Bending Complaints After iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Launch, iOS 8.0.1 Issues, Apple Folding Beats Music Into iTunes? - MacRumors

Following last Friday's successful launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, it seems like the only thing people are talking about over the past day or two is the phenomenon observed by a few users of their iPhones becoming bent or warped after being carried in a pocket. Despite only a few reports of bending, it's taken the Apple news scene and even mainstream media by storm. In the wake of these reports, a video of intentional bending shows that it can indeed be done with bare hands, but just how widespread the issue is remains to be seen. We've seen a couple of reports of iPhone 6 units with bending damage, but that device appears much more resistant to bending stresses than the larger iPhone 6 Plus.

On the cautionary side, we saw some users reporting battery drain and Wi-Fi issues with iOS 8, while iPhone 4s owners may want to think carefully about upgrading at all considering some of the performance hits the new operating system brings on the older device.

'Industry Scuttlebutt' Hints Apple May Be Planning February Revamp for Beats Music
Earlier this week, a report circulated claiming that Apple was on the verge of making major changes to its recently acquired Beats Music streaming service, claiming that engineers were being moved off the project as Apple looked to shut down the service. Apple press representatives quickly shot down claims of an impending shutdown, although it appears the company is planning a revamp for the service, possibly alongside the Grammy Awards ceremony next February. What exactly the revamp would entail is unclear, but it is possible the Beats Music brand itself will be retired and the service integrated into iTunes.

An earlier rumor of an October 21 media event to show off the new iPads was quickly shot down, but rumors continue to point to a "mid-October" unveiling.

A launch for the new notebook has been a bit of a moving target, presumably due at least in part to Intel's delays with its next-generation Broadwell processors, but the latest rumors point to a mid-2015 target timeframe.

Apple Announces 4.7-Inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-Inch iPhone 6 Plus, Launching September 19
While a sapphire display was nowhere to be found, most of the other iPhone 6 leaks turned out to be correct as Apple unveiled two new iPhone models with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays. Pre-orders in the first wave of countries begin September 12 with availability following on September 19.

Early hands-on reports from the event describe the new iPhones as feeling very slim and light with excellent displays, although the 6 Plus in particular feels very large. Apple expects the larger displays to be popular with customers, with Tim Cook predicting them to trigger "the mother of all upgrades".

Interestingly enough, several leaks over the weekend showing purported iPhone 6 units as well as benchmarks and test photos did in fact turn out to be genuine. Their authenticity had been heavily debated in the lead-up to the event.

Among various tidbits revealed in follow-ups are details on water-resistance, making calls through the Watch, and left-handed support.

Apple Announces 'Apple Pay' Mobile Payment Solution, Enabled at Over 220,000 U.S. Merchants
Sandwiched between the iPhone 6 and Apple Watch announcements at yesterday's event was Apple's move into mobile payments known as Apple Pay. Arriving as an iOS 8 update next month, it will leverage Touch ID and NFC support in the iPhone 6 to allow users to make financial transactions by simply holding their phones up to a payment terminal and touching the home button. Apple is bringing on a host of partners for Apple Pay, including credit card companies, card-issuing banks, and retailers. Apple's bank partners, which will reportedly pay Apple a fee on each transaction, represent over 80 percent of the credit card purchasing volume in the U.S., and its retail partners will include over 220,000 compatible points of sale at launch. Apple Removes iPod Classic from Online Store
Exactly five years after its last update, the venerable iPod classic that served as the descendant of the original iPod introduced in 2001 has finally been discontinued. The hard drive-based device stuck around for many years due its large 160 GB capacity, but with the iPhone 6 gaining a 128 GB option it seems Apple feels the time is right to retire the device. Earlier this year, Apple removed mention of the iPod classic from its online store for refurbished products, but even at that point it had been some time since any had been in stock for purchase.

It's now official: Apple late last week sent out invitations for a media event scheduled for September 9 at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino. The company is reportedly planning to show off the iPhone 6, a wearable device frequently referred to as the iWatch, and perhaps a mobile payments initiative at the event. The company has spent the past several weeks building a massive temporary structure enclosing a sunken garden adjacent to the Flint Center, although the purpose of the structure is unknown.

iPhone 6 Built From Parts Apparently Shown Booting to 'Connect to iTunes' Screen
Luxury modified iPhone maker Feld & Volk has been acquiring iPhone 6 parts over the last several months, and with a full logic board in hand has now built its own 4.7-inch iPhone 6 from those parts. A video posted by the company shows the device apparently booting into recovery mode.

Feld & Volk's parts have also produced a bounty of other tidbits about the internals of the iPhone 6, including confirmation of near field communications (NFC) capabilities, a 16 GB storage option at the low end, 1 GB of RAM paired with the new A8 chip, and an improved LTE modem. The booting device also appears to support previous speculation by John Gruber about the 4.7-inch model carrying a resolution of 1334 x 750 pixels.

In other leaks, we've seen new high-quality photos of the rear shell and other parts from the 4.7-inch model, as well as a video of the rear shell and a photo of the battery from the 5.5-inch model.

Apple to Unveil Wearable Device on September 9 Alongside iPhone 6
In an apparent change of course, Apple has reportedly decided to unveil its much-rumored wearable device, commonly called the iWatch, alongside the iPhone 6 at the company's September 9 media event. The move has been speculated to help position the iWatch as an iPhone accessory rather than a standalone device. But while an unveiling may come sooner than originally thought, the iWatch will reportedly not begin shipping until possibly early next year.

An early 2015 launch for the iWatch has been hinted by several supply chain rumors, including a fresh one claiming the device is still in the "engineering verification" stage of development. Apple may or may not be ready to talk pricing at next week's event, but the company is said to be weighing options in the $400 range, although cheaper models would be likely.
