Rather than the current Apple TV set-top box that starts at $149, a dongle would plug directly into the back of a television set. It's a refrain we hear every year, but investors already nervous from Apple's announcement that it will no longer report unit sales in its quarterly earnings reports have run for the exits, and Apple's stock price has dropped over 20 percent so far this month. Reports also indicate Apple may be working to reduce the price of the iPhone XR in Japan via carrier subsidies.   Read Full Article Discontinued AirPort Extreme and 2TB Time Capsule Finally Disappear From Apple Online Store Apple announced earlier this year that it was discontinuing its AirPort lineup of wireless routers, although it would continue to sell the routers while supplies lasted. The run appears to have finally come to an end this week, with Apple removing the AirPort Extreme and 2TB AirPort Time Capsule from its online store. Hands-On With New Mac mini and MacBook Air, Apple Repair Programs, New MacBook Pro Graphics Options - MacRumors

Hands-On With Apple's New 2018 Mac Mini Last week was a busy one with the launch of the new iPad Pro, MacBook Air, and Mac mini, and we've had a chance to go hands-on with the latest Mac mini, which now comes in Space Gray. There's a lot to like about the new Mac mini, with significantly better performance and port options, but the improvements don't necessarily come cheap, as the entry-level price has risen from $499 to $799. And if you want to max everything out, you'll pay over $4,000. iFixit naturally took the new Mac mini apart, finding that only the RAM is easily replaceable with most other major components soldered to the logic board. But at least it's fairly easy to get inside if you do need to replace something. And if you happen to be the proud owner of both a Mac mini and an iPad, you might want to consider the possibility of using the iPad as a display for the desktop computer, courtesy of the Luna Display wireless dongle.   Read Full Article Popular Stories Nov 15, 2018 Apple Launches iPhone X Display Module Replacement Program to Address Touch Issues Apple late last week announced a pair of repair programs to address issues with its products, led by an iPhone X display module replacement program. Users who are experiencing problems with their displays failing to respond to touch, responding intermittently, or reacting without being touched should contact Apple for free repairs. For owners of Apple's 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar, Apple has also launched a service program to address failures of 128 and 256 GB SSDs that can lead to data loss. Apple recommends that users whose serial numbers fall in the affected range have their machines serviced as soon as possible in order to avoid data loss.   Read Full Article Apple's New 2018 MacBook Air vs. Old MacBook Air We shared a couple of videos about the new MacBook Air this week, including an early hands-on look at the new notebook and a follow-up comparison to the previous-generation model. Compared to its predecessor, the new MacBook Air is smaller and slightly lighter and has new color options, and of course has a new Retina display that's much sharper. The new MacBook Air is $200 more than the previous generation, but it's well worth the extra money for all of the improvements. In other MacBook Air news, a curious Geekbench result from earlier this month suggests that Apple may have considered offering a faster 1.8 GHz Core i7 processor alongside the 1.6 GHz Core i5 found in the released machine. It's not clear why this faster option didn't make it into the released version, so we don't know if it was scrapped entirely or if there's a chance Apple could offer it as an upgrade option at some point in the future.   Read Full Article 15-Inch MacBook Pro AMD Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Options Now Available to Order Following its October 30 media event, Apple quietly announced in its MacBook Air press release that the MacBook Pro would also be gaining new AMD Radeon Pro Vega graphics options this month, and those options have just gone live. You now have the option of upgrading the high-end stock 15-inch MacBook Pro with either Radeon Pro Vega 16 graphics for $250 or Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics for $350. In addition to the new MacBook Pro graphics options, Apple this week also launched a new (PRODUCT)RED version of the Apple Watch Sport Loop as well as a tweaked version of the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock, although any differences in the dock appear limited to internal changes as the external look and specs have not changed.   Read Full Article Amazon Inks Deal to Sell New Apple Products Like iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and 2018 iPad Pro Amazon and Apple have struck a deal that will see Amazon selling a number of new Apple products through its online storefronts in multiple countries. Devices like the new iPad Pro, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, Apple Watch Series 4, and Beats headphones will be available on Amazon through Apple-authorized resellers. Not all Apple products will be appearing on Amazon, however, with the HomePod being one notable exception. Check out our roundup of media reviews, which generally found it to be an excellent upgrade that even pro users can take advantage of, although some upgrades like maxing out SSD storage can get very expensive. The new Mac mini comes in with very good benchmark scores, and while the machine uses removable RAM modules that could allow for future upgrades, it does require a fair amount of work and isn't considered a user-upgradeable component by Apple.   Read Full Article New AirPods Model Numbers Show Up in Bluetooth Database, Hinting at Upcoming Release We've been hearing for some time about an update to Apple's popular AirPods earphones, and this week saw more evidence in the form of a registration in the Bluetooth regulatory database. We're expecting to see new AirPods with "Hey Siri" support, but it's still up in the air whether the new models are going to get the rumored wireless charging alongside the company's troubled AirPower charging mat that was unveiled 14 months ago but has yet to see a release. There's no word on when these updated AirPods will launch, as Apple's September and October media events were perfect opportunities to unveil them but they failed to make an appearance. At this point, we would likely either see a press release launch in next month or have to wait until a potential early 2019 media event.   Read Full Article Apple Reports 4Q 2018 Results: $14.1B Profit on $62.9B Revenue, 46.9M iPhones Apple last week reported record-breaking September quarter earnings, buoyed by a strong year-over-year increase in average selling price of its iPhone lineup due to premium pricing on the iPhone X and its successors. That rising average selling price was related to another announcement Apple made on its earnings conference call, with Apple revealing it will stop reporting unit sales numbers for iPhone, iPad, and Mac starting this quarter. In an environment where Apple has been able to increase revenue and profits even in the face of declining or flat device sales, Apple believes unit sales are no longer an accurate indicator of Apple's business strength. The Mac mini now starts with a quad-core processor, but 6-core options are also available. It also supports up to 64 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of fast SSD storage. There's also an option to upgrade to 10 Gb Ethernet. The upgrades don't come cheap, with even the entry-level model checking in at $799. Drop tests also revealed that the iPhone XR rates just about as breakable as the iPhone XS, as both devices have all-glass front and back panels.   Read Full Article Apple Releases iOS 12.1 With eSIM Support, Real-Time Depth Control, Group FaceTime, New Emoji and More Following Tuesday's event, Apple released iOS 12.1 to the public, bringing support for dual SIMs, real-time depth control in Portrait mode, Group FaceTime for up to 32 people, and dozens of new emoji. The update also addresses several issues including user complaints of over-aggressive skin-smoothing in selfies and poor cellular performance in Apple's latest iPhones. Alongside iOS 12.1, Apple also released macOS 10.14.1, tvOS 12.1, and watchOS 5.1 with corresponding feature updates and bug fixes, although Apple was forced to quickly pull the watchOS 5.1 after numerous users reported the update process was bricking their watches.
