iPhone 8 Rumors, Federighi in Charge of Siri, Steve Jobs Theater, New Beats Headphones - MacRumors

Following Apple's media event next Tuesday, September 12, we're likely to see a typical pattern when it comes to availability of the new iPhone with pre-orders likely coming that Friday, September 15 and an official launch date one week later on September 22. That's similar to most past releases, and in line with what some carriers are reporting for their timelines.

As we've been hearing for months, supplies of the OLED "iPhone 8" are expected to be extremely tight at launch. It's a refrain we hear ahead of every iPhone launch, but the warnings are especially dire this year amid rumors that Apple was slower than usual in ramping up mass production due to failed efforts at incorporating Touch ID under the display, OLED display quality control problems, and technical challenges with new 3D sensors.

On the rumor front, we've heard that users may be able to activate Siri on the iPhone 8 by holding down the elongated power button, while we've seen new photos of alleged iPhone 8 SIM card trays in silver and a copper-like gold color.

For all of the latest news and rumors as we head down the homestretch, make sure to check out our iPhone 8 roundup, which has everything you need to know about the all-new device.

Apple Acknowledges Siri Leadership Has Officially Moved From Eddy Cue to Craig Federighi
Apple late last week quietly revealed that responsibility for Siri has been moved from services chief Eddy Cue to head of software engineering Craig Federighi. Cue had overseen Siri for a number of years as part of his diverse role covering areas such as iTunes, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Pay, and Maps, but with Siri gaining further integration as a core feature of Apple's operating systems, it seems appropriate to move it under Federighi's watch.

While the change was only just made official, it's clear Federighi has played a key role with Siri for quite some time, handling on-stage demonstrations of it at recent media events and appearing alongside Cue in news features covering it.

Drone pilot Duncan Sinfield has shared some last-minute footage of the campus including a glimpse of the theater, revealing a beehive of activity inside the lobby of the building and people sitting on benches outside. Workers are likely still putting the finishing touches on the theater even as executives are preparing and rehearsing their presentations for next week's event.

Bloomberg also shared a few tidbits about the new theater, including word that the building's two main elevators rotate as they descend and ascend, and that the product demonstration area is hidden by a large moveable wall that will swing open after the event to reveal the hands-on area.
