Apple Watch ECG Update, iPhone XR Sales, Access Your Locked-Out iPhone for $3,900 - MacRumors

logo.png
Back in September at the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 4, Apple showed off a new feature that will let users take electrocardiograms (ECGs) right from their wrists, checking for irregularities in cardiac function. The feature wasn't quite ready for launch alongside the new Apple Watch, however, with Apple promising it would be available in the United States later in the year.

It now looks like that launch is right around the corner, as Apple has begun training retail store and authorized service provider staff on details related to its rollout. The ECG feature will require watchOS 5.1.2, which has been in beta testing for nearly a month but doesn't yet have the ECG capabilities activated. Based on the staff training, however, it looks like we can expect a launch in the near future!

Apple's New iPhone XR Has Been the Most Popular and Best Selling iPhone Since October Launch
default.jpg Following reports that Apple has cut production of the iPhone XR due to lower-than-expected demand, Apple executive Greg Joswiak this week spoke out to say that the iPhone XR has outsold both the iPhone XS and XS Max every day since its launch last month.

Of course, that claim doesn't directly address whether Apple has cut production of the device or met internal sales targets, so we'll have to see how things go. With Apple no longer reporting unit sales in its earnings releases, there's a lot of uneasiness among investors.

Apple Promo Offers Up to $100 in Extra Trade-In Credit Toward New iPhone XR or XS
default.jpg In an effort to encourage iPhone users to upgrade to newer models ahead of the holidays, Apple has launched a new promo offering up to $100 extra trade-in credit toward a new iPhone XR or XS.

Newer models like the iPhone 8 only receive $25 in bonus credit, but if you've got an iPhone 6 Plus, 6s, or 6s Plus, you'll get the full $100 bonus. You might be able to get more by reselling your device on the open market, but if you're looking for simplicity, it's hard to beat Apple for instant trade-in credit.

Microsoft Neck-and-Neck With Apple for Title of Most Valuable U.S. Company
default.jpgWith Apple's stock price having dropped around 20 percent this month following concerns over the holiday quarter and Apple's decision to stop reporting unit sales, Microsoft has caught up with Apple in the standings of most valuable public U.S. companies. The two companies have been swapping back and forth for the top spot this week, with each company currently valued at around $850 billion.

Apple's stock price has also been weighed down by concerns that President Trump may impose a 10 percent tariff on iPhones and notebooks imported from China. Apple has so far escaped the Trump administration's Chinese tariffs, but it's unclear whether it'll be able to continue to do so.

DriveSavers Lets Consumers Retrieve Data From Locked iOS Devices for $3,900
default.jpg Locked out of your iPhone and Apple can't help you get in? If you're willing to pony up close to $4,000, DriveSavers says it can help by using a proprietary method to bypass passcode lockouts.

DriveSavers says it's the first company to offer such a solution to consumers, but it's going to be very strict about ensuring proper ownership of devices before unlocking them for customers. According to the company, the most popular reason for consumers using the service is to access the devices of deceased loved ones, and the company may require legal documentation before it will unlock devices in these scenarios.

Apple Facing Class Action Lawsuit Over Lack of Filters in MacBooks and iMacs Causing Trapped Dust
default.jpg Well, this is a weird one. Apple has been hit by a new class-action lawsuit claiming the company has been selling iMacs and notebooks with faulty ventilation systems that allow dust to collect in the internals of the machines, leading to thermal throttling and internal screen smudges. The lawsuit argues that Apple should be filtering the airflow on these devices to prevent dust accumulation, and is seeking compensation for customers who have in some cases shelled out hundreds of dollars for repairs on their machines.

New iPad Pro Models May Be Prone to Bending
default.jpg You knew it was coming. Almost as soon as people got their hands on the new iPad Pro, they were inevitably going to try bending it. And yes, it does bend, as does just about every other tablet, particularly ones pushing the boundaries of thinness like the iPad Pro. Moral of the story: Take care of your very expensive gadgets.

In other iPad Pro news, Apple this week released a new ad offering "5 reasons iPad Pro can be your next computer." The new iPad Pro is certainly a beast when it comes to raw performance, and Apple is definitely pushing hard on the narrative that it's a capable computer replacement at this point.

Apple Considering Low-Cost Apple TV Dongle to Provide Wider Access to Upcoming Streaming Service
default.jpg With Apple reportedly getting closer to launching its long-rumored streaming video service, the company is said to be considering launching a cheaper Apple TV dongle to provide wider access to the service. Rather than the current Apple TV set-top box that starts at $149, a dongle would plug directly into the back of a television set. Similar dongles from Google and Amazon cost $25 to $35, although Apple's version likely won't be quite that cheap.

Apple Reportedly Cuts iPhone XS and iPhone XR Production Orders Amid Lower-Than-Expected Demand
default.jpg It's always a good idea to take reports like this with a huge grain of salt, but The Wall Street Journal claims Apple is slashing production of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR due to lower than expected demand. It's a refrain we hear every year, but investors already nervous from Apple's announcement that it will no longer report unit sales in its quarterly earnings reports have run for the exits, and Apple's stock price has dropped over 20 percent so far this month.

Reports also indicate Apple may be working to reduce the price of the iPhone XR in Japan via carrier subsidies.

Those had been the last two remaining AirPort models, with the AirPort Express and the 3TB AirPort Time Capsule having previously sold out.

Hands-On With New Mac mini and MacBook Air, Apple Repair Programs, New MacBook Pro Graphics Options - MacRumors

Last week was a busy one with the launch of the new iPad Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini, and we've had a chance to go hands-on with the latest Mac mini, which now comes in Space Gray.

There's a lot to like about the new Mac mini, with significantly better performance and port options, but the improvements don't necessarily come cheap, as the entry-level price has risen from $499 to $799. And if you want to max everything out, you'll pay over $4,000.

iFixit naturally took the new Mac mini apart, finding that only the RAM is easily replaceable with most other major components soldered to the logic board. But at least it's fairly easy to get inside if you do need to replace something.

And if you happen to be the proud owner of both a Mac mini and an iPad, you might want to consider the possibility of using the iPad as a display for the desktop computer, courtesy of the Luna Display wireless dongle.

Apple Launches iPhone X Display Module Replacement Program to Address Touch Issues
Apple late last week announced a pair of repair programs to address issues with its products, led by an iPhone X display module replacement program. Users who are experiencing problems with their displays failing to respond to touch, responding intermittently, or reacting without being touched should contact Apple for free repairs.

For owners of Apple's 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, Apple has also launched a service program to address failures of 128 and 256 GB SSDs that can lead to data loss. Apple recommends that users whose serial numbers fall in the affected range have their machines serviced as soon as possible in order to avoid data loss.

Apple's New 2018 MacBook Air vs. Old MacBook Air
We shared a couple of videos about the new MacBook Air this week, including an early hands-on look at the new notebook and a follow-up comparison to the previous-generation model.

Compared to its predecessor, the new MacBook Air is smaller and slightly lighter and has new color options, and of course has a new Retina display that's much sharper. The new MacBook Air is $200 more than the previous generation, but it's well worth the extra money for all of the improvements.

In other MacBook Air news, a curious Geekbench result from earlier this month suggests that Apple may have considered offering a faster 1.8 GHz Core i7 processor alongside the 1.6 GHz Core i5 found in the released machine. It's not clear why this faster option didn't make it into the released version, so we don't know if it was scrapped entirely or if there's a chance Apple could offer it as an upgrade option at some point in the future.

15-Inch MacBook Pro AMD Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Options Now Available to Order
Following its October 30 media event, Apple quietly announced in its MacBook Air press release that the MacBook Pro would also be gaining new AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics options this month, and those options have just gone live. You now have the option of upgrading the high-end stock 15-inch MacBook Pro with either Radeon Pro Vega 16 graphics for $250 or Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics for $350.

In addition to the new MacBook Pro graphics options, Apple this week also launched a new (PRODUCT)RED version of the Apple Watch Sport Loop as well as a tweaked version of the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock, although any differences in the dock appear limited to internal changes as the external look and specs have not changed.

Amazon Inks Deal to Sell New Apple Products Like iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and 2018 iPad Pro
Amazon and Apple have struck a deal that will see Amazon selling a number of new Apple products through its online storefronts in multiple countries. Devices like the new iPad Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, Apple Watch Series 4, and Beats headphones will be available on Amazon through Apple-authorized resellers.

Not all Apple products will be appearing on Amazon, however, with the HomePod being one notable exception. Of course, the HomePod competes with Amazon's Echo lineup of smart speakers, so perhaps the omission shouldn't be a surprise.

Apple's Confusing Mac Lineup: MacBook Air vs. MacBook
With the launch of the new MacBook Air, there's quite a bit of overlap with the existing MacBook and even the non-Touch Bar 13-inch MacBook Pro, and in a recent video, we tried to make some sense of Apple's new notebook lineup.

The new MacBook Air is probably the best bet for most people, so check out our launch coverage including benchmarks and press reviews, Unlike with the MacBook and MacBook Pro, the battery in the new MacBook Air can be replaced individually, without needing to replace the entire top case that includes the keyboard and trackpad. It's a minor win for repairability, but it's still pretty tough to get inside and fix much.

Mac Mini 2018 Reviews Roundup: Long-Awaited Update Should Impress Fans and Pro Users, But Upgrade Options Can Get Pricey
Apple's first new Mac mini in four years has arrived, and it comes with some significant upgrades and a new Space Gray color. Check out our roundup of media reviews, which generally found it to be an excellent upgrade that even pro users can take advantage of, although some upgrades like maxing out SSD storage can get very expensive.

The new Mac mini comes in with very good benchmark scores, and while the machine uses removable RAM modules that could allow for future upgrades, it does require a fair amount of work and isn't considered a user-upgradeable component by Apple.

New AirPods Model Numbers Show Up in Bluetooth Database, Hinting at Upcoming Release
We've been hearing for some time about an update to Apple's popular AirPods earphones, and this week saw more evidence in the form of a registration in the Bluetooth regulatory database.

We're expecting to see new AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, but it's still up in the air whether the new models are going to get the rumored wireless charging alongside the company's troubled AirPower charging mat that was unveiled 14 months ago but has yet to see a release.

There's no word on when these updated AirPods will launch, as Apple's September and October media events were perfect opportunities to unveil them but they failed to make an appearance. At this point, we would likely either see a press release launch in next month or have to wait until a potential early 2019 media event.

Apple Reports 4Q 2018 Results: $14.1B Profit on $62.9B Revenue, 46.9M iPhones
Apple last week reported record-breaking September quarter earnings, buoyed by a strong year-over-year increase in average selling price of its iPhone lineup due to premium pricing on the iPhone X and its successors.

That rising average selling price was related to another announcement Apple made on its earnings conference call, with Apple revealing it will stop reporting unit sales numbers for iPhone, iPad, and Mac starting this quarter. In an environment where Apple has been able to increase revenue and profits even in the face of declining or flat device sales, Apple believes unit sales are no longer an accurate indicator of Apple's business strength.

The reporting change generated some concern among investors, and that caused Apple's stock to decline roughly 10 percent over the next few days, leading Apple to lose its status as a trillion-dollar company.
