Best Black Friday Deals, Apple Disbands AirPort Team, iPhone 6s Battery Repair Program - MacRumors

The day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. has long been known as Black Friday, the traditional kickoff to the holiday shopping season when retailers offer significant discounts to lure shoppers into their stores. Apple products are no exception, and a number of retailers will be offering great deals.  We've got a summary of the best deals, as well as retailer-specific discounts from both B&H Photo Video and MacMall, and the most complete list of deals is in our Black Friday roundup.

Notably, Apple itself will be participating in Black Friday sales this year after sitting out in 2015. While it's a rare opportunity to get discounts straight from Apple, the early launch of the promo in Australia and New Zealand reveals Apple's offer consists of bonus Apple Store gift cards rather than price cuts and isn't valid on the latest hardware like the MacBook Pro, iPhone 7, or Apple Watch Series 2.

Better deals can usually be had elsewhere, so make sure to check our roundup and stay tuned to MacRumors for all of the latest promotions as they're announced. Also keep an eye on carriers such as Verizon and T-Mobile that are trying to lure in iPhone 7 customers with trade-in deals, while a number of app developers are also offering discounts on their software.

Apple Ceases Development of 'AirPort' Wireless Routers as Engineers Reassigned to Other Products
Apple has reportedly disbanded its engineering team focused on AirPort wireless routers, reassigning the employees to other projects such as the Apple TV. The move suggests Apple is getting out of the wireless router business, to the disappointment of many fans who have appreciated the design and ease-of-use of Apple's AirPort and Time Capsule products. Apple's AirPort lineup hasn't seen any updates since 2013, but it's likely Apple will continue selling the current devices until they become outdated enough to warrant their discontinuation, at which point the company will likely begin featuring third-party options in its stores.

Apple Launches Repair Program for iPhone 6s Devices Experiencing Unexpected Shutdowns
After debuting a repair program last week to assist iPhone 6 Plus owners whose devices have experienced so-called "Touch Disease," Apple this week launched a separate program for iPhone 6s owners who have had problems with their devices unexpectedly shutting down due to a battery defect. The issue is limited to a small number of devices manufactured in September and October 2015, but if you're having trouble with random shutdowns, you might want to check with Apple to see if you're covered.

Phil Schiller Says 32GB RAM on New MacBook Pro Would Have Required Battery Compromising Design
The controversy over Apple's decision to use components and a design that limit the new MacBook Pro to 16 GB of RAM continues, and Phil Schiller has once again weighed in to highlight some of those issues. Schiller says that Apple opted to use "very fast" LPDDR3 RAM, which is limited to a maximum of 16 GB with Intel's Skylake processors, because higher amounts would have required using DDR4 RAM. That RAM would have had a double whammy effect on battery life, as the RAM itself is much less power efficient and it would have required a different logic board design that likely would have reduced space available for the battery.

Jony Ive Said to Be 'As Connected to Product Design as Ever' Following Speculation About His Role
Following Jony Ive's promotion to Chief Design Officer last year and a couple of recent developments including the release of Apple's $200 "Designed by Apple in California" photo book and Ive's work designing a festive holiday installation at a London hotel, there has been speculation that Ive may be scaling back his involvement in Apple's product design efforts.

That speculation gained significant momentum last week when Daring Fireball's John Gruber noted on his podcast that he'd heard secondhand Ive has indeed not been as involved in Apple's products and instead spending more time on the company's upcoming corporate campus and retail store designs. Gruber's comments "shook a few well-placed little birdies out of the tree," however, allowing him to follow up with a blog post reassuring fans that Ive is "as connected to product design as ever."

Donald Trump Tells Tim Cook He'll Offer Apple 'Very Large Tax Cut' to Make Products in America
Amid word that Apple recently asked Foxconn to look into the possibility of producing iPhones in the United States, President-elect Donald Trump revealed this week that he spoke with Tim Cook following the election earlier this month. Trump says he told Cook his goal was to have Apple build "many big plants" in the United States and that his administration will "create the incentives" to do it with a "very large tax cut" for corporations.

MacBook Pro Deliveries Begin, iPhone and iPad Rumors, Apple's $200 Photo Book - MacRumors

Apple began shipping the first batch of Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro orders late last week, with the first deliveries taking place on Monday. We've seen the usual unboxings and teardowns, as well as the early round of press reviews that shared mixed reactions to the machines in general and the Touch Bar in particular, finding it anywhere between "useful" and a "gimmick."

While shipping estimates for new online orders remain at 4–5 weeks, small quantities of stock configurations are now making their way into Apple's retail stores. For its part, Apple is featuring Mac App Store apps that have already been updated to support the Touch Bar, while a new ad positions the Touch Bar as a technological leap forward. If you're looking for an external display to go with your new MacBook Pro, make sure to check out our overview of compatible USB-C monitors.

Other MacBook Pro tidbits we've learned in the past week include the use of non-removable flash storage in the Touch Bar models, the reasons behind Apple's decision to use AMD's Polaris-based graphics chips, and an apparent bug that has resulted in a security feature known as System Integrity Protection being disabled on some of the new MacBook Pro units.

Apple Said to Release Curved, Bezel-Free 5-Inch and 5.8-Inch iPhones Next Year
Rumors about next year's iPhones are already picking up steam, and the most popular story this week about them came from analysts at Barclays, who claimed Apple is planning new 5-inch and 5.8-inch models with curved, bezel-free designs. Only the larger model would use an OLED display.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has a slightly different take on the situation, claiming that while Apple's OLED iPhone may use a 5.8-inch display, the  "actual active area" may be more like 5.1–5.2 inches. Kuo also believes Apple will release new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD-based iPhones that would be more similar to the current models. Finally, Kuo has reiterated his previous claim that the larger dual-camera models will include optical image stabilization on both cameras. The iPhone 7 Plus only includes the feature on its wide-angle lens.

Three New iPads Said to Launch in March, Including Bezel-Free 10.9-Inch Model
In addition to the iPhone, Barclays analysts have also released some of their predictions for the next-generation iPads, which the firm expects to debut in March. The analysts believe there will be a refreshed 12.9-inch iPad Pro and a new 9.7-inch iPad, but the headliner will be a 10.9-inch "bezel-free" iPad Pro model.

The new 10.9-inch model is said to be the roughly the same physical size as the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro, but the smaller bezels will allow for a larger display. Other sources have reported this new mid-sized iPad will have either a 10.1-inch or 10.5-inch display, so while exact figures conflict, it appears likely there will be at least some increase in screen size next year.

Phil Schiller Says Apple Tested and Rejected Touch Screen Macs, Finding It 'Absurd' on a Desktop
With the new Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro, there's been renewed discussion about the possibility of a full touchscreen Mac, but marketing chief Phil Schiller downplayed the idea in a recent interview in which he explained that Apple tested out the idea several times over the years but found it felt "absurd" trying to touch the display on a desktop computer. Redesigning macOS for finger input would degrade the regular mouse/trackpad experience, as "you can't optimize for both,"and trying to do so would be "lowest common denominator thinking."

MacBook Pros About to Ship, 'Jet White' iPhone 7?, Apple Slashes USB-C Accessory Prices - MacRumors

Anticipation is building as the first customers to place orders for the new MacBook Pro with Touch Bar are starting to see their order statuses move to "Preparing for Shipment." That means shipping is imminent, so customers will soon be able to track their orders as they make their way to their new owners.

Despite some complaints about pricing and a lack of ports, we're continuing to see signs of strong sales for the new MacBook Pro, with Apple reportedly telling its suppliers to expect high order volumes heading into 2017 while Slice Intelligence has found the new MacBook Pro has already outsold all competing notebooks this year as measured by revenue.

Price cuts on accessories range from about 20–50 percent and include both Apple and third-party products, with the LG displays seeing significant 25 percent drops. The discounted pricing is valid through December 31 as Apple seeks to assist early adopters in transitioning to the new standards.

Apple's iPhone sales received a boost following the launch of the iPhone SE, but Kuo predicts Apple will not use a similar strategy in 2017, instead putting pressure on its suppliers to reduce costs in an effort to boost profit margins on the iPhone 7 lineup.

Apple Says It's Out of the Standalone Display Business
Alongside the new MacBook Pro, Apple announced new 5K and 4K displays from LG specifically designed to work well with the new notebooks, but questions remained about whether Apple was still working on a rumored display of its own that could even include a graphics card to help lower-powered machines drive it. Apple appears to have put those rumors to rest, however, telling The Verge's Nilay Patel that the company is out of the standalone display business, so if you're interested in a high-resolution external display for your new MacBook Pro, the LG displays may be your best bet.

The new models could come with price drops as the new technology starts to become cheaper to produce, while new Intel chips could allow for an increase in maximum RAM beyond the current 16 GB limit.
