With smaller display bezels, the new MacBook Air also comes in significantly smaller than its predecessor. The new MacBook Air boasts impressive battery life, due in part to its use of a 7-watt MacBook-class Intel chip that draws significantly less power than the 15-watt chips used in prior models. Despite the lower power, chip advances still mean the MacBook Air offers significant performance improvements.   Read Full Article Apple Announces New Space Gray Mac mini With 4-Core or 6-Core Intel Processor and Up to 64GB RAM, Starting at $799 Apple's long-neglected Mac mini also received an update, with a new Space Gray finish and significantly improved specs including four Thunderbolt 3 ports. The Mac mini now starts with a quad-core processor, but 6-core options are also available. It also supports up to 64 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of fast SSD storage. There's also an option to upgrade to 10 Gb Ethernet. The upgrades don't come cheap, with even the entry-level model checking in at $799. We also pitted the iPhone XR and iPhone XS cameras against each other to see how the single-lens camera from the XR stacks up against its more advanced sibling. Drop tests also revealed that the iPhone XR rates just about as breakable as the iPhone XS, as both devices have all-glass front and back panels.   Read Full Article Apple Releases iOS 12.1 With eSIM Support, Real-Time Depth Control, Group FaceTime, New Emoji and More Following Tuesday's event, Apple released iOS 12.1 to the public, bringing support for dual SIMs, real-time depth control in Portrait mode, Group FaceTime for up to 32 people, and dozens of new emoji. The update also addresses several issues including user complaints of over-aggressive skin-smoothing in selfies and poor cellular performance in Apple's latest iPhones. Alongside iOS 12.1, Apple also released macOS 10.14.1, tvOS 12.1, and watchOS 5.1 with corresponding feature updates and bug fixes, although Apple was forced to quickly pull the watchOS 5.1 after numerous users reported the update process was bricking their watches. Visit Sponsor Popular Stories Oct 25, 2018 New iPad Mini Coming as Soon as Next Week's Event, AirPower in Late 2018/Early 2019 Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week dropped a bit of a bombshell, claiming Apple is working on a new iPad mini that could debut as soon as next week's event. Many have assumed the iPad mini will be discontinued as phones have gotten larger and Apple hasn't updated its smallest tablet in over three years, but it looks like that may not be the case! Beyond the iPad mini, Kuo says we can expect updated iPad Pro and Mac models at next week's event, and the much-anticipated AirPower charging mat could finally launch either by the end of this year or early next year. There have been a number of different iPod form factors over the years, but we're down to only the iPod touch at this point as dedicated music players have been supplanted by multifunction smartphones like the iPhone. Still, the original iPod was an iconic product that marked one of the biggest steps of Apple's rebirth following the return of the Steve Jobs, but if you take a look back at our forum thread about the announcement, you'll find not everyone saw the iPod at the time as the groundbreaking product it would become.   Read Full Article Apple Debuts New USB-C Magnetic Apple Watch Charger Alongside the iPhone XR, Apple last week also quietly introduced a new Apple Watch charging cable with a USB-C connector rather than the traditional USB-A plug. The new USB-C version is only available in the shortest 0.5-meter length, and it's priced at $29. While Apple has frequently been slow to expand features and services to new countries, a new report indicates Apple's TV service could see a rapid expansion to over 100 countries before the end of 2019. The quick ramp-up would let Apple better compete with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, both of which have nearly global availability. One big potential advantage for Apple is a rumor that the company's original content could be made available free of charge to Apple device owners.    Read Full Article Italy Fining Apple 10M Euros for 'Dishonest Commercial Practices' Related to iPhone Throttling It's been almost a year since the controversy over Apple throttling performance on iPhones with degraded batteries blew up, with Apple explaining that it did so in order to prevent unexpected shutdowns that would be worse for the user experience than performance impacts noticeable only when under heavy load. While Apple stepped up to offer heavily discounted iPhone battery replacements through the end of this year to allow those with degraded batteries to get back up to full speed, that didn't stop a number of governments around the world from looking into the issue. Italy's antitrust authority has finally completed its investigation and fined Apple 10 million euros (about $11.5 million) over the situation, citing "dishonest commercial practices" intended to drive product replacement upgrades, even though Apple argues the intention was to prolong device lifespans. Samsung was also fined 5 million euros for encouraging owners of its older Note 4 devices to upgrade to a newer version of Android that severely impacted performance.   Read Full Article

According to claimed leaked design specs and a source who provided accurate information on the new iPhones just ahead of their debut, the upcoming iPad Pro will measure just 5.9 mm thick. It's not clear whether this refers to one or both sizes of the tablet, but the current 10.5-inch model measures in at 6.1 mm while the 12.9-inch model is 6.9 mm thick. In other news, the new iPad Pro models have been spotted in app analytics, but curiously they appear to be showing the same resolutions as the current models. Photoshop CC for iPad will include a revamped interface tailored specifically for the tablet, but will still look similar to the desktop version and uses the same code base, so users will be able to transition seamlessly between platforms. iOS 12.0.1 Released, New Apple Pencil, Mac Sales Plummet, Nike+ Apple Watch - MacRumors

The filings cover several new tablet models and an unspecified "Bluetooth device" that could be the updated Apple Pencil.   Read Full Article Apple's Mac Sales Down in Q3 2018 Amid a Lack of Update We're really hoping to see some new Macs alongside the updated iPad Pro models, but in the meantime, Mac sales are plummeting, with research firms Gartner (8.5%) and IDC (11.6%) estimating major drops in worldwide Mac shipments for the July–September quarter when compared to the same period in 2017. The MacBook Pro was updated in July, but other than that and the iMac Pro, every other Mac model is well over a year old. We've been hearing rumors about iMac and MacBook updates, as well as an all-new Mac mini and a new low-cost notebook that could appear as either a new MacBook Air or part of the MacBook family. So if Apple is indeed planning a media event for later this month, it seems it'll have a lot to show off.   Read Full Article Hands-On With the New Nike+ Apple Watch Series 4 While the new Apple Watch Series 4 models launched several weeks ago, the Nike+ versions didn't debut until last Friday, and we went hands-on with one of the new run-oriented models. The Nike+ Series 4 models are available in either silver or space gray aluminum and with special band options including Sport Loop bands with a bit of reflective thread in them to help with nighttime visibility. From faces and people to body parts, clothing, toys, sports, and more, there's something new for just about everybody. Apple is also taking the opportunity to tweak its mobile phone emoji design so that it looks like an iPhone X-style device with no Home button. The upcoming operating system versions are currently in beta testing and could see a public release around the end of the month if past history and rumors of upcoming hardware updates are any indication.   Read Full Article Apple Denies Report Claiming Chinese Spies Planted Microchips in iCloud Servers There's a pretty crazy dispute going on right now over a Bloomberg Businessweek report claiming that the Chinese military worked to tamper with motherboards being manufactured by Supermicro and which ended up in servers purchased by nearly 30 companies including Apple and Amazon. Bloomberg is standing by its story even as Apple and Amazon have strenuously denied they ever discovered any such chips in their servers. Besides the companies, government officials in several countries have similarly stated they have no evidence of any such plot. The denials from Apple and others are so strong that it's difficult to believe they're being misleading, but Bloomberg hasn't backed down from its claims.   Read Full Article
