iPhone's 10th Birthday, iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra Public Betas, iPhone 8 Rumors, iMac Pro Tidbits - MacRumors

Today marks exactly ten years since the launch of the original iPhone, which took place on Friday, June 29, 2007. A lot has changed over the past ten years, but in some ways much remains the same. Take a look back at the launch of the original iPhone, how it evolved over the years, and what's next for the iconic device.

Key figures in the development and launch of the iPhone have been sharing their recollections over the past couple of weeks, with Scott Forstall and others discussing their work on the touchscreen and Tony Fadell talking about the early partnership with Motorola for the Rokr phone and the "disaster" that was the early iPhone business model. We also heard from the four reviewers hand selected by Steve Jobs to spend time with the iPhone before its launch.

Make sure to check out our how-to on installing the iOS 11 public beta if you're interested in participating in the program, and as always, it's a good idea to hold off on installing these betas on your main devices as there can still be serious bugs at this stage of the development process.

New iPhone 8 Glimpse Combines Leaked Parts to Show Off What Device Might Look Like at Launch
We've still yet to see many actual parts from the upcoming "iPhone 8," but the quality of dummy mockups continues to improve. Over the past week we've seen a combination of a dummy with a printed wallpaper and a screen protector to get an idea of what the device might look like, as well as a video of another high-quality dummy supposedly based on a design straight from a factory making the new phone.

Other iPhone 8 tidbits include a new charging sound discovered in the latest iOS 11 beta that some are speculating could be related to a form of wireless charging, a rumor that the iPhone 8 will come with a more powerful 10-watt USB-C power adapter for faster charging, and continued claims of very tight supplies at launch. Supply chain indications are also supporting rumors of 3D sensing capabilities on both the front and back of the iPhone 8.

iMac Pro May Feature Intel's Server-Grade 'Purley' Processors, ARM Coprocessor
Apple's high-end iMac Pro isn't launching until December, but some digging into the macOS High Sierra betas has turned up some details on the computer. It looks like the iMac Pro will be taking advantage of very high-end server-grade processors from Intel's "Purley" family, and the machine will also include some sort of ARM coprocessor similar to that used in the MacBook Pro to handle the Touch Bar and Touch ID functionality. It's not entirely clear, however, what its function will be on the iMac Pro.

Apple Acquires German Eye Tracking Firm SensoMotoric Instruments
Apple has recently acquired SensoMotoric Instruments, a German firm focused on eye-tracking hardware and software. MacRumors dug up evidence of Apple's acquisition of SMI, which could ultimately be used to enhance Apple's efforts in virtual and augmented reality. SMI's Eye Tracking Glasses have been used in a variety of settings including in-car systems, clinical research, cognitive training, linguistics, neuroscience, physical training and biomechanics, and psychology, but it looks like any outside sales and partnerships the company had will be terminated as Apple brings the technology in-house.

OnePlus Mocks Removal of Headphone Jack in iPhone 7 While Copying its Design for New OnePlus 5
default.jpg Android phone manufacturer OnePlus this week debuted its new OnePlus 5 flagship device, taking the opportunity to mock Apple's removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. During the unveiling, a slide showed the OnePlus 5 lacking a headphone jack, with presenter Diego Heinz deadpanning "Who needs a headphone jack anyway?" before the headphone jack magically appeared on the slide as Heinz joked "Just kidding."

Headphone jack jokes aside, OnePlus raised some eyebrows with the design of the OnePlus 5, which looks quite similar to the iPhone 7 Plus with its black finish, curved edges, rounded antenna bands, and dual rear cameras.

Apple's 'Stopping Leakers - Keeping Confidential' Employee Seminar Leaks Online
default.jpg In an interesting twist, an internal Apple seminar for employees discussing topics of secrecy and leak prevention has itself been leaked. The presentation noted that leaks from within Apple now outnumber those from the supply chain, appealing to employees' sense of duty and pride to keep confidential information secret.

Tim Cook has noted several times in recent years that Apple has been "doubling down" on secrecy, but information on the company's product plans has on occasion continued to leak.

Hands-On With watchOS 4: Siri Watch Face, Apple Pay, Activity Improvements, New Workouts and More
default.jpg Apple Watch will be receiving some nice updates with the release of watchOS 4 later this year, and we've put together a video highlighting some of what's new in the initial developer beta. Apple has just released the second developer beta, which adds the new Toy Story watch face that includes a number of characters and animations that appear at random every time you glance at your watch.

Apple will not be releasing a public beta of watchOS 4, as there is no way for users to downgrade from the beta if they run into any problems, so if you're not a member of the developer program you'll have to wait until the fall to get it on your wrist.

iPhone 8 Parts Leak, Hands-on With 10.5" iPad Pro and iOS 11, Tim Cook and Scott Forstall News - MacRumors

logo.png
feature.jpg
The upcoming "iPhone 8" is back in the news in a big way this week, with the first alleged part leaks from the device surfacing. Photos show what are said to be the front glass, rear panel, and a protruding camera component from the iPhone 8, as well as glimpses of the rear panels for the more traditional "iPhone 7s" and "iPhone 7s Plus" models.

The CEO of one of Apple's iPhone manufacturing partners, Wistron, perhaps unwisely disclosed this week that the iPhone 7s Plus (and presumably the iPhone 8 and 7s) will include wireless charging and improved water resistance, as has been previously rumored.

In other iPhone 8 news, one of Apple's camera lens suppliers, Largan Precision, has announced it will begin shipping 3D sensing modules in the second half of the year, likely destined for the iPhone 8. Mass production of other components for the new iPhones is said to be underway.

Apple has already released a couple of short ads for the new iPad Pro in the style of other recent ads based around Tweets, highlighting the Apple Pencil support and performance of the latest models. iFixit has also performed one of its traditional teardowns on the new 10.5-inch model, finding it to be more like a scaled-down version of the 12.9-inch model rather than a slightly scaled-up version of the previous 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

Here's How Apple's New MacBook Pro Compares to Last Year's Model
default.jpg Apple's new MacBook Pro arrives just eight months after the line's major redesign, but that doesn't mean there aren't some nice improvements. A shift to faster Kaby Lake processors with better integrated graphics from Intel, improved discrete graphics options from AMD, and a $200 price drop at the low end of the 13-inch range if you can do without the Touch Bar are all included.

The updated iMac is also available, and teardowns have revealed that the 4K 21.5-inch model has removable RAM and a non-soldered processor, although the parts are not officially considered replaceable for users. The new low-end 27-inch model is also capable of accepting up to 64 GB of RAM like the higher-end models, even though Apple doesn't offer it as an option on the low-end model.
