iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Review Roundup: Powerful Devices With Great Cameras Set Stage for iPhone X
default.jpg Tomorrow is the launch day for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple Watch Series 3, and Apple TV 4K, and that means nearly every day this week has seen a set of embargoed reviews from news publications that had the opportunity to spend some advance time with the new products.

The devices gaining the most attention have been the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, which reviewers found come with some very nice upgrades, especially in the camera department. With the iPhone X right around the corner, some find it hard to recommend the iPhone 8 family, but premium pricing and expected severe shortages for the iPhone X mean that phone won't be for everyone. And with that in mind, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are worthy upgrades, especially if you're coming from a phone that's more than a generation old.

Reviews of the Apple Watch Series 3 were actually fairly mixed, with testers appreciating the idea of using LTE connectivity right on the watch to leave their iPhones behind but finding a few bugs and concerns over battery life hampering the experience somewhat. Those issues aside, the speedier processor makes everything feel smoother and some nice upgrades like Siri being able to speak and an improved heart rate monitor make for a definite improvement over the previous generation.

Finally, there's the Apple TV 4K, which reviewers rated as a solid set-top box but with a few drawbacks such as price, lack of 4K support in the YouTube app, and automatic upscaling of content to HDR format that can actually degrade the quality of lower-resolution content. Still, Apple's solid pricing on 4K iTunes content makes up for some of the premium pricing on the box itself, and Apple's user interface is top-notch, so it's definitely a good option for those looking for a set-top box.

Here's a Look at the First Wave of Augmented Reality ARKit Apps Hitting the iOS App Store
default.jpg Augmented reality is a large part of Apple's vision for the future of iOS, and the new ARKit tools in iOS 11 are allowing developers to quickly build new AR experiences for users. Take a look at our roundup of some of the ARKit apps that hit the App Store on day one, and there are many more hitting the store every day.

ARKit requires a device running an A9 chip or later, but that includes the last several generations of iPhones and iPads, so most users will have access to the new AR experiences, which include games, virtual measurement apps, lifestyle apps, and more.

iPhone X Production Faces Further Delays, Will Start in Mid-October
default.jpg iPhone X supplies have long been expected to be extremely tight, and Apple essentially confirmed those rumors when it announced last week that the device won't go up for pre-orders until October 27. If one analyst's latest research is to be believed, however, supplies might be even tighter than initially expected. According to the report, just last week Apple firmed up production orders for the iPhone X with mass production not starting until mid-October. So hold on to your hats – that October 27 pre-order launch is going to be crazy.

If you're still on the fence about the iPhone X, you might want to check out a couple of our articles that proved popular this week. One took a look at everything you need to know about the controversial camera and sensor "notch" at the top of the display, while the second outlined 50 new features in the iPhone X.

New Apple File System Coming in macOS High Sierra Won't Work With Fusion Drives
default.jpg macOS High Sierra launches on Monday, and with it comes an all-new Apple File System (APFS) designed to improve performance on Macs with flash storage. If your Mac has speedy flash storage, it will automatically be converted to use APFS during the upgrade process, but Macs with traditional hard drives or Fusion Drives that pair a traditional hard drive with a small flash drive won't be converted.

That's causing a little bit of a problem for early beta testers using machines with Fusion Drives. Apple had originally planned on supporting APFS for Fusion Drives, and early beta testers had their Fusion Drives converted to APFS. Apple has apparently decided APFS isn't quite ready for primetime on Fusion Drives, however, so those who converted during the beta period are now faced with some work having to convert back to the HFS+ file system.

Hackers Using iCloud's Find My iPhone Feature to Remotely Lock Macs and Demand Ransom Payments
default.jpg There appears to be a growing trend of hackers using iCloud's Find My iPhone feature to remotely lock Macs and hold them for ransom. The attack is possible even on iCloud accounts protected by two-factor authentication, as Apple allows lost devices to be locked with only an iCloud login in case the lost device is your secondary device needed for two-factor authentication.

Long story short, make sure you use a strong, unique password on your iCloud account and any other online accounts you have, using a password manager if necessary to keep track of all of them. With the number of security breaches happening all the time, many people have at least some of their information floating around out there, and reusing passwords is just asking for trouble.

If you're hit by one of these attacks, you'll need to contact Apple, and they'll try to help you regain control of your Mac once you prove you're the legitimate owner.

Apple's New Face ID Biometric System Works in the Dark and When Your Face is Obscured by Hats and Beards
default.jpg We've seen a ton of questions and confusion about the new Face ID authentication feature coming on the iPhone X, so we put together an article addressing many of those issues, including whether it will work in the dark, if you're wearing a hat, or if you grow a beard. Apple executive Craig Federighi also responded to an email from a MacRumors reader to explain that it should even work with "most" sunglasses, while users concerned about thieves unlocking the device by holding it up to your face should know that you can easily disable Face ID as you're handing the phone over.

Speaking of Federighi, one of the major topics of discussion after Tuesday's event was the difficulty he had using Face ID on the demo device, which forced him to switch to a backup device. Rather than a failure of Face ID itself, however, the issue was that during setup for the event several people other than Craig had accidentally triggered Face ID scans, and once there have been two failed scans in a row the iPhone will force you to enter a passcode.

Apple Releases iTunes 12.7 With Major Changes, Including No Built-In App Store
default.jpg For years, users have complained about iTunes becoming increasingly bloated in trying to handle too many tasks, complicating the user experience to the point of frustration. With the release of iTunes 12.7 this week, Apple began addressing those concerns in a surprising way: completely removing the App Store functionality from iTunes on the desktop. Going forward you'll need to buy, update, and redownload all of your apps through your iOS devices, and you won't be able to load saved older versions of apps onto your devices through iTunes.

Beyond the App Store removal, Apple also streamlined organization of several other content types in iTunes 12.7, moving iTunes U content into the Podcasts section, filing Internet Radio under your music library, and removing support for managing ringtones, which should now be done directly on your iOS devices.

macOS High Sierra Will Be Released on September 25
default.jpg During Tuesday's media event, Apple announced that iOS 11, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11 will all officially launch to the public next Tuesday, September 19. But given that this wasn't a Mac-focused event, the company didn't make any mention of launch plans for macOS High Sierra. Apple's preview website for the new operating system was, however, updated to reveal that macOS High Sierra will launch on Monday, September 25.

High Sierra focuses on under-the-hood changes such as a new Apple File System, more efficient HEIF (images) and HEVC (video) file formats, and beefier support for VR and external graphics. On the more visible side, Photos and Safari are receiving some updated features while Siri gains a more natural voice and Spotlight gets more powerful with support for additional content types.

AirPods Wireless Charging Case Rumored for December Launch at $69
default.jpgWhile the iPhone 8 and iPhone X will support inductive wireless charging, Apple's own AirPower multi-device charging mat isn't coming until 2018. To allow AirPods to charge on the AirPower mat, Apple this week announced a new AirPods charging case that will be sold separately and include the technology. The fine print on the company's website says only that the new case will be launching in 2018, but one report claims it will actually become available in December and will be priced at $69.

Until the launch of AirPower, iPhone 8 and iPhone X users will need to rely on third-party charging mats based on the Qi standard if they want to charge their devices wirelessly. We've rounded up a bunch of existing and upcoming ones over a range of price points, so there's already a lot to choose from.

Apple Raises Prices on All 256 and 512GB iPad Pro Models by $50
default.jpg Amidst all of the product introductions on Tuesday, Apple quietly made one other change to its lineup, raising the price of all 256 and 512 GB iPad Pro models by $50. Flash memory prices have been rapidly increasing in recent months, and Apple is apparently feeling the squeeze, which resulted in a rare mid-cycle price increase not related to international currency exchange rate adjustments. With the increases, a top-of-the-line 512 GB 12.9-inch iPad Pro with LTE connectivity will set you back $1279 in the U.S. and even more in other countries.

iPhone 8 Rumors, Federighi in Charge of Siri, Steve Jobs Theater, New Beats Headphones - MacRumors

Following Apple's media event next Tuesday, September 12, we're likely to see a typical pattern when it comes to availability of the new iPhone with pre-orders likely coming that Friday, September 15 and an official launch date one week later on September 22. That's similar to most past releases, and in line with what some carriers are reporting for their timelines.

As we've been hearing for months, supplies of the OLED "iPhone 8" are expected to be extremely tight at launch. It's a refrain we hear ahead of every iPhone launch, but the warnings are especially dire this year amid rumors that Apple was slower than usual in ramping up mass production due to failed efforts at incorporating Touch ID under the display, OLED display quality control problems, and technical challenges with new 3D sensors.

On the rumor front, we've heard that users may be able to activate Siri on the iPhone 8 by holding down the elongated power button, while we've seen new photos of alleged iPhone 8 SIM card trays in silver and a copper-like gold color.

For all of the latest news and rumors as we head down the homestretch, make sure to check out our iPhone 8 roundup, which has everything you need to know about the all-new device.

Apple Acknowledges Siri Leadership Has Officially Moved From Eddy Cue to Craig Federighi
Apple late last week quietly revealed that responsibility for Siri has been moved from services chief Eddy Cue to head of software engineering Craig Federighi. Cue had overseen Siri for a number of years as part of his diverse role covering areas such as iTunes, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Pay, and Maps, but with Siri gaining further integration as a core feature of Apple's operating systems, it seems appropriate to move it under Federighi's watch.

While the change was only just made official, it's clear Federighi has played a key role with Siri for quite some time, handling on-stage demonstrations of it at recent media events and appearing alongside Cue in news features covering it.

New Apple Park Drone Video Shows Off Steve Jobs Theater Ahead of Next Week's Event
We're less than a week away from the big event, but aside from the new products being introduced, there's one other star of the show: the Steve Jobs Theater on the new Apple Park campus. Drone pilot Duncan Sinfield has shared some last-minute footage of the campus including a glimpse of the theater, revealing a beehive of activity inside the lobby of the building and people sitting on benches outside. Workers are likely still putting the finishing touches on the theater even as executives are preparing and rehearsing their presentations for next week's event.

Bloomberg also shared a few tidbits about the new theater, including word that the building's two main elevators rotate as they descend and ascend, and that the product demonstration area is hidden by a large moveable wall that will swing open after the event to reveal the hands-on area.

Boston Red Sox Used Apple Watch to Illicitly Steal Hand Signals From Opposing Teams

In video clips provided to baseball investigators, a team trainer was seen multiple times glancing at his Apple Watch to receive information from others viewing footage in the video replay booth before passing the signals on to his own players. Apple Seeds Tenth Beta of iOS 11 to Developers and Public Beta Testers
We're truly in uncharted territory now, as Apple this week seeded the tenth developer beta of iOS 11, along with a corresponding ninth public beta version. It's the first time an iOS release has reached double digits in developer betas. Besides iOS 11, Apple also released a tenth developer beta version of tvOS, while late last week saw the ninth developer beta of macOS High Sierra.
