MacBook Pro Throttling Fix, 6.1" iPhone Delay?, Steve Jobs on the App Store - MacRumors

logo.png
After nearly a week of controversy over severe processor throttling seen in Apple's brand-new MacBook Pro under heavy loads, Apple acknowledged that the issue was the result of a "missing digital key" and fixed the bug by releasing a macOS update for all 2018 MacBook Pro models. Following the initial high-profile report of the problem by YouTuber Dave Lee, Apple worked with Lee to replicate his workflows in order to identify and fix the bug.

Numerous subsequent tests confirm that Apple's macOS update does indeed fix the issue for the most part, with CPU frequency and temperature remaining much more stable under load.

Apple Seemingly Unable to Recover Data From 2018 MacBook Pro With Touch Bar When Logic Board Fails
default.jpg Beyond the throttling issue, there were a number of other MacBook Pro tidbits in the news this week, including the discovery that Apple is apparently unable to recover data from the SSDs on the new models if the logic board fails.

In the 2016 and 2017 models, there is a data recovery port on the logic board that enabled Apple technicians to migrate data to a new computer, but with the move to enhanced security via a T2 chip and the removal of this data port in the new models, that is no longer possible. Moral of the story: Back up your data!

Other MacBook Pro news this week included details on the new "Titan Ridge" Thunderbolt 3 chip and its capabilities for driving high-resolution displays, as well as  the ability to support full-speed data transfers on all four Thunderbolt 3 ports on the 13-inch MacBook Pro. And finally, iFixit did an interesting deep dive into the keyboard on the MacBook Pro, using a glowing paint additive to illustrate how the new silicone barrier helps keep dust and debris away from the key mechanism.

Apple's 6.1-Inch LCD iPhone 'Possibly' Delayed to October, OLED Models Still Coming in September
default.jpgAfter Apple pushed the launch of the iPhone X into early November last year, there has been uncertainty about whether all three of this year's models will launch simultaneously. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty has weighed in with her thoughts that the cheapest model using a 6.1-inch LCD could see a roughly four-week delay and launch in October. Apple is said to be facing issues with light leakage from the LED backlight, but the situation is reportedly improving from original estimates.

In other iPhone news, Qualcomm this week said that it expects Apple to "solely" use cellular modems from another company in this year's iPhones. That other company would be Intel, and rumors had been divided as to whether Intel would have complete control or if Apple would continue to split orders between Qualcomm and Intel. It sounds like it's going to be the former.

And finally, Apple has been rumored to be including an 18-watt USB-C charger with this year's iPhones to support fast charging out of the box. A word of warning to those planning to use third-party chargers though: a new rumor claims that only chargers with "C-AUTH" certification will be able to charge iPhones at full speed. Otherwise, Apple will limit charging speeds to 2.5 watts.

HomePod OS 12 Beta Software Said to Support Multiple Timers, New Phone Call Features, and More
default.jpg Unlike its other operating systems, Apple doesn't yet run a developer or public beta program for HomePod, but a new report suggests that Apple's smart speaker could still see some updates later this year alongside the company's other platforms.

The HomePod update said to be in internal testing reportedly includes support for multiple timers, new phone support including the ability to initiate calls and listen to voicemails, and the ability to easily switch Wi-Fi networks. Other new features are rumored to include the ability to use Find My iPhone via HomePod, as well as improvements to Siri's general knowledge capabilities on the HomePod in areas like food and nutrition.

Steve Jobs on the App Store in 2008: 'We Didn't Expect It to Be This Big'
default.jpg The Wall Street Journal this week published audio and a transcript of a 2008 interview with Steve Jobs one month after the launch of the App Store. The interview offers an interesting look into the early days of the app marketplace, with Jobs stressing that the App Store was exceeding all expectations and making it difficult to predict how big it could become. Jobs didn't expect the App Store to be a major profit generator for Apple, but hoped it could one day become a billion dollar business. In the ten years since its launch, the App Store has made over $100 billion for developers, not to mention Apple's cut of the revenue.

Samsung Mocks iPhone's Camera, Lack of Headphone Jack, and More in Latest Galaxy S9 Ads
default.jpg Following an initial ad touting the Galaxy S9's superior LTE speeds compared to the iPhone, Samsung has gone all-in on its "Ingenious" ad campaign mocking Apple. In one set of three ads released late last week, Samsung took on camera performance, the iPhone's lack of a headphone jack, and the need to purchase separate equipment for fast charging on the iPhone.

A new set of ads released today focuses on the iPhone X notch, the lack of a microSD card slot, and no support for split-screen multitasking on iPhone.

MacBook Pro Throttling and Keyboard Details, iPhone Part Leak, New MacBook Chips - MacRumors

Apple's new MacBook Pro is just getting into the hands of users, so we're learning a lot more about the machine. One significant controversy brewing relates to thermal throttling that's particularly noticeable with the high-end Core i9 processor option. Under heavy loads, computers will generally slow down their processors to prevent overheating, and while this certainly isn't unique to the MacBook Pro, early data suggests that throttling is more severe in the new models, hampering performance for tasks like video rendering.

In other MacBook Pro news, we're continuing to hear more about the new keyboard. While Apple has publicly said only that it's quieter than the previous generation, internal Apple documentation confirms that silicone membranes discovered under the keys are indeed intended to help keep dust and debris from interfering with the butterfly key mechanism. Unfortunately, these new keyboards will remain exclusive to the 2018 MacBook Pro models, and users with 2016 and 2017 models receiving keyboard repairs will not get the improved version.

There's lots of other information coming out about the MacBook Pro, so be sure to check out our MacBook Pro roundup for all of the latest details.

Front Glass Panels for 2018 iPhones Appear to Leak, Show Thicker Bezels on 6.1-Inch LCD Model
We're likely less than two months away from the announcement of Apple's new iPhones, and part leaks have been scant so far. That may have changed a bit this week with several photos showing what are said to be the front glass panels from all three iPhones. The side-by-side parts show that the bezel on the mid-sized 6.1-inch model will be slightly thicker than on the other two models, due to its use of an LCD display rather than an OLED one.

Corning has also just announced its new Gorilla Glass 6, the company's most durable glass to date. It's not confirmed that the 2018 iPhones will use the new generation of Gorilla Glass, but Corning says it's being evaluated "by multiple customers" and should start appearing in devices in the next few months.

Details on Upcoming Amber Lake Chips Appropriate for 2018 MacBook Leak
In addition to the new MacBook Pro, we're expecting several other Mac products to receive updates in the next few months, including the ultra-thin MacBook. Details on Intel's new "Amber Lake" chips appropriate for the MacBook have begun to leak, and they point toward some nice performance increases.

We're not exactly sure when to expect new MacBooks, as rumors have only pointed to sometime before the end of the year, so we could see them at the September iPhone event, a separate event perhaps in October, or simply via a press release at some other time like we saw with the MacBook Pro.

Apple Overhauls Leadership Page With Memoji Avatars for Execs Ahead of World Emoji Day
It was only a brief bit of fun, but Apple this week celebrated World Emoji Day by changing all of its executives' photos on the company's leadership page to Memoji avatars. Craig Federighi's hair and Jony Ive's wide eyes were particularly amusing, and overall it was a unique way to highlight a brand-new Apple feature.

Apple's other contribution to World Emoji Day was the release of examples showing some of the over 70 new emoji characters that will be coming to Apple's platforms later this year.  We've got new hair colors and styles, new animals and food, and more.

Hands-On With Apple's New $699 Blackmagic eGPU
Alongside the new MacBook Pro, Apple last week also introduced a new Thunderbolt 3 eGPU in partnership with Blackmagic Design. The eGPU includes a Radeon Pro 580 that lets you offload some GPU tasks from the computer's own graphics chips onto the more powerful one in the eGPU. We went hands-on with the Blackmagic eGPU for a brief look at the design and performance of the $699 peripheral. It gave a very nice boost to our 2016 MacBook Pro, but you won't want to use it with an iMac Pro, as that desktop machine already has a beefier Radeon Pro Vega 56 or 64 built in.

Samsung Ad Pokes Fun at Apple Genius Bar and Touts Faster Galaxy S9 LTE Speeds
Samsung is going after Apple again in a new ad, touting the Galaxy S9's faster LTE speeds compared to the latest iPhone models and making fun of Apple's Genius Bar support.

Apple dual sources the LTE modems in its latest iPhones, using a combination of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X16 and Intel's XMM7480, while the Galaxy S9 uses Qualcomm's faster Snapdragon X20 modem. Samsung's Galaxy S9 is of course newer than the iPhone 8 and X, and Apple is said to be introducing improved antenna technology for faster speeds in its next iPhones coming later this year.

New MacBook Pros Released, 2018 Product Roadmap, Back to School Promo - MacRumors

In a surprise move, Apple today updated its Touch Bar-equipped MacBook Pro models in both 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, bringing a host of improvements including Intel's latest quad-core (13") and 6-core (15") processors, up to 32 GB of RAM on the 15-inch model, a "quieter" third-generation butterfly keyboard design, and more.

Other improvements include up to 4 TB of storage in 15-inch models and 2 TB in 13-inch models, new True Tone support for the display and Touch Bar, and a new T2 chip that offers enhanced security and brings "Hey Siri" functionality to the Mac for the first time.

Maxing out a new MacBook Pro won't be cheap, however, as loading up a 15-inch model with 4 TB of storage, 32 GB of RAM, and all of the rest of the available upgrades will push the price to a whopping $6,699.

Alongside the new MacBook Pro, Apple also released new leather sleeves for both sizes, as well as a $699 external GPU developed in partnership with Blackmagic Design. Apple also finally stopped selling the low-end 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro (aside from some clearance stock), while no updates were made to the low-end 13-inch MacBook Pro without Touch Bar.

Mac Mini Refresh, New Low-Cost Notebook, Apple Watches With Larger Displays and More Coming This Fall
Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a new research note this week outlining his expectations for Apple's product roadmap through the end of the year. While much of it was a recap of previous rumors, perhaps the most anticipated tidbit was mention of a new Mac mini.

No details on what to expect in the new Mac mini beyond processor upgrades were shared, but it's been over three and a half years since it last saw an update, so expectations are very high. Other upcoming products included in Kuo's report were iPad Pros with Face ID, three new iPhones, processor-bumped MacBooks, iMacs with new processors and improved displays, a new low-cost notebook to replace the MacBook Air, and new Apple Watch models with larger displays.

With Kuo offering some specifics on the upcoming Apple Watch models including reported display sizes of 1.57 and 1.78 inches, some designers have mocked up what these new models might look like and visualized just how much extra display area users will have.

Apple Launches 2018 Back to School Promotion: Free Beats With Select Mac or iPad Pro Models
Apple today also launched its annual Back to School promotion in the United States and a number of other countries, offering education customers free Beats headphones with select Mac or iPad Pro models. And yes, the new MacBook Pro introduced today is eligible for the promotion.

If you purchase a new Mac (excluding Mac mini) through one of Apple's education channels, you'll receive your choice of free BeatsX, Solo3 Wireless, or Powerbeats3 wireless headphones. With the purchase of an iPad Pro, you'll receive free BeatsX or Powerbeats3, or you can pay a $100 charge to upgrade to the Solo3 Wireless.

Apple usually launches its Back to School programs in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico a few weeks ahead of many other countries in Europe and elsewhere, but this year they are all launching simultaneously with the exception of some countries primarily in the Asia–Pacific region where the promotion is offered earlier in the year to match their school calendars.

Apple Releases iOS 11.4.1 With Bug Fixes, USB Restricted Mode
This week saw the public release of iOS 11.4.1, which included a number of bug fixes as well as a new USB Restricted Mode that's designed to make your iOS device immune to certain hacking techniques by preventing data transmission over USB if your device hasn't been unlocked within the past hour.

Unfortunately, security researchers have already figured out a way around the restriction under certain circumstances, so we'll have to see how Apple addresses that loophole.

In addition to iOS 11.4.1, Apple also released macOS 10.13.6, watchOS 4.3.2tvOS 11.4.1, and HomePod software 11.4.1, all primarily focused on bug fixes, although the macOS update in conjunction with iTunes 12.8 brought support for AirPlay 2 multi-room audio.

Hands-On With the Siri Shortcuts Beta App in iOS 12
After taking some time at WWDC to show off its upcoming Shortcuts app born out of the Workflow app it acquired last year, Apple is now allowing developers to begin testing Shortcuts ahead of its public release alongside iOS 12 in the fall. We went hands-on with Shortcuts to offer just a brief look at some of the ways it can automate multi-step actions on iOS and invoke them using Siri. It's a very powerful app, so it'll be interesting to see what users do with it as third-party apps build out support on their end.

Former Apple Employee Charged With Theft of Trade Secrets Related to Autonomous Car Project
A former Apple employee involved in Apple's autonomous car project was charged with theft of trade secrets this week, offering a bit of insight into the project. The court documents reveal that roughly 5,000 employees have access to internal data on the project, with 2,700 "core employees" tied into more sensitive documents.

In something out of a spy novel, the employee was arrested as he passed through airport security on his way to China after he had resigned from Apple to take a job with XMotors, a Chinese company working on autonomous car technology. The employee admitted to downloading extensive data and taking hardware from Apple's labs while out on paternity leave earlier this year.

New Colors for 2018 iPhones, Apple Maps 'Ground Up' Rebuild, iPads With Face ID - MacRumors

iPhone rumors are really starting to heat up, and reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has just issued a new report claiming that we can expect some new colors in this year's lineup. According to Kuo, Apple should be adding gold into the mix with the second-generation iPhone X and larger "iPhone X Plus," which shouldn't be too much of a surprise considering Apple itself leaked that it planned a gold iPhone X but was unable to launch it, presumably due to manufacturing challenges with the gold color.

What's more interesting is that Kuo says the new "low-cost" 6.1-inch iPhone could have "five possible casing colors": gray, white, blue, red, and orange. It's certainly not unheard for Apple to launch an iPhone in that many colors, as the iPhone 7 lineup had as many as six different colors once the (PRODUCT)RED version debuted, but Kuo's list sounds a bit more like the iPhone 5c lineup, which brought an interesting splash of color to the iPhone.

In other iPhone rumors, we've seen a Geekbench result that could be from the A12 chip expected in the next iPhones, and at least some models are said to include dual-SIM support.

Apple Maps to Be Rebuilt 'From the Ground Up' With First-Party Data Over the Next Year
Apple late last week announced that it will be rebuilding Apple Maps "from the ground up" over the next year using its own street-level data collected by mapping vans and other sources over the past few years. The effort will move Apple away from third-party map sources like TomTom and allow for improvements and faster updates to reflect traffic, real-time road conditions, road systems, new construction, changes in pedestrian walkways, and more.

The first pieces of the updated maps are rolling out now to iOS 12 beta users, covering San Francisco. Coverage of the rest of Northern California will come by the fall, with the remainder of the United States following over the next year and international expansion also in the works.

New Evidence in iOS 12 of Apple's Upcoming iPad With Face ID
We're continuing to see rumors and evidence that Apple's upcoming iPad Pro models will include TrueDepth and Face ID camera technology, and developer Steven Troughton-Smith has dug up the latest piece of evidence in the form of an iPad-ready version of AvatarKit, the framework that supports TrueDepth-driven Animoji on the iPhone X.

Apple has just registered several new iPad and Mac models with regulators in Eurasia, providing further evidence that new models are incoming. These regulatory filings have historically been reliable indicators of imminent releases, although the last batch of filings covering new iPhone models back in April has not yet led to a product launch.

Apple's First MacBook Pro With Retina Display is Now 'Vintage'
Back in 2012, Apple made a splash when it debuted the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display, setting a new standard for thinness while maintaining power and functionality, along with that gorgeous display.

It's now 2018, however, and Apple has just declared that first MacBook Pro with Retina Display model "vintage" or "obsolete" depending on the region. That means that outside of a few areas like California and Turkey, Apple and its service providers are no longer obligated to provide hardware service or replacement parts for the machines.

Quite a few of the original 2012 models are still running strong, and many users consider the 2012–2015 MacBook Pro design the best notebook ever made, particularly considering the controversial redesign and keyboard problems seen with newer models.

Apple's Rumored 18W USB-C iPhone Power Adapter Prototype Shown Off in New Photos
We've been hearing for a while now that Apple may be planning to include an 18-watt USB-C charger in the box with the next iPhones, allowing for faster charging than with the 5-watt USB-A charger traditionally included with iPhones. The latest piece of evidence comes in the form of photos showing off an oblong adapter with markings rating it for 18 watts. It's certainly possible this device is a knockoff, but it's pretty consistent with circulating rumors so we'll continue to keep our eyes on things!

Apple Seeds Third Beta of iOS 12 to Developers
Apple has seeded developers with the third beta versions of all of its upcoming operating systems: iOS 12, macOS Mojave, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12. We're continuing to see tweaks, fixes, and refinements such as new iCloud photo sharing links as the beta period progresses ahead of a public release in the fall.

With all of the interest in these new operating system versions, it's easy to forget that Apple still has current versions in need of maintenance. Toward that end, this week saw new beta releases of iOS 10.4.1 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. We're not expecting any significant new features in these new releases, but even bug fixes and security updates are welcome changes for users.
