New 4-Inch 'iPhone 5se' Rumors, Record Earnings Numbers, iPhone 7 and iPad Air 3 - MacRumors

Rumors about a new 4-inch iPhone from Apple have continued to escalate, although some uncertainty remains about just what to expect. The latest rumors claim the device will be called the "iPhone 5se" and feature an A9 chip similar to that found in the current iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. The device would initially replace the iPhone 5s in Apple's lineup and then also take the place of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus later this year once the iPhone 7 launches.

The iPhone 5se is said to resemble the iPhone 5s in design with the exception of curved front glass edges similar to the iPhone 6 rather than the chamfered edges of the iPhone 5s. A claimed leaked photo of the device, however, makes it appear much more like a smaller iPhone 6.

The iPhone 5se is expected to debut at a March media event where Apple could also introduce the iPad Air 3 and some tweaks to its Apple Watch lineup with some new band options.

Apple Reports Record Results: $18.4B Profit on $75.9B in Revenue for Q1 2016 on 74.8M iPhones
Apple this week announced its financial results for the holiday quarter that ended in late December, reporting all-time company records for revenue, profit, and iPhone sales, as well as Apple Watch and Apple TV sales. The company also announced it now has over one billion active devices in use by customers.

Apple's future financial performance is a bit murky, however, with Tim Cook acknowledging the current quarter will see the first ever year-over-year decline in iPhone sales. The expected decline is due to a number of factors, including a strong U.S. dollar hampering international sales momentum and a slower rollout for the iPhone 6 during last year's product cycle that pushed some sales into later quarters.

Finally, on the earnings conference call, Cook was asked about the company's interest in virtual reality, and Cook responded by calling the technology "really cool" with "some interesting applications." Apple has tipped its potential interest in virtual reality through some recent corporate acquisitions and new employee hires, but its exact plans remain unknown.

iPhone 7 Plus Likely to Have Dual-Lens Camera Based on LinX Technology
A redesigned iPhone 7 is expected to launch around the usual September timeframe, and a new rumor claims the larger iPhone 7 Plus model may include a dual-lens rear camera based on technology from Apple's acquisition of LinX Imaging last year.

A dual-lens camera could bring improvements in a number of areas, including noise reduction, low-light performance, 3-D depth mapping, and more.

iPad Air 3 Could Feature Four Speakers and Rear-Facing LED Flash
The iPad Air 3 has been expected for some time to launch in the first half of this year, but details on what to expect in the new device have been scarce so far. A new design drawing likely from a case manufacturer, however, sheds a bit of light on possibilities including a four-speaker design similar to the iPad Pro and a new LED flash for the rear camera.

A much sketchier rumor says the iPad Air 3 will include a 4K display and up to 4 GB of RAM. The benefits of a move to a 4K display are difficult to see, however, particularly considering the likely hit to battery life it would incur.

The iPad Air 3 is expected to debut at a rumored March media event.

Intel Launches New Skylake Chips Appropriate for 15-Inch Retina MacBook Pro
Intel this week quietly updated its processor price lists, adding in several new Skylake chips that could be appropriate for an updated 15-inch MacBook Pro. According to one new rumor, Apple's Skylake Mac notebook updates will be staggered through 2016, led by Retina MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro updates in the March–April timeframe and followed by the 15-inch MacBook Pro closer to mid-year.

iOS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.11.3, iPhone 6s Battery Display Issue, WWDC Dates - MacRumors

Apple this week released iOS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.11.3 to the public, both of which have been in developer and public beta testing since before the holidays. Neither one brings any major new features, although there are some important bug fixes and security improvements included, so users should be sure to update their devices.

Much more substantial updates in the form of iOS 9.3 and OS X 10.11.4, as well as watchOS 2.2 and tvOS 9.2, remain in beta since their debut for developers and public beta testers last week, with official launches planned for the "spring" timeframe.

Apple Studying Issue With iPhone 6s & 6s Plus Not Updating Battery Percentage
Apple last week posted a new support document acknowledging it is investigating an issue with iPhone 6s and 6s Plus devices failing to update the battery life displayed in the status bar.

No exact diagnosis or solution has been determined, but it appears to be related to time zone issues, as Apple recommends users experiencing the problem restart their devices and ensure the time is being set automatically from Apple's servers. Many of those experiencing the problem since the launch of the new phones last September have been manually adjusting their system times, frequently in attempting to bypass timer-based barriers in certain games.

In other iPhone 6s news, be sure to check out our new feature video highlighting several lesser-known uses for 3D Touch on the latest iPhones, including some cool Peek and Pop functions, pressure-sensitive drawing tools, and a way to turn your onscreen keyboard into a trackpad to make it easy to move your text cursor to just the right spot.

Apple's 2016 Worldwide Developers Conference Will Likely Take Place June 13 to 17
Apple likely won't make an official announcement about this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) for a few more months, but it's looking like it's going to be held the week of June 13–17 in San Francisco. That guess is based on the public schedule for the Moscone West convention center where the conference has been held for a number of years, with most of the rest of the month of June being booked up for other events.

WWDC will undoubtedly see the unveiling of iOS 10 and OS X 10.12, and perhaps some hardware announcements and other news.

Those hoping to attend WWDC might want to start thinking about travel plans if they're looking for the best prices, but with Apple using a lottery system for distributing tickets in recent years, there are no guarantees of getting a seat.

Apple Launches 'Music Memos' App, Releases Major 'GarageBand for iOS' Update
Apple this week surprised everyone with a nice set of upgrades for those interested in Apple's audio and music-making apps. Complementing the new Music Memos app is a major upgrade to GarageBand for iOS with new Live Loops and Drummer features. Apple also released updates to its Logic Pro software for Mac and Logic Remote app for iOS.

Major Apple Watch 2 Upgrade Not Likely to See March Debut

Amid rumors of a March Apple event to show off an updated Apple Watch, TechCrunch last week claimed a debut for "Apple Watch 2.0" is unlikely to take place so soon. The report was later updated to note it's possible there could be a minor update to add a FaceTime camera to the Apple Watch at this event, but a full upgrade of the casing and internals is still a ways off.

In other Apple Watch news, Apple is preparing to begin online sales of its Apple Watch Hermès collection this Friday. Introduced at last September's media event and staring at $1099, the special Apple Watch collection has until now only been available in a select few Apple and Hermès retail stores.

Likely False 13-Inch Skylake MacBook Pro Showing Up in Benchmarks
Finally, as evidence of the pent-up demand for updates to Apple's Mac notebook lineup, one of our most popular stories last week was about likely fake benchmark results from what was apparently purported to be a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro running on an unreleased Skylake processor from Intel. Unfortunately, there are several aspects of these results that don't add up, suggesting they have indeed been faked.

That means we're still waiting for signs of new notebooks, which could start appearing relatively shortly considering Skylake chips have been announced for release early in 2016.

Apple this week surprised everyone with a full set of new beta releases, led by iOS 9.3. Due for public release in the spring, iOS 9.3 is a significant mid-cycle update for Apple's mobile operating system that introduces a number of new features including a new Night Shift mode to reduce the sleep-disrupting blue tint of bright displays late in the day (be sure to check out our how-to!), new Quick Actions on some of Apple's home screen app icons, and improvements to News, Notes, CarPlay, Health, and more. The update also brings a host of improvements for the education market, making it easier for students to share iPads and for teachers and admins to manage those devices.

Be sure to check out our video walkthroughs of iOS 9.3 and the new tvOS 9.2 beta for all of the latest details. A watchOS 2.2 update has also been provided to developers, but changes there appear to be fairly minor so far.

Apple Seeds First OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan Beta With Live Photos Support in Messages
While iOS 9.3 was the star of this week's beta releases, Apple also pushed out an OS X 10.11.4 beta that's a bit lower profile. It includes support for a couple of parallel features to iOS 9.3 like password-protected Notes, and perhaps most notably support for viewing Live Photos received via the Messages app.

iOS 9.2.1 and OS X 10.11.3 remain in testing as well, and those should be seeing public releases in the coming weeks as Apple continues to refine the much more significant iOS 9.3 and OS X 10.11.4 releases for a spring launch.

Elon Musk Says Apple's Electric Car Project is an 'Open Secret'
Tesla CEO Elon Musk this week stated in an interview with the BBC that Apple's electric car project is an "open secret" among those in the industry. Musk notes it's "pretty hard to hide" a project of that scale considering the number of people Apple is hiring for it.

Just last week, we discovered Apple has registered several car-related domain names, including apple.car, apple.cars, and apple.auto. While Apple could be registering those domains for CarPlay-related reasons or simply to protect itself from those looking to grab the names for themselves, the move certainly set off a fresh round of speculation.

iPhone 7 May Ship With Lightning-Connected EarPods, New Wireless Earphones Also Under Development
Rumors about the iPhone 7 continue to escalate, with a new report indicating the device will indeed lack a standard headphone jack and instead ship with Lightning-equipped EarPods. New 4-Inch 'iPhone 5e' Could Feature A8 Chip, 1GB of RAM, Apple Pay and VoLTE Calling
Rumors of a new 4-inch iPhone have been circulating for some time, and while recently they appear to have been consolidating around an "iPhone 6c" device that would approximate the specs of an iPhone 6s but with a smaller display, a new rumor calls the device an "iPhone 5e" and suggests it will be much more like an upgraded iPhone 5s. According to the report, it will include an A8 chip with 1 GB RAM and support for features like Apple Pay and Voice over LTE. Another report claims the device's body will be similar enough to the iPhone 5s that many accessories will work on both devices.

Apple Prevented Volkswagen From Exhibiting Wireless CarPlay at CES
Wireless CarPlay was supposed to be a feature introduced as part of iOS 9, but we've yet to see any actual support for the feature from any car manufacturers. According to a Volkswagen representative, the carmaker hoped to show off the feature at CES last week, but Apple requested that Volkswagen refrain, with Apple likely seeking to control a more complete demo and release at some point.

In other CarPlay news besides the slew of new announcements from auto manufacturers and aftermarket audio equipment companies at CES, the feature was named "Technology of the Year" by Autoblog. Apple has also released an updated list of CarPlay-compatible car models, now numbering over 100 from the 2016 and 2017 model years.

iPhone 7 Plus Said to Have 256GB Option and Larger 3,100 mAh Battery
Rumors about the iPhone 7 have continued to ramp up, and the one gaining the most attention over the past couple of weeks is a claim that the larger iPhone 7 Plus will include a 256 GB storage option and a 3,100 mAh battery that's larger than the one found in previous "Plus" models.

Other recent iPhone 7 rumors include our first part leak that arrived in the form of a display backlight assembly with some changes to the locations of the cables and the 3D touch chip, continued claims of no headphone jack included on the device, and word that the iPhone 7 may be waterproof and made of a new composite material to hide the antenna bands that have been prominent on recent designs.

60 Minutes Airs 'Inside Apple' Special Providing Close Look at Company
Leading into the Christmas week, weekly news magazine show 60 Minutes featured an inside look at Apple, with Charlie Rose interviewing Tim Cook and other executives to reveal some interesting tidbits of information. Among the key items were interviews with Jony Ive inside Apple's top-secret design studio and with Angela Ahrendts inside a mockup of Apple's latest retail store design. Cook also spoke forcefully about privacy and encryption, labor and human rights, and accusations of tax avoidance by Apple, which he referred to as "total political crap."

In one brief shot from a segment filmed in Apple's board room, some viewers thought they spotted an unreleased larger Retina MacBook or a slimmed-down Retina MacBook Pro sitting on a table, but Apple later confirmed the machine was merely the existing 12-inch MacBook.

AT&T to Stop Offering Two-Year Phone Contracts Starting January 8
After cutting off Apple and other resellers from offering two-year phone contracts last year, AT&T is now doing away almost all such contracts even at its own stores, forcing customers toward purchasing their phones either at full price or on an AT&T Next installment plan. The move is part of a larger trend in the industry toward decoupling device costs from service costs, but it has generated significant controversy from customers long used to subsidized upfront device pricing with the balance baked into their monthly service bills.

Class Action Lawsuit Accuses Apple of Crippling iPhone 4s With iOS 9 Update
Lawsuits frequently make for boring news stories, but a recent class action suit against Apple has generated quite a buzz by accusing Apple of crippling the iPhone 4s with the launch of iOS 9. According to the lawsuit, Apple advertised iOS 9 as bringing "faster performance" and other improvements but many users of older hardware like the iPhone 4s found their devices "slow and buggy" after the update with the only recourse being to spend hundreds of dollars on a new phone.
