Over three years since the launch of the radically redesigned cylindrical Mac Pro, Apple has finally publicly addressed the future of the professional desktop workstation, effectively
instituting a price cut on the existing models while revealing work on an all-new design is currently underway. The redesigned Mac Pro will be accompanied by a new Apple pro-level display, but they won't be ready this year and
perhaps not until 2019.
Apple uncharacteristically invited a small group of journalists to Cupertino for a roundtable discussion where the company outlined its roadmap and
apologized for missteps with the current Mac Pro design while stressing it remains committed to pro users.
We don't know exactly what Apple has in mind for the next Mac Pro, but the company says it will be modular in design to make it easier for Apple to "keep it fresh," and it will address shortcomings that have
limited its utility in VR and high-end cinema production applications. Nvidia has also just announced
Mac support for its latest "Pascal" graphics cards, which bodes well for the upcoming Mac Pro.
As for the price cuts on the current Mac Pro models, the previous quad-core configuration has been dropped entirely and other configurations have slid down in price points. The updated pricing is
available now on Apple's online store, with
price reductions also in place for custom-configured upgrades like processors and graphics cards.
