Netflix made waves this week when it suddenly
stopped supporting AirPlay on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, preventing Netflix content from being beamed to a TV from those devices.
Netflix initially said the decision was due to "technical limitations," but in a statement provided to
MacRumors, it later explained that "with AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences."
Of course, with Apple having previewed its
Netflix competitor Apple TV+ a few weeks ago, some believe that this is nothing more than platform wars as Apple enters the streaming video space.
In related news,
Netflix is raising its prices for existing subscribers in May as expected. Its "basic" tier will rise from $7.99 to $8.99 per month, its "standard" HD tier will rise from $10.99 to $12.99 per month, and its "premium" 4K tier will rise from $13.99 to $15.99 per month in the United States.
