Kuo: No Apple Pencil Support for 2018 iPhones, Upcoming 6.1-Inch Model to Be Slightly Delayed
default.jpg Speaking of those three new iPhones, we're continuing to hear rumors about what we can expect from them. Analysts at Barclays recently suggested Apple Pencil support could be included, but reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says it will not, as Apple believes it would not offer a "good user experience." Kuo also believes availability of the 6.1-inch LCD model could be slightly delayed due to technical challenges.

Bloomberg also laid out its expectations for the new iPhones, essentially recapping what we've already heard, but noting that Apple has found itself in a naming conundrum regarding the new iPhones. Apple has reportedly considered going with an "S" generation name like "iPhone Xs" and dropping the "Plus" moniker for the largest model, but Apple's final decision on naming remains unknown.

Apple Watch Series 4 Models Compatible With Existing Bands, No New iPad Mini This Year
default.jpg Rumors have indicated that the Apple Watch models will gain slightly larger displays this year thanks to smaller bezels, but overall device sizes should remain similar. And importantly, Bloomberg says existing Apple Watch bands will continue to fit the new models.

Bloomberg also says Apple is not planning to release a new iPad mini this year, news that will disappoint many fans of Apple's smallest tablet. Aside from some storage and pricing tweaks, the iPad mini hasn't been updated since September 2015 and its popularity has dwindled with the rise of larger phones that narrow the size gap.

Alleged Leaked Image of Case for Redesigned iPad Pro Shows Mysterious Rear Cutout Above Lightning Connector
default.jpg We're expecting updated iPad Pro models either next month alongside new iPhones or perhaps at a separate October event, and a new leak of a third-party case allegedly designed to fit the upcoming models has raised some interest. The case includes a mysterious pill-shaped cutout on the rear of the device just above the Lightning port. Rumors and speculation have suggested it could be a Smart Connector of some sort, but the location doesn't really make sense and a similar feature was seen in leaks leading up to the iPhone 7 Plus release in 2016 but proved to be unfounded.

Apple Releases Firmware Update for AirPort Express With AirPlay 2 Support
default.jpg Apple this week released a firmware update for its discontinued second-generation 802.11n AirPort Express, adding AirPlay 2 support. With AirPlay 2, the AirPort Express can be hooked up to speakers and integrated with other speakers such as HomePod, Sonos, and more for synchronized multi-room audio. There had been speculation that AirPlay 2 might be coming to the AirPort Express, as the devices began showing up in the iOS 12 Home app during the beta period, but they could not be properly configured at the time.

Apple Says Latest macOS Supplemental Update Addresses Audio and Kernel Panic Issues on 2018 MacBook Pro
default.jpg Apple this week released a new macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update specifically for the new 2018 MacBook Pro, the second such update since the machine's launch last month. Apple confirmed to MacRumors that the update should help address issues related to crackling audio and system crashes due to kernel panics, both of which had been reported by a number of users.

Early feedback on the update has been mixed, with some users reporting they have still experienced some crackling or crashes, but others say things are much improved.

New MacBook Air, Mac Mini, and Apple Watches Incoming, Back to My Mac Gets the Axe, Moto Copies Apple - MacRumors

logo.png
We've been hearing for quite some time that Apple is working on a new low-cost notebook, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman this week shared a few more details on the device. He suggests the new notebook will be a revamped MacBook Air that looks similar to the current version but with a Retina display at the same 13-inch size and slimmer bezels. We still don't know what else will change in the update or how Apple will differentiate the MacBook Air, MacBook and low-end MacBook Pro models once they all have Retina displays.

The other big news from this week's report is that there's a new Mac mini in the works. The updated Mac mini, its first upgrade in four years, will reportedly have some pro-focused features like new storage and processor options that will likely drive up the current starting price of $499.

The new Macs could launch at a separate October event following the iPhone debut in September. A separate report claimed the new MacBook Air could arrive alongside the rumored updated iPad Pro (and presumably the new iPhones) in September, but it's starting to sound like there are enough announcements to break things up into two events.

Apple Watch Series 4 Models Filed in Eurasian Database Ahead of September Launch
default.jpg We've been expecting new Apple Watch Series 4 models to appear alongside the 2018 iPhone lineup next month, and Apple has all but confirmed it by filing regulatory documentation on four new Apple Watch models with the Eurasian Economic Commission. Such filings have routinely appeared several weeks prior to product launches over the past couple of years.

In another sign of imminent Apple Watch updates, Apple this week entirely removed 14 different band options from its online store, while others are listed as sold out. Despite rumored changes such as larger displays, we're expecting the new Apple Watch models to be compatible with existing bands, although Apple will undoubtedly update its band color options alongside the new watches.

2018 iPhone Pre-orders to Take Place on September 14 According to German Carriers
default.jpg Several German carriers are apparently reporting that they expect iPhone pre-orders to begin on Friday, September 14, which would suggest a media event earlier that week, perhaps on Wednesday, September 12. The new iPhones would then become available the following Friday, September 21.

As for the phones themselves, a new rumor claims that at least one of the new models will feature faster and more efficient wireless charging by changing the material used in the charging coil. Current-generation iPhones are limited to 7.5-watt wireless charging that isn't much faster than the default 5-watt wired method, so improvements in wireless charging would be welcome, provided they can be accomplished without generating too much heat.

Apple Pay Now Accepted at All Costco Warehouses in United States

Things will be a bit slower to roll out at Costco's gas pumps, but the company is installing readers there so eventually Apple Pay will be supported.

While Costco is the latest major retail chain to add support for Apple Pay, Walmart continues its holdout and says it has "no plans" to offer Apple Pay. Walmart has instead been pushing its own QR code-based Walmart Pay service available through its iOS and Android apps.

Apple Removes Group FaceTime From iOS 12 and macOS Mojave, Says It'll Launch Later This Year
default.jpg Apple on Monday issued seventh betas of iOS 12 and macOS Mojave to developers, noting that Group FaceTime, one of the highly touted features for the new updates, has been removed from the initial releases and will launch in separate updates later this fall.

That wasn't the only issue to gripe about, however, as a number of users began experiencing significant performance issues immediately after installing the new iOS 12 beta, with apps taking as much as 5–10 seconds to launch. Apple quickly pulled the beta and issued a new one on Wednesday to address the problems.

Inside the iPhone Repair Ecosystem: Where Do Replacement Parts Come From and Can You Trust Them?
default.jpg Say you dropped your phone and broke the display – where do you go to get it fixed? It's expensive to take it to Apple or an authorized service provider, and even with many authorized service providers you can be without your phone for several days while it's sent out for repair. That makes cheap repair shops an appealing option, but where do they get their parts from? We took a look at the aftermarket parts ecosystem to get an idea of how these parts are made, how good they are, and the pros and cons of going with an Apple-approved repair process.

Kuo: Apple to Launch Apple Car in 2023 to 2025
default.jpg Notable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week released a new report outlining how he believes Apple will get to its "next trillion" in market capitalization. According to Kuo, Apple will continue to focus on its rapidly growing services segment as it continues work on its next major hardware projects, which he predicts will be augmented reality glasses in 2020 and a car in the 2023–2025 timeframe.

Kuo's car claims are interesting given many reports that Apple has backed away from building a car product and instead plans to focus on the software side of things. There have, however, been some recent signs that Apple's interest in the hardware side may be picking up again.

'Industry Insiders' Believe AirPower Will Cost Around $149 and Work With All Three 2018 iPhones
default.jpg It's been almost a year since Apple showed off its AirPower mat that will let you wirelessly charge your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods simultaneously, but for whatever reason the accessory has yet to launch. At this point, it makes sense to simply launch AirPower alongside new iPhone and Apple Watch models next month, and a new report claims AirPower should be priced at around $149 and support all three of the new iPhones.

AirPower support for AirPods will also require a new AirPods case capable of wireless charging, which Apple promised would be sold separately. We're also expecting some updates to the AirPods earbuds themselves, but regardless of how the upgrades arrive, another report claims they will support not just AirPower but any Qi-certified wireless charger.

iPad Pro and iPhone Rumors, Tim Cook Talks Music, macOS Tips - MacRumors

We've been hearing for some time that the next iPad Pro models will resemble the iPhone X in some ways, most prominently with the adoption of a nearly full-front display and the removal of the Home button.

A newly discovered image asset in the latest iOS 12 betas suggests the iPad Pro displays could also offer the same rounded corners as seen on the iPhone X. Evidence so far has suggested the iPad Pro won't gain a display notch like the iPhone X, but rounded corners will help the display feel like it's truly filling the front of the device as much as possible.

In other iPad news, Apple's tablet is putting pressure on the rest of the market, with the company's market share ticking up as overall tablet sales dip. Apple dominated the early tablet market but slid as low-cost Android alternatives quickly followed. Apple has, however, regained some share over the past couple of years on the strength of new low-cost iPad options, the iPad Pro, and waning consumer interest in many subpar alternative products.

Apple CEO Tim Cook on Apple Music: 'We Worry About the Humanity Being Drained Out of Music'
Brief comments from Tim Cook were included in a new profile of Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, and while Cook didn't mention Spotify or Ek by name, he did express some thoughts on the role music plays in his life and how Apple has focused on human-driven curation.

"We worry about the humanity being drained out of music," Cook said, alluding to Spotify's algorithmic approach to music curation.

Cook also issued a memo to Apple employees late last week, addressing the company's historic milestone of reaching a $1 trillion market capitalization. In the memo, Cook acknowledged the significance of the event but stressed that it's "not the most important measure of success." Cook thanked his team, customers, suppliers, and others while noting "financial returns are simply the result of Apple's innovation, putting our products and customers first, and always staying true to our values."

Dual-SIM Dual Standby Feature May Be Limited to Version of 6.1-Inch iPhone Available Only in China
Rumors have indicated at least some models of this year's iPhone may support dual SIMs to make it easier for users to connect to multiple cellular networks, but a new report suggests the feature may only be available on the 6.1-inch LCD model and only in China where the feature is more popular.

Just as Apple is gearing up for the new iPhones, its main chip supplier TSMC was hit by a "debilitating" computer virus that took many of its tooling machines down for several days. The company's machines were apparently hit by a variant of the WannaCry ransomware, but it looks like it won't affect TSMC's ability to supply chips for the new phones.

Some 2018 MacBook Pro Owners Experiencing Crackling Speakers
It's not clear just how widespread this is, but several owners of the new 2018 MacBook Pro are reporting issues with crackling speakers. There have been sporadic reports of the issue on earlier models, but it seems to be getting additional attention with the new models. As always, if you're experiencing a problem, make sure to contact Apple support.

With the release of the 2018 models, the MacBook Pro also gained a new accessory option in the form of a leather sleeve. We went hands-on with the new sleeve, which is high-quality and comes in three color options. It's a bit pricey at $179 for the 13-inch version and $199 for the 15-inch version, however, and it doesn't allow you to charge your MacBook Pro without removing it from the sleeve.

Google Pixel 3 XL Production Unit Leak Reveals Taller iPhone X-Like Notch
Ever since the launch of the iPhone X, Android handset manufacturers have been rolling out their own models with similar notches in their displays to house the front camera and other components.

The latest is Google's Pixel 3 XL, which appeared this week in leaked photos. The Pixel's notch isn't as wide as the one on the iPhone X, but it's a lot taller, which just looks weird to us.

Google this week also released its new Android 9 Pie operating system version. Of course, most Android phones won't ever see Android Pie, as nearly a year after the launch of the previous Android 8 Oreo version only 12 percent of phones are running it, due largely to fragmentation in the Android ecosystem.
