iPhone 8 to Use Lightning or USB-C?, Tim Cook on the 'Pro' Market, iPad Pro Rumors - MacRumors

iPhone 8 rumors took a rather surprising turn this week when the generally reliable Wall Street Journal reported that the new iPhone will shift from Apple's proprietary Lightning connector to USB-C, a move which would have significant ramifications for users and Apple's existing product lines given the ubiquity of Lightning throughout Apple's devices and accessories.

The Wall Street Journal's claim was immediately called into question by Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis, who told MacRumors he expects the new iPhones to continue to feature Lightning ports but perhaps utilize a Lightning to USB-C adapter to help Apple satisfy European regulations regarding universal charging standards.

And perhaps the most prominent Apple analyst of all, Ming-Chi Kuo, has now weighed in with his own claims that all of this year's new iPhone models will indeed include Lightning ports although they may adopt enhanced USB Power Delivery specifications to support fast charging.

Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'You Will See Us Do More in the Pro Area'
Apple held its annual shareholders meeting this week, and during the Q&A section Tim Cook sought to reassure investors that Apple remains committed to the professional market.

"You will see us do more in the pro area," Cook said. "The pro area is very important to us. The creative area is very important to us in particular."

Apple has come under particularly significant criticism for a lack of updates to its Mac Pro lineup, which is now over three years old, fostering speculation over shifts away from the pro market that has supported Apple for many years.

Apple Extended its MacBook Pro Anti-Reflective Coating Repair Program
Back in 2015, Apple responded to a groundswell of "Staingate" complaints regarding the anti-reflective coating wearing off of MacBook Pro displays by launching a free repair program to assist affected customers. The program was originally set to expire in October 2016 for those whose machines were more than three years old, but MacRumors recently learned that Apple has extended that deadline by one year to October 16, 2017.

In other repair news, Apple has informed its service provider partners that third-party replacement of an iPhone's display no longer automatically voids the warranty on the entire device. Apple had previously required that display replacements be done by authorized Apple service providers to maintain warranty coverage. Apple will still decline warranty coverage for issues related to or caused by third-party display repairs, but as long as any problems you experience are unrelated to the display, you should be fine.

10.5-Inch iPad Pro Said to Have 2,224×1,668 Display With Same Pixel Density as 9.7-Inch Model
A new 10.5-inch iPad Pro with smaller bezels making it the physical size of a current 9.7-inch model has been rumored for some time, but now we're hearing a few more details about that new display. According to IHS, the new iPad Pro model will carry a 2,224x1,668 display, matching the pixel density and 4:3 aspect ratio of the current iPad Pro models.

Separately, rumors continue to circulate about the timing of Apple's iPad updates. A previous report had indicated that while the full iPad lineup would be introduced at a March media event, the new 10.5-inch model might not be available until May, and now a new rumor claims both the 10.5-inch model and the updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be launching in the May–June timeframe.

Target Returns iPhone SE Stock Ahead of Apple's Rumored March Event
Ahead of a rumored March event where Apple may introduce a new 128 GB version of the iPhone SE, Target has begun pulling some iPhone SE models from its stores. It's unclear if the removal is linked to an imminent update, but it's definitely sparking speculation.

In other iPhone news, Apple says that the current iOS 10.2.1 update has reduced unexpected iPhone shutdowns by up to 80 percent in the iPhone 6s and 6. Following customer complaints about the shutdowns, Apple added diagnostic code in iOS 10.2 that it then used to help diagnose and address issues in iOS 10.2.1.

Finally, Apple is reportedly investigating a user's iPhone 7 Plus that was caught on video smoking and melting the phone's case. Given a lack of similar reports, it's almost certainly a rare issue that can affect any modern battery, but the situation is certainly gaining attention with all of the publicity about Samsung's Note7 battery problems and recall.
