Apple Announces 5.8-inch 'iPhone X' With Super Retina OLED Edge-to-Edge Display
The highlight of today's media event was a "One more thing..." unveiling of the iPhone X, a completely redesigned iPhone featuring a 5.8-inch OLED display that covers nearly the entire front of the device. Advanced sensors enable facial tracking and recognition, including support for new "Animoji" that let you map your face onto various characters.

Early impressions cite the "striking" display and "sensational-looking" design, but it's expensive at $999 for 64 GB or $1149 for 256 GB. You'll also have to wait a bit to get your hands on the iPhone X, with pre-orders starting on October 27 ahead of a November 3 launch.

Most importantly for some, LTE connectivity is offered on some models, allowing users to make phone calls, stream Apple Music, and more without needing a paired iPhone within range, although you'll likely have to pay extra to your wireless provider for the privilege.

The Apple Watch Series 3 starts at $329, with LTE models starting at $399. Pre-orders begin September 15, with a launch on September 22.

iPhone 8 Rumors, Federighi in Charge of Siri, Steve Jobs Theater, New Beats Headphones - MacRumors

Following Apple's media event next Tuesday, September 12, we're likely to see a typical pattern when it comes to availability of the new iPhone with pre-orders likely coming that Friday, September 15 and an official launch date one week later on September 22. That's similar to most past releases, and in line with what some carriers are reporting for their timelines.

As we've been hearing for months, supplies of the OLED "iPhone 8" are expected to be extremely tight at launch. It's a refrain we hear ahead of every iPhone launch, but the warnings are especially dire this year amid rumors that Apple was slower than usual in ramping up mass production due to failed efforts at incorporating Touch ID under the display, OLED display quality control problems, and technical challenges with new 3D sensors.

On the rumor front, we've heard that users may be able to activate Siri on the iPhone 8 by holding down the elongated power button, while we've seen new photos of alleged iPhone 8 SIM card trays in silver and a copper-like gold color.

For all of the latest news and rumors as we head down the homestretch, make sure to check out our iPhone 8 roundup, which has everything you need to know about the all-new device.

Apple Acknowledges Siri Leadership Has Officially Moved From Eddy Cue to Craig Federighi
Apple late last week quietly revealed that responsibility for Siri has been moved from services chief Eddy Cue to head of software engineering Craig Federighi. Cue had overseen Siri for a number of years as part of his diverse role covering areas such as iTunes, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Pay, and Maps, but with Siri gaining further integration as a core feature of Apple's operating systems, it seems appropriate to move it under Federighi's watch.

While the change was only just made official, it's clear Federighi has played a key role with Siri for quite some time, handling on-stage demonstrations of it at recent media events and appearing alongside Cue in news features covering it.

New Apple Park Drone Video Shows Off Steve Jobs Theater Ahead of Next Week's Event
We're less than a week away from the big event, but aside from the new products being introduced, there's one other star of the show: the Steve Jobs Theater on the new Apple Park campus. Drone pilot Duncan Sinfield has shared some last-minute footage of the campus including a glimpse of the theater, revealing a beehive of activity inside the lobby of the building and people sitting on benches outside. Workers are likely still putting the finishing touches on the theater even as executives are preparing and rehearsing their presentations for next week's event.

Bloomberg also shared a few tidbits about the new theater, including word that the building's two main elevators rotate as they descend and ascend, and that the product demonstration area is hidden by a large moveable wall that will swing open after the event to reveal the hands-on area.

Boston Red Sox Used Apple Watch to Illicitly Steal Hand Signals From Opposing Teams
The Apple Watch made headlines this week after it was revealed that the Boston Red Sox have been using the device to steal hand signals from opposing teams, including the rival New York Yankees. In video clips provided to baseball investigators, a team trainer was seen multiple times glancing at his Apple Watch to receive information from others viewing footage in the video replay booth before passing the signals on to his own players. Any potential penalties for stealing signs have yet to be determined.

Apple Seeds Tenth Beta of iOS 11 to Developers and Public Beta Testers
We're truly in uncharted territory now, as Apple this week seeded the tenth developer beta of iOS 11, along with a corresponding ninth public beta version. It's the first time an iOS release has reached double digits in developer betas. Besides iOS 11, Apple also released a tenth developer beta version of tvOS, while late last week saw the ninth developer beta of macOS High Sierra.

We're just five days away from Apple's media event, and golden master versions of iOS 11 and other operating systems will likely be released immediately following the event, ahead of public releases roughly a week later.

September 12th iPhone 8 Event Announced, Apple TV Rumors, MacBook Pro Touch Bar Controversy  - MacRumors

Rumors have been building for weeks, but it's now official: Apple's iPhone 8 media event will be held on Tuesday, September 12, and it'll be at the new Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park headquarters campus that remains under construction. In addition to the iPhone 8, we're also expecting to see new "iPhone 7s" models, an updated Apple Watch with optional LTE connectivity, and a new Apple TV with support for 4K HDR content. The event kicks off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time, and we'll have full coverage.

iOS 11 Dock and Gesture Controls to Replace 'iPhone 8' Home Button Entirely
We've known for some time that the iPhone 8 will do away with the traditional Home button, but a new report from Bloomberg describes how it may not even include a virtual one, replacing the familiar functionality with a new iPad-style Dock and gestures. We also learned a bit more about how the status bar will wrap around the camera and sensor notch at the top of the phone. Some designers have already mocked up what such a layout might look like.

In other iPhone 8, rumors The New York Times supports long-standing rumors that it will be expensive, with the cheapest model likely starting around $999. Rumored wireless induction charging for all three new iPhones expected next month will reportedly be limited to 7.5 watts, half of the current Qi standard.

Finally, after Samsung's unveiling of its new Note 8 last week, we went hands-on with the new Android smartphone and compared it to an iPhone 8 dummy model. The video has been blowing up on YouTube, so be sure to check it out if you haven't already.

Apple to Debut Apple TV With 4K HDR Support at September Event
Last week, Bloomberg confirmed that Apple will indeed release an updated Apple TV at its September media event, with the key upgrades being support for 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) content.

In order to take advantage of the upgraded capabilities for the Apple TV, users will need access to content, and Apple has been working with content providers to upgrade the quality of their video. Unfortunately, negotiations are proving difficult as Apple wants to sell 4K new releases through iTunes at the same price point of around $20 it uses for HD movies. Film studios are, however, reportedly seeking a higher price point of $25–$30.

And in one bit of bad news, it sounds like the Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV that Apple announced at WWDC in June may not be ready for next month's event. The event seemed like a logical time to launch the app considering the updated box being released, but Apple hasn't given a more concrete timeframe than "later this year."

Former Apple Employee Thinks Touch Bar Shouldn't Be Forced on Users Who Want Highest-End MacBook Pro
Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro has generated significant controversy since its launch last fall over a number of features, including the Touch Bar that brings shortcuts, Touch ID, and more right to the keyboard. Former Apple employee Chuq Von Rospach created a bit of a stir this week with his argument that the Touch Bar is of questionable utility and even users who want high-end MacBook Pro models should be able to get them without the feature. Von Rospach argues that Apple needs to either go all-in on the Touch Bar and roll it out to all machines including desktops or else "roll it back" and offer high-end MacBook Pro configurations without it.

Apple Seeds Ninth Beta of iOS 11 to Developers
Yes, that's right: Apple has just seeded its ninth developer beta and eighth public beta version of iOS 11 for testing, just days after the previous version. The same is true for tvOS 11, while macOS High Sierra and watchOS 4 saw only one beta release each this week.

With under two weeks to go until the iPhone 8 launch and a Labor Day holiday within that time, it's clear Apple is putting the very finishing touches on its next operating system versions, squashing any last bugs it can as it prepares to lock things down for the final release and push any further fixes off to future updates.

Apple May Launch Galaxy Note 8-Sized iPhone With 6.4-Inch OLED Display Next Year
We're so close to the debut of the iPhone 8, but rumors about next year's model (iPhone 9?) are already starting to gain steam, with a new report claiming Apple is planning a model with a 6.4-inch display that would be similar in size to Samsung's new Note 8. Consider it a "Plus" version of the new iPhone 8 form factor.

This is the second time we've heard rumors of a ~6.4-inch model for next year, but there's still a long way to go, so we'll have to hear a bit more before we start gaining confidence in the rumors.

iPhone 8 Details and Event Rumors, iOS 11 Tidbits, New Intel Chips, Samsung's Note 8 - MacRumors

logo.png
feature.jpg
With September quickly approaching, we should soon be hearing about a date for Apple's iPhone media event, and a new rumor claims Apple is targeting Tuesday, September 12 for the event with a launch for the new iPhones following on September 22. The dates make sense, but it's hard to say whether they're based on actual information or simply reasonable guesses at this point.

Other iPhone 8 rumors this week included a claim of 64/256/512 GB storage options and a number of photo leaks including the A11 chip, display assembly and other components, and a 3D sensing camera. We also went hands-on with some new iPhone 8 cases and a dummy model, yielding a good idea of how the new phone and accessories may look together.

Finally, while the all-new iPhone 8 will undoubtedly be the star of the show, Apple is expected to also introduce new "iPhone 7s" models next month. We've just seen a solid photo leak of the bare logic board for the iPhone 7s Plus, which looks very similar to the same part from the iPhone 7 Plus but which matches the pin layout of the leaked A11 chip and appears to confirm the presence of an Intel LTE modem.

iOS 11's SOS Feature Allows You to Temporarily Disable Touch ID and Require Passcode
default.jpg With iOS 11 likely set for public release in less than a month, we're still learning new details as Apple continues to tweak things in the beta period. A few new tidbits have recently come to light, including the discovery that the SOS feature will allow you to temporarily disable Touch ID, a tweak to Safari that will strip off Google's Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) cruft when sharing links, and a fix that will prevent an iPhone 7 passcode-guessing hardware box from working.

Some early prototype Control Center and App Switcher videos were also discovered in iOS 11 betas, but it's unclear if these ideas were discarded or if they'll end up being specific to the iPhone 8.

Apple is continuing its rapid seeding of new betas to developers and public beta testers, pushing out the seventh developer betas of iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, tvOS 11, and watchOS 4, along with corresponding sixth public betas of all but watchOS.

This is just the first wave of eighth-generation Core chips to be announced, with additional low-power "Cannon Lake" and higher-power "Coffee Lake" chips yet to come.

Keep an eye out for our hands-on video comparing the Note 8 to iPhone 8 rumors later today.

In addition to the Note 8, Samsung has also confirmed it is working on a smart speaker that will compete against an increasingly crowded field. Apple will be joining the market in December with its HomePod, previewed at WWDC back in June.

AccuWeather for iOS Sent Location Data to Monetization Company Even When Location Sharing Was Off
default.jpg Popular iOS weather forecasting app AccuWeather found itself in some hot water this week after it was discovered that the app was sending users' location information to monetization company Reveal Mobile, even when the users denied explicit permission for the app to access location information. In the absence of this permission, Reveal Mobile's tools built into the AccuWeather app wouldn't collect your GPS location but would still collect your Wi-Fi router name and BSSID, which can frequently be used to find your location fairly accurately.

After AccuWeather and Reveal Mobile initially released a joint statement attempting to explain "misinterpretation" of the SDK tools, AccuWeather yesterday updated its app to completely remove the Reveal Mobile SDK.

Apple Watch and iPhone 8 Rumors, New Betas, Intel's Ice Lake Chips - MacRumors

While the iPhone will undoubtedly be the highlight of a likely September media event, signs are pointing toward the launch of an updated Apple Watch as well. Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a couple of reports about the "Series 3" model in recent days, saying there will be no "obvious change" to the form factor compared to current models.

Kuo also says LTE cellular connectivity will be the main selling point, although it is unlikely users will be able to make direct phone calls from the watch. There is a possibility that VoIP services like FaceTime or Skype could work though. The updated Apple Watch is said to be in the "final testing phase," with mass production likely starting soon.

One interesting question about this likely September event is where it will be held. The Steve Jobs Theater at the new Apple Park campus would seem to be the clear first-choice location, but the campus remains under construction, so it's unclear if it will be ready in time to host an event. The latest drone video does show a newly paved walkway to the theater, so perhaps there's still a chance.

New Blurry Videos Potentially Show iPhone 8 on Production Line at Factory
Excitement about the iPhone 8 continues to build, and this week we got a look at a couple of short blurry videos that allegedly show rear shells for the device being produced in a Chinese factory. A separate leak shows claimed photos of the internals of the induction charging pad accessory rumored to be launching alongside or somewhat after the iPhone 8.

Finally, designer Maksim Petriv has mocked up what some high-profile apps like Netflix and Spotify, as well as the App Store, could look like on the iPhone 8, taking advantage of the much taller display and either embracing or hiding the notch at the top for the camera and sensors.

Lack of iPad Pro Smart Connector Accessories Blamed on Long Wait Times for Components
Coming up on two years since the debut of the Smart Connector on the original iPad Pro, there are still very few accessories on the market supporting the connector. In fact, Logitech is still the only third-party company offering accessories for it.

A new report outlines some of the challenges accessory makers are facing in bringing Smart Connector-compatible products to market, including long wait times and high costs for the required components, a desire to differentiate themselves with unique product designs that take time to implement, and a general satisfaction with the more commonly used Bluetooth technology featured in these types of products.

Intel Shares Details on Upcoming 'Ice Lake' Chips to Follow Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake
It feels like we just got Intel's latest Kaby Lake chips, but the chipmaker is already sharing information several generations ahead, this week revealing the roadmap for future "Ice Lake" chips that will be manufactured on a 10nm+ process. More imminently, we're looking forward to Coffee Lake chips being introduced starting next week, with a shift to Cannon Lake chips for notebooks likely in early 2018. Ice Lake for desktops and notebooks should follow in late 2018 or early 2019 as Intel continues its cadence of shrinking and optimizing its chip manufacturing processes.

A Ten-Minute Silent Song Is Soaring Up the iTunes Charts

The song rose into the top 50 on the U.S. iTunes Store charts, and it's still just barely hanging in the top 100.
