'Pokémon Go' Becomes a Smash Hit, but Faces Privacy Concerns and Other Issues Last week saw the highly anticipated launch of augmented reality game "Pokémon Go,"and despite a limited geographic rollout it has become a phenomenon, rapidly becoming the "biggest mobile game in U.S. history." The game's popularity drove a massive spike in Nintendo's stock price, but its social nature and real-world environment have also raised some issues and skepticism over the prospect of retailer sponsorships. There have also been privacy concerns, as those using their Google sign-ins on the app were originally granting the developers full access to their Google accounts, an issue that was quickly rectified with an update to the app.   Read Full Article Popular Stories Jul 14, 2016 Clearest Shot Yet of iPhone 7 Case Confirms Subtle Design Tweaks As we get closer to the official unveiling of the iPhone 7, the quality of the leaks we're seeing is starting to increase, led this week by a very clear shot of an alleged iPhone 7 rear casing. The photo shows off the enlarged rear camera and the lack of antenna bands across the rear of the shell, and a separate photo set claims to show the rear casing in all four of the current iPhone colors. Other photos, likely showing mockups, have reignited claims of a Smart Connector on the rear of the larger iPhone 7 Plus, although rumors have cooled on this detail in recent weeks. And finally, a short video shows off several possible casings with no headphone jack and a second speaker, another detail rumors have been split on. One final rumor claims the iPhone 7's battery could have about 14 percent higher capacity than the iPhone 6s battery. We don't know, however, whether that will translate to longer battery life or if the iPhone 7 will require the larger battery just to maintain the current battery life.   Read Full Article Apple's PC Sales Fall Behind ASUS as Buyers Await Next-Generation MacBook Pro and Other New Models Our Buyer's Guide shows almost all red for Apple's Mac lineup, and that's the likely reason for a decline in Apple's Mac shipments during the second quarter that saw the company drop to fifth place behind ASUS in worldwide PC sales. We're expecting some Mac updates in the second half of the year, led by a redesigned MacBook Pro with a thinner chassis and an OLED "touch bar" replacing the function keys, and that will likely help boost Mac sales in the coming quarters.   Read Full Article Lenovo Ad Pokes Fun at Apple Fans, MacRumors Gets a Mention Lenovo recently released a new ad for its Yoga 900S 2-in-1 notebook, using a stereotypical "iGuy" Apple fan to compare the MacBook to Lenovo's device. The iGuy touts Apple innovation and design, but consistently finds his MacBook falling short in comparison to the Yoga 900S with its reversible hinge, higher-resolution touchscreen display, and multiple ports. Amusingly, MacRumors even gets a mention in the ad, with the Apple fan saying "I think I read" on MacRumors that the next MacBook will have a reversible hinge like the Yoga 900S. The next MacBook won't, but we appreciate the mention!   Read Full Article iOS Device Ransom Attacks Continue to Target Users in U.S. and Europe In yet another example of why it's important to use strong, unique passwords, there's apparently been a resurgence in hackers using compromised iCloud accounts to remotely lock users' devices and hold their contents for ransom. There's no evidence of a direct breach of Apple's systems, but users with weak passwords or passwords that have been used elsewhere and then compromised are at risk of having criminals take over their iCloud accounts. Apple's Find My iPhone feature then lets those criminals lock the devices and display messages on their screens to demand payment in order to release the phones. Beyond strong passwords, users should also employ two-factor authentication when possible to ensure that a password alone is not enough to gain access to an account.   Read Full Article Apple's Dedication to Accessibility Highlighted by Story of Blind Engineer Apple has long garnered praise for its efforts in ensuring its devices are accessible for those with disabilities, and over the weekend Mashable published an inspiring look at blind engineer Jordyn Castor, who started as an intern with Apple before moving into a full-time role with Apple's accessibility team. There's a chance that at least the larger iPhone 7 Plus could also see a bump to 256 GB at the high end. Still up for debate is whether the loss of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 will mean the addition of a second speaker in its place. Thunderbolt Display Discontinued, iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Rumors, MacRumors Podcast, tvOS 10 Overview - MacRumors

Apple Discontinues Thunderbolt Display Apple's Thunderbolt Display debuted almost five years ago, and while there has been much discussion over the years about possible updates, Apple last week announced it has decided to discontinue the display. In its statement to the press announcing the discontinuation, Apple pointed to the "great third-party options" on the market, leading to questions about whether the company has an updated display in the works. It's now looking like Apple is indeed still planning to release an updated display, complete with an integrated graphics card to presumably help drive a high-resolution 4K or 5K display even for machines that lack enough graphics processing power on their own. It's not clear when this new display might launch, but hopefully it'll arrive later this year alongside redesigned MacBook Pro models and perhaps an updated Mac Pro.   Read Full Article Popular Stories Jun 30, 2016 Latest Alleged Leaked Image of iPhone 7 Depicts Larger Rear Camera iPhone 7 rumors and leaks are continuing to ramp up, led this week by some new photos showing off claimed rear cases for both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 7 case in particular gives us our best look yet at the rear camera, which is substantially larger than on the iPhone 6s. While it apparently won't gain the dual-lens camera headed for the iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone 7 should still see some substantial camera improvements. In other iPhone 7 news, we're now hearing that the previously rumored "deep blue" color option is actually a very dark Space Gray or Space Black color. In a lawsuit filed this week in Florida, Apple is accused of infringing on a series of hand-drawn images of a multi-function portable device from 1992 with its iPhone, iPad, and iPod devices. The drawings depict an "everything but the kitchen sink" device including a hardware keyboard, solar cells, a 3.5-inch disk drive, and an 80 MB hard drive. We also have an overview of Apple's upcoming Remote app for iOS that makes it easy to control the Apple TV, including a landscape mode for gaming controls.   Read Full Article Many Apple Watch Bands and Bundles Currently Listed as 'Sold Out' In recent weeks, an increasing number of Apple Watch bands and even watch-band combinations have become listed as "sold out" in Apple's online store, sparking speculation about whether they will be coming back into stock at some point or if it is a sign of pending changes to Apple's watch lineup. The Apple Watch 2 is expected to debut later this year, perhaps around the same September timeframe expected for the iPhone 7, so it seems to be getting a little close to that window for new "summer" bands to be in the works. As a result, it's possible many of these bands may just have limited production and when they're gone, they're gone. We're also starting to hear a bit about what we might be able to expect for the Apple Watch 3 in 2017 or later, as crazy as that sounds. While the Apple Watch uses an OLED display and the Apple Watch 2 is expected to use the same technology, Apple is said to be looking at a micro-LED display for the Apple Watch around late 2017, leveraging technology Apple gained with its 2014 acquisition of LuxVue.   Read Full Article Here's the New 'Home' App for Controlling HomeKit Devices in iOS 10 iOS 10 brings a much-requested "Home" app for centralizing control of HomeKit-enabled devices around the house, and we've put together a video overview of the new app. It's still a bit rough around the edges and manufacturers need to update their products and apps to fully support iOS 10, but the Home app is a major improvement to the HomeKit experience. And there's much more still to come.   Read Full Article Apple's 2016 iPhone Update to Focus on Headphone Jack Removal, Major Changes Won't Come Until 2017 Rumors that Apple is planning to remove the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 later this year have been circulating for months, but the mainstream media is now starting to show increased confidence. The Wall Street Journal this week reported the headphone jack will indeed be removed but the device will otherwise include only "subtle changes" in appearance, marking a significant deviation from Apple's usual two-year cadence of design changes. With the mainstream media now jumping on board with the headphone rumor, that's sparked quite a bit of discussion about the impact of such a change, and we also took a look at one third-party adapter that allows existing headphones with a standard 3.5 mm plug to be connected to a Lightning port. In other iPhone 7 rumors, we're hearing the front earpiece and sensors may see some changes in their sizes and arrangement, making existing protective films and cases incompatible with the new phone, while a sketchy report suggests the device could include dual-SIM support. With iOS 10, Apple is also bringing its stock apps to the App Store, allowing users to delete unwanted ones and letting Apple update them separately from full iOS updates. Apple is also opening up significant parts of iOS to third-party developers, letting them integrate with Siri, Messages, Maps, and Phone. Siri intelligence is also coming to Photos and QuickType keyboard suggestions, while a dedicated Home app brings all of your HomeKit devices together in one place. Apple also announced a new Swift Playgrounds app that will allow kids and others to learn coding in Apple's open source Swift language right on an iPad.   Read Full Article Apple Unveils macOS 'Sierra' With New Continuity Features, Window Tabs, Apple Watch Login, Siri, and More We had seen some slips on Apple's website hinting this change might be coming, but Apple today made it official that OS X is now known as macOS, matching the naming convention used for Apple's other operating systems. Version 10.12 of macOS is known as Sierra, and it brings a number of upgrades including support for Siri, an auto unlock feature linked to the Apple Watch, tabbed windows for all apps (including third-party ones), and significant improvements to Continuity and iCloud Drive. Other improvements include a new Dock and Control Center to make it easier to find apps and settings, as well as enhancements to Messages such as a Scribble feature that lets you quickly spell out responses by drawing with your finger.
