10.5-Inch iPad Pro Entering Limited Production, But Spring, WWDC, or Fall Launch Remains Unclear
The only new iPad introduced last week was a low-cost 9.7-inch model known as simply as "iPad," but we've been expecting several other models including a new 10.5-inch iPad Pro model. Supply chain sources are indicating that the 10.5-inch model is indeed entering limited production, but it's unclear whether Apple is shooting for a spring launch or if it will hold off until WWDC in June or perhaps even until fall.

Several weeks ago, analytics firm Fiksu revealed it had seen evidence of four new iPads in its data, possibly pointing to Wi-Fi and cellular versions of two different iPads. The new low-cost iPad is not among those seen by Fiksu, however, which means there are indeed more new iPads still in the works.

Hands-On With Apple's New (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 7
The new iPad and red iPhone 7 became available for order last Friday, and we got our hands on the red iPhone 7 for a brief look at the brand-new color option. It's definitely eye-catching!

Apple fans are split on whether they like the white front of the red iPhone 7 or would have preferred a black front, and courtesy of YouTuber Danny Winget we can see what a black-fronted red iPhone would have looked like. He performed a transplant to move the front panel, logic board, and Touch ID home button from a Jet Black iPhone 7 to a new red model, yielding a fully functional iPhone in the unique color scheme.

Analyst Suggests Third-Generation Apple Watch Will Include Cellular Connectivity
Some sources have suggested Apple could be looking to introduce its next-generation Apple Watch in the fall alongside new iPhones, but details on what to expect in the new watch have been scant. One rumor has been cellular connectivity, and Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland believes the feature will indeed be making an appearance in the next Apple Watch.

Impact on battery life and space considerations have of course been concerns as Apple has explored adding cellular support to the Apple Watch, but if they're able to add the feature it could make the watch much more independent from its paired iPhone.

Samsung Unveils Galaxy S8 and S8+ With Iris and Facial Recognition, No Home Button
We've heard a lot of rumors about the iPhone 8 including removal of the home button, an edge-to-edge OLED display, and perhaps some sort of facial recognition technology, but Samsung has just announced its Galaxy S8 phone with many of the same features several months ahead of Apple. It's an interesting glimpse of what we might be able to expect in the iPhone 8, and of course it's always interesting to see what Samsung is up to as the leading Android handset manufacturer and Apple's rival.

New 9.7-Inch iPad, Red iPhone 7, New Apple Watch Bands, 'Clips' iOS App - MacRumors

As our sources predicted last week, Apple this week announced several product updates, led by a new low-cost 9.7-inch iPad. Known simply as "iPad," the new tablet goes on sale this Friday starting at $329 for a 32 GB model, with prices increasing for a storage bump to 128 GB and/or support for cellular connectivity. Be sure to check out our comparison of how the new iPad stacks up against the current 9.7-inch iPad Pro and the previous iPad Air 2. If you don't need all of the features of the iPad Pro, this new iPad looks to be a great buy.

In other iPad news, Apple didn't update the iPad mini 4 but it did discontinue the low-end 32 GB models and slide the 128 GB models down to the previous 32 GB price points. It means the iPad mini is now available only with a substantial 128 GB of storage starting at $399. Apple also finally discontinued the iPad mini 2, which it had kept in the lineup for several years as an ultra low-cost option.

Apple made a number of other announcements this week, which we'll cover below, but you can also check out our recap post with links to all of our coverage and a video overview of everything Apple announced in under three minutes.

Apple's iPhone 8 Said to Feature 'Water Drop Design' in Homage to Original iPhone
Even with a number of product updates this week, the "iPhone 8" remains in the news. The latest rumor comes from Korean site ETNews, which claims the iPhone 8 will have a "water drop" design with a softly curved body that will be reminiscent of the original iPhone.

Meanwhile, Barclays analysts believe the iPhone 8 will launch in September alongside more conservative "iPhone 7s" models, but supplies are likely to be very constrained. Other sources have reported the device might not launch at all until possibly as late as November given manufacturing challenges.

Apple Responds to Hack Threats, Says There Were No iCloud or Apple ID Breaches
Earlier this week, a group of hackers claimed to have access to hundreds of millions of iCloud accounts, threatening to wipe their owners' iPhones unless Apple met ransom demands of somewhere between $75,000 and $150,000.

While there is no proof that the hackers' claims are legitimate, Apple has responded, stating that there has been no breach of its iCloud or Apple ID systems. It's possible some accounts could have been compromised in breaches of other services where users reused login credentials, so it's always a good idea to make sure you have strong, unique passwords on all of your accounts.

New Apple Products Next Week?, iPhone 8 and Apple TV Rumors, iOS 10.3 Likely Coming Soon - MacRumors

There have been rumors of March updates for several products including iPads and iMacs for a number of months now, but we're already more than halfway through the month with no firm sign of any announcements.

We've heard from supply chain sources that Apple is planning to introduce its new products as soon as next week, but that would mean no media event as invitations would have already gone out. Signs of upcoming iPads have surfaced in analytics logs, and some analysts are predicting an imminent iPad announcement could include only an updated 9.7-inch "iPad Pro 2" while Apple waits a bit longer for the rest of its updates.

A separate rumor claims, however, that Apple is planning an early April event where it could introduce its anticipated 10.5-inch iPad Pro model, so uncertainty remains over just what Apple's plans are over the next few weeks.

5.8-Inch iPhone Affirmed to Have Mostly Flat Display With Slightly Curved Edges
For months, rumors have been going back and forth over whether this year's OLED "iPhone 8" will or will not have a curved display, and recent rumors have continued that trend.

Late last week, one analyst claimed the iPhone's display will be flat, "analogous to the current 2.5D glass design." Just a few days later, however, Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asian Review claimed the display will be curved, although the curve will be "gentler" than seen on Samsung's Galaxy Edge devices.

In speaking with our sources, we've learned that the two claims may actually be differing descriptions of the same design. Sources seem to agree that the iPhone 8 will use 2.5D glass as on the current models, featuring a flat piece of glass but with rounded edges, rather than actually bending the glass into a 3D shape. The display underneath that glass is likely to be almost entirely flat, although an edge-to-edge design could allow very slight curvature at the edges of the display to match the rounded 2.5D glass.

While the debate over just what the next iPhone will look like continues, be sure to check out our latest roundup of design concepts and mockups. Many of them aren't entirely realistic, but certain ideas and aspects are worth considering.

First Evidence of Fifth-Generation Apple TV and tvOS 11 Possibly Spotted in Developer Logs
There have been rumors that Apple is working on an updated Apple TV with support for 4K content, and one developer may have seen the first public signs of this box in their app logs.

Firi Games, the developer behind arcade game Phoenix HD, claims to have spotted a device identifying itself as "AppleTV6,2" and running tvOS 11 loading the app from an Apple-owned IP address. The current Apple TV has a model identifier of AppleTV5,3.

Apple Seeds Seventh Beta of iOS 10.3 to Developers and Public Beta Testers
It looks like we might be getting close to a public release for iOS 10.3, macOS Sierra 10.12.4, watchOS 3.2, and tvOS 10.2, as new betas are appearing with increasing frequency.

Apple provided sixth betas of all four updates earlier this week, and just yesterday the company seeded seventh betas of iOS 10.3 and macOS 10.12.4 to developers and public beta testers. The short interval likely means Apple is putting the final touches on these updates.

AirPods and Apple Watch Called 'Underpriced' to Bring New Users Into Apple Ecosystem
Above Avalon analyst Neil Cybart this week made the argument that Apple products like the AirPods and Apple Watch are actually "underpriced," flying in the face of the long-standing belief that Apple charges a premium for its products.

Cybart laid out his list of wireless earphone competitors to Apple's AIrPods, nearly all of which cost substantially more than the $159 Apple charges. The Apple Watch Series 1 starting at $269 and even the Series 2 starting at $329 are also priced favorably compared to many other smartwatches. Apple's pricing position suggests the company is seeking to dominate not just the premium market for these product categories, but the entire market, and its expertise in manufacturing at scale has allowed it to keep prices down.

'iPhone Edition' Coming Later Than Expected?, First macOS 10.13 Signs, Steve Jobs and the 'Idiotic' Genius Bar Idea - MacRumors

Rumors about this year's "iPhone 8" continue to surface, but rather than clarifying expectations they seem to be raising more questions than answers. There have been a few rumblings in recent weeks that the rumored OLED model could launch up to several months after the more traditional LCD-based "iPhone 7s" models, and now the frequently reliable Japanese site Mac Otakara is offering similar information and referring to the OLED model as an "iPhone Edition."

In other iPhone 8 news, rumors continue to coalesce around a ~5.8-inch display that includes a main display in the range of 5–5.2 inches and then a function area of some sort below that to replace the traditional home button. A redesigned Touch ID system and possibly face detection functionality would also be included.

Mac Users: 'Setapp Has Apps You Didn’t Know You Needed.'
Setapp, the only subscription for Mac apps, has reached its very first milestone: the end of free trial for the first influx of users. To get a better idea of how early bird subscribers use Setapp, the team interviewed some of them.

“It’s super convenient to have the right app at the right time without having to manage a few dozen passwords and payments,” said Paul Martens, entrepreneur. And according to QA tester David Cuthbertson, “there are many apps that you know you'll use and even more that you didn't realize you'll find a use for!”

Some users shared their workflows, as did studio artist Jeremy Bolesky: “I was able to use Expressions to write an online tool for generating HTML signatures for a client, Squash to optimize a folder of jpegs for a website, Paste to save time when copying hundreds of lines of text from an email into a table, and RapidWeaver to quickly create a landing page for a site.”

With 60+ apps for any task, Setapp can improve your workflow, too — and at only $9.99 per month, signing up is “a no-brainer decision.” Take advantage of the free month and decide for yourself.

Apple Reveals First Public Sign of macOS 10.13
We're expecting Apple to unveil the successor to macOS Sierra at WWDC in June, and while we don't yet know what the operating system's marketing name will be, its version number will be macOS 10.13. We've been seeing web traffic from machines running macOS 10.13 for months as Apple has been working on internal builds of the operating system, but we're now seeing the first public signs of Apple flipping the switches in preparation of seeding builds to developers for testing. Specifically, a "CatalogURL" file for macOS 10.13 has been published that once activated will allow users to set the Software Update functionality of their Mac App Store apps to receive builds of macOS 10.13 when Apple begins seeding them at WWDC.

Steve Jobs Thought Genius Bar Was 'Idiotic' Idea at First, Said 'It'll Never Work'
In a recent podcast appearance, former Apple retail chief Ron Johnson revealed an interesting tidbit, noting that Steve Jobs initially thought Johnson's idea for the now-iconic Genius Bar was "idiotic." Jobs believed the Genius Bar would "never work" because he believed "geeks" with sufficient expertise lacked the ability to "connect with people." Johnson pushed back by noting that the younger generation had all grown up "in a very different world" and that "they all know technology." Jobs' mind was changed, and the rest is history.

The Genius Bar is also in the news this week as we've learned Apple has discontinued its long-standing Genius training program that had sent new Geniuses to Cupertino, Austin, or Atlanta for multiple weeks of intensive hands-on experience, replacing it with web-based seminars and "virtual take aparts."

Apple Shares Two New iPad Pro Ads in Twitter-Based Campaign
Apple is continuing its recent string of short iPad Pro ads based around Tweets from random users about problems getting their work done due to computer troubles or other issues. All of the ads show how the iPad Pro can help in those situations, focusing on specific features of the popular tablet.

The ad campaign comes as Apple is rumored to be updating its iPad lineup as soon as this month. We've yet to hear word about an Apple media event to introduce the new products, although there was a brief flurry of unwarranted speculation earlier this week around a possible April 4 date.

Apple Watch's Record-Breaking Quarter Was Opposite One of Fitbit's 'Largest Declines Ever'
Apple already announced that the Apple Watch had its best sales ever during the holiday quarter, and new data suggests Fitbit simultaneously experienced one its "largest declines ever." The shift suggests Apple may be having success positioning the Apple Watch as a fitness device rather than a fashion accessory as it did in the watch's early days.

We're not expecting any significant updates to the Apple Watch hardware until this fall at the earliest, although we could soon see a refreshed set of band options to help sustain customer interest.
