iOS 8 Now Available, iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Arriving Friday, Rumored iPad Event October 21 - MacRumors

After three months of developer testing, iOS 8 is now available to the public. The new operating system builds on the major redesign that arrived last year with iOS 7, and includes a number of new features such as enhancements to Photos and Messages, a new QuickType predictive keyboard, support for systemwide third-party keyboards, a new Health app for tracking health and fitness data, and Continuity features allow for a more seamless experience moving among iOS devices and Macs.

Available for the iPhone 4s or later, iPad 2 or later, 5th-generation iPod touch, and iPad mini, iOS 8 can be installed right from the device by navigating to General -> Software Update in the Settings app.

Apple Said to Plan October 21 Media Event to Launch New iPads, OS X Yosemite
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus haven't even been released yet, but rumors about Apple's next event are already swirling. According to a new report, Apple is planning a media event for October 21, where the company will introduce new iPads and make its final remarks on OS X Yosemite before releasing the new operating system to the public immediately following the event. Lots of other Mac hardware is also in need of updates, but it's not clear if any will be arriving at the event.

Apple's Ultra-Slim 12-Inch Notebook Coming in Mid-2015 With Silver, Gold, and Space Gray Options?
It seems outlandish, but MacRumors believes there is validity to a rumor claiming Apple has been planning to launch its rumored ultra-slim 12" notebook in a variety of colors, adding "special edition" gold and space gray options to the standard silver aluminum. A launch for the new notebook has been a bit of a moving target, presumably due at least in part to Intel's delays with its next-generation Broadwell processors, but the latest rumors point to a mid-2015 target timeframe.

Report Claims Apple Launching New 27-Inch 5K Display Later This Year
Apple has been rumored for some time to be working on an ultra-high resolution standalone display, and a new report claims Apple is looking to introduce one before the end of the year. The new "5K" display reportedly carries a resolution of 5120 x 2880, or the Retina equivalent of the the current Apple Thunderbolt Display. Hopes for a Retina 27-inch display (and perhaps an iMac) received another boost with the finalization of the DisplayPort 1.3 spec, which will support uncompressed video output at the rumored 5K resolution over a single cable.
