentration when you know where to look.

iPhone XS Users Complain About Skin-Smoothing Selfie Camera
default.jpg iPhone XS users are also discussing the apparent skin-smoothing behavior seen in photos from the front camera on their devices, with some users suggesting Apple might be using a "beauty filter" to try to improve selfies.

According to Sebastiaan de With, a developer behind the popular camera app Halide, there is no intentional beauty filter being applied, but the smoother look is a result of noise reduction and other techniques used in the iPhone XS camera such as automatically merging multiple exposures to create an "ideal" photo.

Apple is reportedly looking into user complaints and could certainly tweak the camera behavior in a software update, so we'll have to see whether Apple makes any changes based on the feedback.

Watch the Apple Watch Series 4 Smoke Older Apple Watches in Speed Comparison
default.jpg In one of our latest videos over on our YouTube channel, we put all five Apple Watch generations side by side and put them through a speed comparison, looking at how long it took each to start up and open apps. We saw minor speed improvements for the new Series 4 compared to last year's Series 3, but massive gains compared to earlier models. So if you're currently using a Series 0, 1, or 2 Apple Watch and are tired of things feeling sluggish, you might want to think seriously about upgrading.

In another of our videos, we took a look at the two new "Infograph" watch faces for the new Apple Watch Series 4. The faces take full advantage of the larger display on the new model, with the Infograph face offering room for up to eight complications surrounding and within an analog clock while the Infograph Modular face allows for an additional small complication and a more information-rich version of the large center complication compared to the traditional Modular face.

When to Expect Apple's Rumored October Event Based on Prior Years
default.jpgFollowing last month's iPhone and Apple Watch event, Apple still has a number of announcements to make, including rumored updated iPad Pro and Mac models. That typically means a follow-up October event, so we took a look back at the history of these October events to predict when we might see one.

The week of October 15 is a distinct possibility, with Tuesday, October 16 being the most likely day ahead of the October 19 iPhone XR pre-order launch. The following week would also have been a good option, but Tim Cook will be in Brussels on Wednesday, October 24 to speak at a conference. And finally, the last few days of the month in the week after that might be another good opportunity, sneaking in just before Apple's November 1 earnings announcement.
