iPhone 6/6 Plus 'Touch Disease', Retail Changes, iPhone Speed Test vs. Note 7, iOS 9.3.5 Released - MacRumors

Our biggest story this week centered around "Touch Disease," an issue documented by repair and teardown firm iFixit as afflicting numerous iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units. Potentially related to the "Bendgate" controversy of 2014, Touch Disease presents as a gray flickering bar at the top of the display and loss of touch sensitivity.

Testing suggests the issue occurs when the chips responsible for touch sensing come loose from the logic board over time as the solder cracks from bending stresses placed on the device. Apple is not explicitly covering the issue as a defect, so those experiencing it under warranty should make sure to have it addressed. For others, a repair shop capable of replacing the affected chips may be the best option, as replacing the display or logic board may only be a temporary solution.

Apple Introduces Major Retail Changes, Including New Pro-Level Positions and Credo
Apple this past weekend held a series of all-staff meetings at its retail stores to announce some changes to operations. Among the changes are some new "Pro" and "Expert" level staff positions and some changes to how various areas of the stores are designated based on the company's latest store design concepts. Apple has also updated its credo, the belief statement that guides the company's vision for its retail stores.

The changes come as Apple has dropped the "Store" branding from its retail locations, opting instead to refer them simply as "Apple Fifth Avenue" or "Apple Union Square," for example. The change reflects a repositioning of the stores as gathering places for the community.

iPhone 6s Bests Samsung's New Galaxy Note 7 in App Speed Test
Earlier this month, Samsung released its latest and greatest phone, the Galaxy Note 7, featuring a Snapdragon 820 quad-core 64-bit processor, 4 GB of RAM, and more. In a head-to-head performance comparison with the nearly year-old iPhone 6s, however, the Note 7 fell short with the iPhone 6s launching a series of apps and rendering a short video much more quickly than Samsung's device. The comparison shows that while the iPhone may sometimes appear to lack in specs, such as the 2 GB of RAM on the iPhone 6s, Apple's integration of hardware and software can more than make up the difference when it comes to day-to-day usage that really matters.

Apple Releases iOS 9.3.5 With Fix for Three Critical Vulnerabilities Exploited by Hacking Group
Even though iOS 10 is right around the corner, Apple this week released an emergency iOS 9.3.5 patch for three security vulnerabilities that were being exploited in the wild by a group offering tools to secretly intercept communications on targeted devices. It's a nasty situation that has potentially seen governments use the tools to monitor communications by activists and journalists, and Apple moved quickly to patch the problem just two weeks after it was discovered.

Tim Cook Reaches Five Years as Apple CEO, Unlocks Over $100 Million in Bonuses
This week saw the fifth anniversary of Tim Cook officially taking the helm of Apple just six weeks before Steve Jobs' death, and the milestone has come with a number of retrospective pieces looking at the products Apple has introduced and other changes over Cook's tenure. Also notable for Cook is the milestone unlocking a major stock bonus currently worth in excess of $100 million as, despite a decline over the past year, Apple's stock has outperformed the broader S&P 500 index on Cook's watch.

New 10.5" iPad Pro in 2017, iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Rumors, Microsoft Mocks iPad Pro - MacRumors

Things have been awfully quiet on the iPad rumor front since the 9.7-inch iPad Pro launched earlier this year, but analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has broken it wide open this week with a report claiming Apple is working on three new iPads for 2017, led by a new 10.5-inch iPad Pro that would be joined by an updated 12.9-inch "iPad Pro 2" and a low-end 9.7-inch iPad.

Even bigger changes could be in store for as soon as 2018, with Apple reportedly looking to introduce "revolutionary" and "radical" design changes amid a shift to OLED displays. Unmentioned in Kuo's report is the iPad mini, which has been speculated to be on the chopping block as larger iPhones have sapped demand for the small tablet.

iPhone 7's Secondary Speaker Holes May Be Purely Cosmetic
The flurry of iPhone 7 rumors continues in the run-up to next month's unveiling, and the most talked about one this week indicates that the second row of speaker holes seen on the bottom of device mockups may be purely cosmetic other than a singular hole for the usual microphone. That would help explain conflicting rumors over whether the iPhone 7 will include a second speaker in place of the headphone jack.

In other iPhone 7 rumors, we've seen some mockups of the rumored darker "Space Black" color,  a rumor of faster charging, continued claims of a 256 GB model for at least the iPhone 7 Plus, and possible confirmation the iPhone 7's rear camera will support optical image stabilization for the first time in a 4.7-inch model. Finally, we're hearing the new phones will indeed be called the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, while there is now conflicting information about whether the launch will be on September 16 or 23. We should find out for sure on September 7, which is the rumored date for the unveiling.

First Machines Using Kaby Lake Processors Coming This Fall, but MacBook Pro Not Likely Among Them
Intel this week reiterated that it has begun shipping the first of its seventh-generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors to PC manufacturers with the first systems using the new chips to start appearing in the fall. Apple's much anticipated MacBook Pro won't be using them, however, as the higher-power chips needed for those machines likely won't be available until early next year. As a result, the expected MacBook Pro refresh this fall should use Intel's Skylake family of processors.

Apple Watch 2 With GPS for Improved Navigation, Fitness Tracking Coming This Fall
Backing up a report from last week, Bloomberg is now reporting that an updated Apple Watch is on the way for this fall, incorporating GPS and better health and fitness and tracking. The new model will not, however, include cellular connectivity, as Apple has been unable to bring down the battery drain of a cellular connection to acceptable levels.

Separately, a former Apple employee who worked on sensor design for the original Apple Watch revealed in a recent interview how Jony Ive's design team nixed an early idea to place sensors in the watch band, which would have allowed for the most accurate sensing on the inside of the wrist. Ive's design team immediately shot down the idea due to the desire for interchangeable bands, which drove the sensor teams to find new ways to collect the needed data from on top of the wrist while meeting Apple's design and fashion goals.

Apple Seeds Sixth Beta of iOS 10 to Developers and Public Beta Testers
We thought Apple might be done seeding new beta versions of its upcoming operating system updates, but it seems there were a few last fixes that needed to be pushed out. As a result, Apple this week seeded sixth developer betas of iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10, along with corresponding public betas of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. With likely only about three weeks to go until Apple's iPhone 7 media event, Apple should now be going into lockdown mode to finalize everything behind closed doors before releasing the final golden master version to developers following the event and the general public a week or two later.

New Surface Pro 4 Ad Takes on Apple's 'What's a Computer?' iPad Pro Campaign
Just two weeks after Apple released its "What is a Computer?" ad positioning the iPad Pro as a replacement for a traditional PC, Microsoft is hitting back with an ad for the Surface Pro 4. The ad features dueling voice assistants, with Siri on an iPad Pro telling Cortana on a Surface Pro 4, "I'm a computer now, like you." Cortana strikes back by highlighting her Intel Core i7 processor, full access to Microsoft Office beyond the mobile app versions, a trackpad, and external port options, and all Siri can do is tout her Smart Keyboard.

Major MacBook Pro Update Coming, iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Rumors, New Betas for iOS 10, macOS Sierra, and More - MacRumors

We've been hearing rumblings for a while now about a revamped MacBook Pro with a new OLED "touch bar" replacing the traditional function keys along the top of the keyboard, and it's looking more and more like this update will indeed be arriving later this year. The latest rumors claim the new MacBook Pro will be somewhat thinner and have a smaller footprint than the existing models, although the design will not be tapered like the MacBook and MacBook Air.

Other changes include Touch ID support, a slightly larger trackpad, USB-C support, a shift to AMD for high-end graphics, and perhaps new color options. Another report claims the MacBook Pro's Touch ID support will be built into the power button.

The new MacBook Pro reportedly won't be launched at Apple's iPhone 7 event in September, so it's unclear whether Apple will be holding a separate event perhaps in October or if it will forego a media event introduction for the new notebook.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to Feature Pressure-Sensitive Home Button With Haptic Feedback
It looks like Apple is shooting for September 7 as the date for its iPhone 7 media event, and many of the rumored details we've been hearing over the past few months are firming up. Among the expected changes are a new pressure-sensitive home button with haptic feedback similar to recent Mac trackpads, a dual-lens rear camera for the larger iPhone 7 Plus, removed antenna lines from across the back of the devices, and a second speaker replacing the headphone jack.

Beyond the rumors, we're starting to see more part leaks for the iPhone 7, including fresh photos of the display assemblybare logic boards, and the device's main A10 chip. We're also seeing increasing high-quality dummy models that are giving us a good sense of what the iPhone 7 should look like, including some shots of gold iPhone 7 and 7 Plus units and video of a series of dummy units that includes a single-lens iPhone 7 Plus that we're not expecting to see released and which may have been a backup plan for Apple during development.

As for how Apple expects iPhone 7 owners to use headphones without a traditional 3.5 mm jack, we've seen some potential Lightning EarPods that look pretty close to what we'd expect from Apple and have heard rumors that Apple has been working on a custom Bluetooth chip to help drive wireless earphones.

iOS 10 Beta 5 Tidbits: New Lock Screen Sound, Widget Tweaks, and More
Just a week after the last set of beta operating system updates, Apple pushed out the fifth beta versions of iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watchOS 3, and tvOS 10. Make sure to check out our video highlighting some of the changes in iOS 10 beta 5, including a new sound when locking your device.

Given Apple's history of beta releases, this could actually be the final set of beta releases before the "golden master" versions are seeded following next month's media event. Apple typically stops seeding new betas for testing about a month before its event in order to put the finishing touches on things and add in secret features needed for new hardware without tipping its hand to testers.

Faster Apple Watch 2 With GPS, Barometer, Larger Battery, and Same Thickness to Launch Later This Year
It's coming up on 18 months since the launch of the Apple Watch, and while we haven't heard a ton of rumors about hardware upgrades, there have been some reports of an update before the end of the year. Rather reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has now weighed in with his own predictions of an Apple Watch 2 with GPS, a barometer, a faster processor, better waterproofing, and a larger battery. He does not predict direct cellular connectivity to come to the Apple Watch line until 2017.

Alongside this new Apple Watch 2, Kuo also predicts Apple will upgrade the Apple Watch 1 to maintain a lower price point. The updated version would include a faster processor and better waterproofing, but would lack some of the Apple Watch 2 features such as GPS and a barometer.

Apple Says 'You're Only as Good as the Last Thing You Did' Amid Sales Slowdown
Apple executives Tim Cook, Eddy Cue, and Craig Federighi recently sat down with Fast Company to address the recent slowdown in the company's sales and make the case that Apple is taking the long view with its projects. The executives emphasized Apple's goal to "be there from when you wake up till when you decide to go to sleep" as it pushes integrated hardware, software, and services.

In a follow-up piece based on the same interview, Cue and Federighi provided a bit more of an inside look at Apple's development processes, in particular addressing the embarrassment of a lackluster initial launch of Apple Maps and how the company has learned from its mistakes. Both articles covering the interviews are good reads for an interesting look into Apple.

CVS Launches Barcode-Based 'CVS Pay' in Lieu of Apple Pay
Pharmacy chain CVS has been one of the major holdouts against Apple Pay, having gone as far as disabling NFC payments at its stores shortly after the launch of Apple Pay in order to prevent users from paying via the method. And now we see why: CVS today launched CVS Pay, its own barcode-based payment and loyalty system accessible via an app.

CVS is just the latest major retailer to unveil its own payment system, joining others such as Walmart and Target. While retailers like being able to bundle payment services with other features in their own dedicated apps, users remain frustrated with the fragmentation Apple has been seeking to avoid with Apple Pay serving as one-stop location for mobile wallet payments.

Working iPhone 7 Caught on Video, Apple TV Remote App, New iOS 9.3.4 Prevents Jailbreaking - MacRumors

With the official unveiling of the iPhone 7 probably just over a month away, rumors and leaks continue to accelerate, and we've now gotten our first glimpse at what could be a functioning iPhone 7 device with some photos showing it running Apple's SwitchBoard testing software and a video showing the camera in testing mode.

Meanwhile, Samsung held an event this week to show off its new Galaxy Note7 smartphone, taking the opportunity to mock Apple over the rumored removal of the headphone jack in the iPhone 7.

Apple Releases Redesigned 'Apple TV Remote' App for iPhone
Following a period of developer testing, Apple this week officially released its revamped Apple TV Remote app for the iPhone, offering similar controls to those found on the hardware remote included with the set-top box but with some extra functionality such as an onscreen keyboard for easier text entry.

Siri voice control is supported, and the iPhone's gyroscope and accelerometer allow the iPhone to act as another game controller for the Apple TV. The app can also be used to control the second- and third-generation Apple TV boxes, although those devices feature simpler interfaces and lack many of the current Apple TV's features such as Siri control and an App Store.

Apple Releases iOS 9.3.4 With Security Fix to Defeat Jailbreak
Apple has released iOS 9.3.4 for all recent iOS devices, an update that includes an "important security update" recommended for all users. That important update is a fix for a single issue, which just happens to be the one exploited by the Pangu Team to allow devices running iOS 9.2 through iOS 9.3.3 to be jailbroken.

Meanwhile, Apple continues to seed versions of iOS 10, macOS Sierra, watch OS 3, and tvOS 10 for testing. Developers received their fourth betas of those updates this week, while public beta testers received their third versions of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra. Notably, the new betas of iOS and macOS include dozens of new emoji to support gender diversity. Also be sure to check out our iOS 10 beta 4 tidbits video for highlights of what's changed in this release.

Apple Releases New 'What's a Computer?' iPad Pro Ad
For the first time since the iPad Pro's debut late last year, Apple has released a new ad for the device, positioning it as a computer replacement. The vibe of the ad is a bit strange, as it feels similar to many of the claims made by Microsoft in its Surface Pro ads. And it's also a bit of a sore subject for Mac fans who have been waiting quite some time for updates to those products.

In other iPad Pro news, Apple this week launched a bunch of international versions of its iPad Pro Smart Keyboard for both 12.9-inch and 9.7-inch models. Until now, U.S. English has been the only Smart Keyboard layout available to purchase. Logitech has also released its CREATE keyboard case for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro, notable because Logitech is the only third-party company so far to build keyboard accessories that take advantage of the iPad Pro's Smart Connector.

Apple Watch 2 Said to Include Thinner 'One Glass Solution' Display
Rumors about the second-generation Apple Watch are still a bit scant, but one recent report claims it will use a thinner "one glass solution" display technology that eliminates one of the glass layers used in the current watch display.

Overall, the Apple Watch update is expected to be a fairly minor refresh, with cellular connectivity, faster performance, and better battery life perhaps being key upgrades. The new model could debut around the same September timeframe as the iPhone 7.
