Pro Display XDR Hands-On, Tips for Your Holiday Apple Gifts, Apple's Secret Satellite Team – MacRumors

logo.png
Just a few days after going hands-on with the new Mac Pro, we took a look at Apple's new Pro Display XDR, a gorgeous 6K display that costs a whopping $4999. And if you want a stand for the display, that's an extra $999.

In our early testing, we appreciated the high brightness and excellent color accuracy, and it carries Apple's traditional clean design aesthetic with the rear of the display covered in the same lattice pattern seen on the new Mac Pro for ventilation.

As you might expect for $999, the stand is also beautiful and functional, attaching to the display with some incredibly strong magnets while offering great stability and the ability to smoothly shift to portrait orientation.

At $6000 for the display and stand, this obviously isn't a setup for mainstream users, but for video professionals who have traditionally used reference monitors costing tens of thousands of dollars, Apple's new display might actually be a bargain.

MacBook Pro Anti-Reflective Coating Repair Program Remains in Effect, But 2013-2014 Models No Longer Eligible
default.jpgFor over four years, Apple has offered a repair program to assist users whose MacBook Pro and MacBook models experienced issues with the anti-reflective display coatings wearing off over time.

The program has covered machines for four years from the date of first sale, but the company recently updated its internal documentation to note that 2014 and earlier MacBook Pro models are no longer eligible for covered repairs. While most such units are now past their four-year coverage periods anyway, there are undoubtedly some users who purchased these models on clearance and would otherwise have been covered for a bit longer.

Apple Investigating 16-Inch MacBook Pro Popping Sound Issue, Fix Planned in Future Software Updates
default.jpg Apple is investigating a popping sound issue with the new 16-inch MacBook Pro and plans to make a fix available in future software updates, the company has indicated in an internal document obtained by MacRumors.

"When using Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro X, QuickTime Player, Music, Movies, or other applications to play audio, users may hear a pop come from the speakers after playback has ended," explained Apple.

Some users have suggested the just-released macOS 10.15.2 update may resolve the issues, although not everyone agrees. Apple's bulletin did state that a fix would come in future software updates — plural.

iPhone SE 2 Might Actually Be Called the iPhone 9
default.jpgFor months, we've been hearing rumors about a so-called iPhone SE 2 with a similar form factor as the iPhone 8, including a 4.7-inch display and a Touch ID home button, but with a faster A13 chip and 3GB of RAM.

Now, a report has come out that suggests the iPhone SE 2 might be named the iPhone 9 after all, which would make more sense given those specs make it sound like more of an iPhone 8 successor than a new version of the iPhone SE.

The lower-cost iPhone, whatever it ends up being named, will likely start around $399 with 64GB of storage, and come in Space Gray, Silver, and Red, according to reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The device is expected to be released in the first quarter of 2020 — likely around March.

2020-21 iPhone Rumors, 13" MacBook Pro Shutdown Issue, Jony Ive Leaves Apple — MacRumors

logo.png
After a relatively slow Thanksgiving and Black Friday holiday week, iPhone rumors came in fast and furious this week.

The latest prediction comes from reputable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who expects Apple to release a so-called "iPhone SE 2 Plus" with a 4.7-inch to 5.5-inch display and a Touch ID power button — yes, the power button on the side — in the first half of 2021. The device would have a notch, but a smaller once since Face ID supposedly won't be an option.

Then, in the second half of 2021, Kuo expects Apple to release a top-of-the-line iPhone without a Lightning connector in the second half of 2021. The device is said to offer a "completely wireless experience," so it sounds like no port whatsoever rather than a switch to USB-C.

Five New iPhones Expected in 2020, Including One 5.4-Inch, One 6.7-Inch, and Two 6.1-Inch Models
default.jpg As part of his long list of predictions about upcoming iPhones, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo touched on the fall 2020 lineup, which he believes will include one 5.4-inch, one 6.7-inch, and two 6.1-inch models.

All four models are expected to have OLED displays and support 5G via Qualcomm, with sub-6G or mmWave compatibility varying by country.

Four new high-end iPhones in 2020 lines up with a recent prediction shared by JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee.

Earlier in 2020, Kuo expects Apple to release the widely rumored "iPhone SE 2" with a 4.7-inch LCD display and a traditional Touch ID home button. The device is expected to resemble the iPhone 8, but with a faster A13 chip and 3GB of RAM. Pricing is estimated to start at $399.

16-Inch MacBook Pro and 12.9-Inch iPad Pro With Mini-LED Displays to Launch in Second Half of 2020

In a separate report, the well-known analyst claimed that Apple plans to release updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Mini-LED displays in the second half of 2020.

Kuo has previously said that Mini-LED displays will allow for thinner and lighter product designs, while offering many of the same benefits of OLED displays used on the latest iPhones, including good wide color gamut performance, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming for truer blacks.

iPads and MacBooks currently use LCDs.

New iPhones Access Location Info Even When Settings Are Disabled Due to Ultra Wideband, Toggle Coming in Future Software Update
default.jpg Earlier this week, security researcher Brian Krebs found that Apple's new iPhone 11 Pro models access user location data even when all apps and system services on the iPhone are set to not request the data.

Apple has since responded, stating that this behavior is a result of the new U1 Ultra Wideband chip in the iPhone 11 models and not a privacy concern.

"Ultra wideband technology is an industry standard technology and is subject to international regulatory requirements that require it to be turned off in certain locations," said Apple in a statement. "iOS uses Location Services to help determine if ‌iPhone‌ is in these prohibited locations in order to disable ultra wideband and comply with regulations."
