iPhone 8 Leaks Heating Up, Tim Cook vs. Uber, Intel Bumping Up Chip Debuts? - MacRumors

We're continuing to see a lot of iPhone 8 rumors, and while they're not always consistent, they're starting to give us a few more hints of what we might able to expect in the upcoming handset. The latest leak is an alleged schematic detailing the features of the casing. It shows not only the vertical dual-lens rear camera we've seen in other leaks, but also a circular area in the center of the device's rear that could be for wireless charging. We've also seen a similar dummy unit showing what the device might look like.

Notably, these latest leaks do not show a circular hole in the rear that has been seen on other leaks and which is presumed to be for a Touch ID sensor. Regardless of what the iPhone 8 looks like exactly, supplies are expected to be extremely tight when it launches. Reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says it will indeed be introduced in September alongside more modestly upgraded "iPhone 7s" models but that a delay in production ramp-up could push back availability by up to two months.

Tim Cook Threatened to Remove Uber From the App Store Over iPhone Tagging Tactics
In a profile of Uber founder and CEO Travis Kalanick, The New York Times reveals that Apple CEO Tim Cook personally called Kalanick to the Apple campus in early 2015 to confront him over Uber's "fingerprinting" of user's devices.

Uber's tactic involved registering unique hardware identifiers for each device upon app installation, allowing the company to monitor for fraudulent accounts even after the app was deleted and reinstalled. The tactic violated Apple's rules, however, and Uber geofenced the feature to prevent reviewers on Apple's campus from seeing the behavior. Apple discovered the sleight-of-hand, leading Cook to threaten Kalanick with removal of Uber's app from the App Store unless the company complied with Apple's rules.

iPhone 8 Renderings, iWork and iLife Apps Go Free, Earth Day, 'Server-Grade' iMac - MacRumors

The pace of iPhone 8 rumors continues to increase, and we're seeing some conflicting information about what to expect. Last weekend, we saw our first look at a design that's nearly identical in size to the iPhone 7 but with a display that takes up nearly the entire front of the device with only 4 mm of bezel around each side.

A different design schematic, however, shows a slightly larger rear shell made entirely of aluminum, so it's unclear which direction Apple is going with the iPhone 8. A Bloomberg report on Apple's plans repeats many of the circulating rumors and notes Apple has been working on several prototypes including one with glass on the front and back with a stainless steel frame and another "simpler" design with an aluminum back, which would explain why we're seeing conflicting leaks.

Apple Makes iMovie, GarageBand, and iWork Apps for Mac and iOS Free for All Users
For the past few years, Apple has made its iWork, iMovie, and GarageBand apps for Mac and iOS free for users who have purchased a new device, while those who had either older devices or devices purchased second-hand were required to pay anywhere from $5 to $20 per app.

Apple changed its policies this week, however, making all ten apps (Pages, Keynote, Numbers, iMovie, and GarageBand on both iOS and Mac) free for all users. It's a nice move that will help a number of users, and it also makes it easy for businesses and educational institutions deploying the apps through Apple's Volume Purchase Program, as they will no longer have to verify their devices qualify for free apps.

Apple Pledges to End Mining and Use 100% Recycled Materials for Products
Earth Day is coming up on Saturday, and there has been a host of related news for Apple this week led by the company's annual Environmental Responsibility Report. This year's report contains a lofty new goal to end mining of natural resources and shift to a "closed-loop supply chain" where all of the needed materials for its products can be obtained from recycled materials.

Apple has also released a series of short animated videos on environmental topics and launched an Apple Watch activity challenge encouraging users to exercise on Earth Day by offering a special badge and iMessage stickers. Finally, Apple's retail staff will be honoring the day as usual by wearing green shirts while the leaves of the Apple logos on the company's stores are turned green.

Apple is indeed said to be focused on software testing, looking to install its technology on a trio of 2015 Lexus RX 450h vehicles.

Apple to Dismantle Iconic Glass Cube at Fifth Avenue Store
As part of its major renovation and expansion project at its flagship Fifth Avenue store in Manhattan, Apple is spending $2 million to remove the iconic glass cube entry that sits on the plaza above the subterranean store. The cube will likely be returning once work is complete, but it's a big change for the short-term and it is unclear whether there will be any changes to it as part of the renovations.

Apple replaced the cube once before back in 2011, removing the original version that used 90 panes of glass and installing a revamped version using just 15 panes in a nearly seamless design.

iPhone 8 Rumors, Blood Glucose Sensors, Swatch Ticks Off Apple - MacRumors

With likely just five months to go until Apple unveils the iPhone 8, we've heard a lot of rumors but have yet to see any actual part leaks from the upcoming device. A new alleged design drawing could, however, offer a glimpse of what it might look like. While this could be a fake or a prototype design, the drawing depicts a device that's slightly larger and thicker than an iPhone 7 and which has only very narrow top and bottom bezels. A dual rear camera is shown in a vertical orientation, and a possible Touch ID sensor is shown in the middle of the device's rear casing.

Apple had been rumored to be integrating Touch ID directly into the display, but one recent rumor claims Apple has had trouble achieving this, which could explain moving the fingerprint sensor to the rear. Both the iPhone 8 and more traditional "iPhone 7s" models are said to include 3 GB of RAM and retain Lightning ports.

Apple has been rumored for some time to be working on blood glucose sensors for the Apple Watch, and a new report offers more detail on the project. Apple is said to have roughly 30 engineers working on optical sensors that could help diabetics monitor their blood glucose levels, a project that was reportedly started under Steve Jobs.

Apple is said to be moving into feasibility studies on the project, but even if it proves successful, it will be some time until the sensors can be integrated into a product like the Apple Watch.

Nvidia Releases macOS Drivers for GeForce 10-Series Graphics Cards
As we noted last week, graphics card manufacturer Nvidia announced plans to release Mac drivers for its latest GeForce 10-series "Pascal" graphics cards, and earlier this week the company did indeed release the beta drivers.

Apple has favored AMD over Nvidia for graphics over the past several years, and while these new beta drivers are only immediately useful to those upgrading older Mac Pro models, using external GPUs, or building Hackintoshes, they offer some optimism that Apple may readopt Nvidia technology and offer users broad upgrade possibilities for the upcoming redesigned Mac Pro.

Apple Talks Mac Pro and iMac Roadmap, iPhone 8 and Mac mini Rumors, Clips iOS App - MacRumors

Over three years since the launch of the radically redesigned cylindrical Mac Pro, Apple has finally publicly addressed the future of the professional desktop workstation, effectively instituting a price cut on the existing models while revealing work on an all-new design is currently underway. The redesigned Mac Pro will be accompanied by a new Apple pro-level display, but they won't be ready this year and perhaps not until 2019.

Apple uncharacteristically invited a small group of journalists to Cupertino for a roundtable discussion where the company outlined its roadmap and apologized for missteps with the current Mac Pro design while stressing it remains committed to pro users.

We don't know exactly what Apple has in mind for the next Mac Pro, but the company says it will be modular in design to make it easier for Apple to "keep it fresh," and it will address shortcomings that have limited its utility in VR and high-end cinema production applications. Nvidia has also just announced Mac support for its latest "Pascal" graphics cards, which bodes well for the upcoming Mac Pro.

As for the price cuts on the current Mac Pro models, the previous quad-core configuration has been dropped entirely and other configurations have slid down in price points. The updated pricing is available now on Apple's online store, with price reductions also in place for custom-configured upgrades like processors and graphics cards.

MaskTouch: Turn Your iMac Into a Touchscreen

Microsoft's Surface Studio is already here, with its large 28-inch touchscreen and "zero-gravity" hinge offering a new way to interact with your computer. And even though much of the iPad's popularity is owed to its touchscreen, Apple has been reluctant to offer a similar experience on the iMac . Wouldn't it be great if you could use your iMac screen like an iPad? MaskTouch has taken this idea and made it reality.

MaskTouch is an add-on frame for your iMac that allows you to control it like a touchscreen, with support for up to ten points of touch. You can use your hands to make interactive, multi-user touches, such as drawing, playing the piano, and playing games. It also supports gesture recognition such as maximization, minimization, rotation, desktop switching, and Mission Control, many of the same gestures you may already be familiar with on the Mac through. Apple's Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad.

MaskTouch is crowdfunding on Indiegogo right now. Show us your interest by supporting it.

Apple Says New iMacs Geared Towards Pros Coming Later This Year
As part of the discussion about its desktop roadmap, Apple also revealed that it is planning to launch new iMacs later this year, with some models catering to pro-level users. One report claims these new iMacs could arrive in October and top out with Xeon processors, 64 GB of RAM, Thunderbolt 3, and faster NVMe flash storage and AMD graphics. A new keyboard could also be included. Details on that weren't mentioned, but rumors have indicated Apple has considered adding a Touch Bar to the Magic Keyboard.

Those hoping for a touchscreen iMac similar to Microsoft's Surface Studio are likely to be disappointed, as Apple once again stated it has no plans for touchscreen Macs or Macs based solely on ARM chips.

iPhone 8 Predicted to Start at $850 to $900 for 64GB Model, $950 to $1,000 for 256GB Model
Despite rumors that the OLED "iPhone 8" could be priced above $1000, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich believes it is more likely to start around $850 or $900 for a 64 GB model, still a premium over current models.

Various rumors have indicated Apple has placed orders with Samsung for upwards of 70 million OLED display panels for the iPhone 8, although technical issues could force Apple to wait until October or November to begin selling the device. All three new iPhones set to be released this fall, which include not only the iPhone 8 but also more traditional iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models, are said to include the color-shifting True Tone display technology used in the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

The teardown experts at iFixit quickly got their hands on Apple's new low-cost iPad, and they've confirmed that the new tablet bears a strong resemblance to the original iPad Air. The new iPad is slightly thicker and heavier than the iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro, due in part to a lack of a laminated display.
