Following Apple's media event next Tuesday, September 12, we're likely to see a typical pattern when it comes to availability of the new iPhone with
pre-orders likely coming that Friday, September 15 and an official launch date one week later on September 22. That's similar to most past releases, and in line with what some carriers are reporting for their timelines.
As we've been hearing for months, supplies of the OLED "iPhone 8" are expected to be
extremely tight at launch. It's a refrain we hear ahead of every iPhone launch, but the warnings are especially dire this year amid rumors that Apple was slower than usual in ramping up mass production due to failed efforts at incorporating Touch ID under the display, OLED display quality control problems, and technical challenges with new 3D sensors.
On the rumor front, we've heard that users
may be able to activate Siri on the iPhone 8 by holding down the elongated power button, while we've seen new photos of alleged
iPhone 8 SIM card trays in silver and a copper-like gold color.
