iPad Pro to Lose Headphone Jack?, Apple Valued at $1 Trillion, Strong Earnings but Weak Mac Sales - MacRumors

logo.png
We're expecting significant changes to the iPad Pro later this year, with Apple removing the home button and moving to a nearly full-front display. A new report claims, however, that Apple is also planning to remove the headphone jack, move the Smart Connector to the bottom near the Lightning port (which seems odd), and use a "diamond cut" edge on both front and back.

If you're looking for more confirmation of upcoming design changes, Apple itself has included a new iPad icon in the latest iOS 12 beta that appears to show a design with much smaller bezels, no home button, but no display notch. It's a low-resolution icon that doesn't provide significant detail, but the differences compared to the current version of the icon are obvious.

Apple Reports Record 3Q 2018 Results, Driving Market Cap to $1 Trillion
default.jpg Apple this week announced financial results for the third fiscal quarter of 2018, setting company records for revenue and profit for any June quarter. The strong performance and outlook drove Apple's share price up roughly 5 percent to over $200 the following day, and just a day later Apple became the first publicly traded U.S. company to reach a market capitalization of $1 trillion.

Alongside its earnings announcement, Apple revealed that Apple Pay will be coming soon to Germany, and will be accepted at CVS and 7-Eleven stores later this year. Tim Cook commented that "the smartphone market is very healthy" while noting he "feels great" about Apple's booming services segment and is "thrilled" about the company's pipeline, including new services.

Apple's Upcoming 6.5-Inch OLED 'iPhone X Plus' to Support iPad-Style Landscape Mode
default.jpgApple is widely expected to launch a 6.5-inch "iPhone X Plus" model this year, and some recent digging has discovered that many of Apple's native apps have already been optimized to run at the rumored iPhone X Plus resolution with a landscape mode similar to that seen on other Plus-sized devices. It's nice confirmation that the new model will support landscape views, as the iPhone X doesn't support them despite having a larger display than current Plus-sized models.

In other iPhone rumors, we've seen some new photos and video of dummy units representing the iPhone X Plus and Apple's upcoming 6.1-inch LCD model. These are obviously non-functional units for mockup purposes only, but they give a decent idea of the physical sizes of these future devices.

Apple Sold Fewest Macs in Any Quarter Since 2010 as Nearly Entire Lineup Was Outdated
default.jpgWhile Apple reported strong performance overall in the June quarter, one weak spot was the Mac, with the company selling only 3.72 million Macs during the quarter. That's the fewest in any quarter since 2010 and the first time Apple has sold fewer than four million Macs in a quarter since 2013.

Apple CFO Luca Maestri noted on the earnings conference call that Mac performance suffered from a "difficult launch comparison" as Apple updated much of its Mac lineup in June 2017, providing a boost to sales in the year-ago quarter. There was no similar update at WWDC 2018, with the entire Mac lineup with the exception of the iMac Pro being quite outdated for the entirety of the quarter.

Apple's Rumored MacBook Air Successor Said to Use Intel's Kaby Lake Refresh Processors
default.jpg Apple has been rumored for some time to be introducing a new low-cost notebook to replace the MacBook Air, but it's unclear whether it will be positioned as a new MacBook Air, a MacBook, or something else.

According to a new report, Intel's repeated delays in getting its Cannon Lake chips off the ground have hampered Apple's plans for the new notebook, and Apple has instead opted to go with Kaby Lake Refresh chips. The problem is that these chips are already almost a year old, so it'll be interesting to see if Apple does go with these chips or holds out for new interim Whiskey Lake chips from Intel as it tries to bridge the gap to Cannon Lake.
