Major macOS High Sierra Security Bug Fixed, iPhone X Demand, Jailbreaking Fading in Popularity  - MacRumors

feature.jpg
The internet exploded this week with news of a major macOS High Sierra vulnerability that could allow users with physical and in some cases remote access to a Mac to gain administrator access through the "root" superuser account without entering a password or any other security check.

Apple moved quickly to address the issue, releasing a patch in less than 24 hours and automatically pushing it to users' Macs, although the initial update for the fix also broke file sharing for some users. Apple shared instructions on how to fix that issue, and it appears the security update has been revised to prevent that problem from happening in the first place.

Timing — Automatic Time & Productivity Tracking for Mac
default.jpg

How much time did you spend on your Mac yesterday?

In today's fast-paced world, knowing where your time goes is more important than ever. But regular time tracking with start/stop timers is slow and cumbersome.

Timing fixes that by automatically tracking which apps, documents and websites you use on your Mac. Later, you see exactly how much time you worked, what you worked on, and how much you procrastinated. Timing can even automatically ask what you did when you were away or suggest missing time, so you'll never forget to enter a meeting.

Timing will help you get more productive by staying on top of your time. And if you need to know how much you worked on a specific project or task, e.g. for billing your hours — Timing makes that easy, too.

Improved iPhone X Shipping Estimates Due to Better-Than-Expected Production, Not Weak Demand
default.jpg Availability of the iPhone X continues to improve with Apple's retail stores seeing much better supplies in recent days, and according to noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that's due to better-than-expected improvements in production yields rather than any weakness in demand.

With supplies improving, Apple is ramping up advertising for the iPhone X, releasing a series of new ads this week focusing on features like Face ID and Animoji. Face ID and the TrueDepth camera system that enables it continue to be controversial, however, with one security company again going to great lengths to defeat Face ID with a mask and privacy advocates and developers again raising concern over whether users are given enough warning when third-party apps are collecting 3D face maps.

Two Major Cydia Repositories Shut Down as Jailbreaking Fades in Popularity
default.jpg Jailbreaking, once a relatively popular method of customizing iOS outside of Apple's "walled garden," has faded in popularity in recent years as Apple has brought many of the tweaks and features desired by users to the official operating system. With the decline in popularity, the developers behind jailbreaking tools and other resources have been putting less effort into maintaining them, and just in the past couple of weeks two of the major repositories for these jailbreak tweaks have shut down.

Hundreds of iPhone Users Complain About the Word 'It' Autocorrecting to 'I.T' on iOS 11 and Later
default.jpg Following the previous high-profile autocorrect bug that saw the letter "I" being replaced with "A[?]" for many users, we've been seeing a number of reports about a similar bug that autocorrects "it" to "I.T".

Apple has been quiet about this one, and there have been a few reports suggesting it might be fixed in the latest iOS 11.2 beta, but Apple has not yet pushed out a public fix for the problem.

Apple TV 4K With 64GB Storage Faces 4-5 Week Shipping Delay
default.jpg The Apple TV 4K was just released a couple of months ago, but after seeing solid availability for most of that time, the 64 GB model is oddly showing extended shipping estimates of 4-5 weeks and very little stock in Apple's retail stores.

The reason for the shortages isn't known, as we're obviously not expecting an update of any kind so soon after launch, but if you're looking to get one as a holiday gift, you might be out of luck unless you're willing to go with the 32 GB model.

Apple Says HomePod is Delayed Until Early 2018
default.jpg Unveiled at WWDC in June, Apple's HomePod smart speaker was supposed to launch in December, but the company announced late last week that it is delaying the launch until "early 2018," saying "we need a little more time before it's ready for our customers."

The exact reasons for the delay are unknown, but Bloomberg took a look at the history of the HomePod's development, outlining how the speaker project was canceled and revived several times over the past five years and how Apple was "blindsided" by the Amazon Echo when it debuted in 2014. Apple's intent has been to position the HomePod as a high-quality speaker with Siri serving primarily as the control interface for it, while the Echo's core functionality is its much more expansive Alexa voice assistant capabilities.

Apple Extends Free Repairs of Anti-Reflective Coating on Select MacBook and MacBook Pro Models
default.jpg For the past two years, Apple has offered an internal repair program for MacBook and MacBook Pro owners whose machines have seen the anti-reflective coating on their displays wearing off. The program, which came about following an expansive "Staingate" social media campaign from affected users, has recently been updated to end coverage for the oldest models, extend coverage for some others, and add coverage for the most recent models that are running out of their standard warranty periods.

iMac Pro Appears to Include A10 Fusion Chip for Always-On 'Hey Siri'
default.jpgBased on examination of some of Apple's operating system code, it appears that the upcoming iMac Pro will include a full A10 Fusion chip running alongside Intel Xeon processors. The move builds upon the inclusion of a ARM-based "T1" chip in the MacBook Pro to drive the Touch Bar and Touch ID, and it appears the A10 in the iMac Pro will handle even more security and boot-related functions. In addition, it looks like it will handle "Hey Siri" functionality that could potentially be active even when the iMac Pro is turned off.

Additional digging has revealed the possibility of always-on mobile connectivity that could provide a "Find My Mac" functionality for theft protection, although it's difficult to tell exactly what the code is referring to.

AirPods supplies have improved significantly in recent weeks, and Google recently launched its Pixel Buds intended to compete with the AirPods, but early reviews of the Pixel Buds have not been particularly favorable. We went hands-on with both sets of wireless earphones, so check out our video to see how they compare.

2018 iPhone and iPad Pro Rumors, iPhone X, Faster Wireless Charging in iOS 11.2 - MacRumors

logo.png
feature.jpg
We've suspected Apple might launch a larger "iPhone X Plus" model as part of its 2018 lineup, and oft-reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week released a new research report claiming we'll actually see three new iPhones next year, all with full-front displays and no home button.

According to Kuo, we'll have an iPhone X successor with a 5.8-inch OLED display as well as a larger 6.5-inch OLED model. What's surprising is that he says even the cheapest model will come with a full-front 6.1-inch LCD display, Face ID, and no home button. That sounds like quite the lineup.

Embracing the Notch: How Are You Adapting to the Most Controversial iPhone X Design Decision?
default.jpg The iPhone X has been out for almost two weeks, so users have had a chance to get used to the device's most controversial design aspect – the notch. We took a look at how it affects day-to-day usage, how apps are updating to handle it, and even how to hide it somewhat. In a separate video, we compared the iPhone X to Google's Pixel 2 XL, pitting a couple of flagship phones head to head.

In other iPhone X news, we've seen continued controversy over ways people have fooled the Face ID authentication, as well as a handful of users experiencing issues with green lines on the display and crackling sounds from the earpiece. Still, the device appears to be selling well and most users seem happy, while availability is continuing to improve with shipping estimates now down to 2-3 weeks and in-store availability also improving.

iOS 11.2 Supports Faster 7.5W Charging on iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X From Qi-Based Wireless Charging Accessories
default.jpg Apple is continuing to seed builds of iOS 11.2 for testing, and this week we discovered that it includes a promised upgrade to support 7.5-watt wireless charging on iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus. The company's new iPhones initially supported only 5-watt wireless charging, so the boost will help users recharge their phones more quickly, even if it won't match speeds seen with fast wired charging.

In addition to the faster wireless charging, the latest iPhone 11.2 beta also includes new explanatory text letting users know how the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth buttons in Control Center work. As of iOS 11, these buttons only disable certain functionalities temporarily rather than acting as full on/off toggles, and the change has confused some users.

Apple Developing Redesigned 2018 iPad With Face ID, Slimmer Bezels and No Home Button
It looks like Face ID is coming to the iPad Pro. According to a new Bloomberg report, a new iPad Pro likely coming next fall will adopt some of the features from the iPhone X, including a TrueDepth camera system with Face ID to replace the Touch ID home button. The new iPad Pro will have a display similar in size to the current 10.5" model, but with thinner bezels and thus a smaller overall body. One thing the iPad Pro won't be getting from the iPhone X is an OLED display, however, as supply and cost constraints will keep the iPad Pro using LCD technology for the time being.

But there's much more to come, it appears, as Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on an AR headset running a new "rOS" operating system that could debut by 2020.
