Apple Talks Mac Pro and iMac Roadmap, iPhone 8 and Mac mini Rumors, Clips iOS App - MacRumors

Over three years since the launch of the radically redesigned cylindrical Mac Pro, Apple has finally publicly addressed the future of the professional desktop workstation, effectively instituting a price cut on the existing models while revealing work on an all-new design is currently underway. The redesigned Mac Pro will be accompanied by a new Apple pro-level display, but they won't be ready this year and perhaps not until 2019.

Apple uncharacteristically invited a small group of journalists to Cupertino for a roundtable discussion where the company outlined its roadmap and apologized for missteps with the current Mac Pro design while stressing it remains committed to pro users.

We don't know exactly what Apple has in mind for the next Mac Pro, but the company says it will be modular in design to make it easier for Apple to "keep it fresh," and it will address shortcomings that have limited its utility in VR and high-end cinema production applications. Nvidia has also just announced Mac support for its latest "Pascal" graphics cards, which bodes well for the upcoming Mac Pro.

As for the price cuts on the current Mac Pro models, the previous quad-core configuration has been dropped entirely and other configurations have slid down in price points. The updated pricing is available now on Apple's online store, with price reductions also in place for custom-configured upgrades like processors and graphics cards.

MaskTouch: Turn Your iMac Into a Touchscreen

Microsoft's Surface Studio is already here, with its large 28-inch touchscreen and "zero-gravity" hinge offering a new way to interact with your computer. And even though much of the iPad's popularity is owed to its touchscreen, Apple has been reluctant to offer a similar experience on the iMac . Wouldn't it be great if you could use your iMac screen like an iPad? MaskTouch has taken this idea and made it reality.

MaskTouch is an add-on frame for your iMac that allows you to control it like a touchscreen, with support for up to ten points of touch. You can use your hands to make interactive, multi-user touches, such as drawing, playing the piano, and playing games. It also supports gesture recognition such as maximization, minimization, rotation, desktop switching, and Mission Control, many of the same gestures you may already be familiar with on the Mac through. Apple's Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

MaskTouch is crowdfunding on Indiegogo right now. Show us your interest by supporting it.

Apple Says New iMacs Geared Towards Pros Coming Later This Year
As part of the discussion about its desktop roadmap, Apple also revealed that it is planning to launch new iMacs later this year, with some models catering to pro-level users. One report claims these new iMacs could arrive in October and top out with Xeon processors, 64 GB of RAM, Thunderbolt 3, and faster NVMe flash storage and AMD graphics. A new keyboard could also be included. Details on that weren't mentioned, but rumors have indicated Apple has considered adding a Touch Bar to the Magic Keyboard.

Those hoping for a touchscreen iMac similar to Microsoft's Surface Studio are likely to be disappointed, as Apple once again stated it has no plans for touchscreen Macs or Macs based solely on ARM chips.

Despite rumors that the OLED "iPhone 8" could be priced above $1000, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich believes it is more likely to start around $850 or $900 for a 64 GB model, still a premium over current models.

Various rumors have indicated Apple has placed orders with Samsung for upwards of 70 million OLED display panels for the iPhone 8, although technical issues could force Apple to wait until October or November to begin selling the device. All three new iPhones set to be released this fall, which include not only the iPhone 8 but also more traditional iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models, are said to include the color-shifting True Tone display technology used in the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

New 9.7-Inch iPad Teardown Confirms It's Basically an Original iPad Air
The teardown experts at iFixit quickly got their hands on Apple's new low-cost iPad, and they've confirmed that the new tablet bears a strong resemblance to the original iPad Air. The new iPad is slightly thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro, due in part to a lack of a laminated display. Internal components are otherwise similar to those found in the iPad Air 2, with the exception of the faster A9 chip.

In more general tablet news, J.D. Power's semi-annual survey of consumer satisfaction rated Microsoft at the top of the list, dethroning Apple. Users of Microsoft's Surface tablets appreciated the styling and design and features such as stylus and keyboard accessories.
