iPhone 6 Event on September 9, New iOS 8 & Yosemite Betas, 'Mid 2014' Mac Mini/iMac Listings - MacRumors

The five-week countdown is on, as it looks like Apple will be holding its annual iPhone media event on September 9. While Apple hasn't officially confirmed the date yet, the news comes from Re/code, which has a perfect track record with such reports, and is being corroborated by The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. If past history is any indication, the iPhone 6 should become available in the first wave of countries around September 19, with iOS 8 launching to the public for existing devices a few days earlier.

Fifth Betas of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite Released to Developers
Apple this week released the fifth beta versions of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite to developers for testing as the company continues to make progress toward a public release. Both operating systems continue to see visual and functional tweaks, with iOS 8 seeing new SMS Relay functionality, some icon tweaks, and a new switch to turn predictive text on and off right from the keyboard, while Yosemite has seen some visual tweaks and the addition of an option to always show full URLs in Safari.

Unreleased 'Mid 2014' Mac Mini and 27-inch iMac Models Spotted on Apple Support Page
Apple last week updated a support document outlining Boot Camp support for a variety of Mac models, and in the process added mentions for "Mid 2014" models of the Mac mini and 27-inch iMac that have not been released. While the additions, which were quickly removed, may have been an error, they did spark quite a bit of interest from those awaiting updates to Apple's desktop lineups. The Mac mini hasn't been updated since 2012, and while Apple did release a new low-cost 21.5-inch "Mid 2014" iMac in June, the remainder of the lineup was untouched.

New Photos Show Purported Rear Shell of iPad Air 2
iPhone 6 parts have been leaking in significant quantities in recent months, but we've yet to see much from the next iPads, which are rumored to be seeing updates around the October timeframe. While the next iPad Air is likely to look very similar to the current model, new photos showing what is claimed to be a genuine rear shell from the device reveal a tweaked speaker grille design with only a single row of holes.

Apple Welcomes Beats to the Family as Beats Electronics Closes Its Online Store
Just over two months after it was officially announced, Apple has now closed its deal to acquire streaming music service Beats Music and headphone company Beats Electronics. The Beats brand is now officially operating under Apple and Beats Electronics has shuttered its online store and begun directing customers to the Apple online store to purchase Beats products. Apple is said to be trimming up to 200 employee positions at Beats over the next several months as part of the transition, streamlining operations in areas of overlap such as human resources and finance.
