OS X Yosemite Golden Master Candidate, iOS 8.0.2 and 8.1, New Mac Minis and iMacs Coming? - MacRumors

Apple is putting the finishing touches on OS X Yosemite ahead of its public launch expected later this month, with the company releasing a Golden Master Candidate version to developers this week. A parallel fourth public beta version has also been released to members of that testing program. The golden master candidate designation indicates that Apple hopes this will be the final version released to the public, but if any final bugs are found in the final weeks of testing, the company could tweak things a bit more as it did last year with OS X Mavericks just before launch. Alongside this week's seed, Apple is also officially inviting developers to submit apps designed for OS X Yosemite to the Mac App Store for review.

Consumer Reports: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Not as Bendable as Believed
While controversy over potential accidental bending of iPhone 6 Plus units erupted in the days after the device's release, additional testing and information has shown the issue to not be as significant as it may have first appeared. A widely cited study by Consumer Reports showed the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to be marginally more susceptible to bending forces than previous iPhones, but in line with competing devices from other manufacturers. Apple has also spoken out on the issue, calling it "extremely rare" with normal use and noting that only nine customers had reported the problem to issue in the first few days of availability. The company also invited reporters into its labs where it tests the durability of its products, outlining a number of thorough tests performed during the development process.

Apple Releases iOS 8.0.2 With Fix for Cellular Issues, Broken Touch ID
Just as our newsletter was about to go out last week, Apple released its first maintenance update to iOS 8 in the form of iOS 8.0.1, but it quickly became apparent that the update was breaking cellular connectivity and Touch ID on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices, prompting Apple to pull the update. Apple quickly spread word that it was working on an iOS 8.0.2 update to fix the issue, later noting that approximately 40,000 users had been affected by it. Roughly 31 hours after iOS 8.0.1 began bringing down Apple's latest iPhones, the company released iOS 8.0.2, bundling in the changes from iOS 8.0.1 with fixes for the problems that update carried.

Apple Seeds First iOS 8.1 Beta to Developers
Just two weeks after the release of iOS 8, Apple has already begun seeding developers with builds of iOS 8.1. The update is expected to deliver Apple Pay support as Apple has announced an October launch for that feature, but Apple Pay settings remain hidden in the current build. Also hidden are references to iPad support for Apple Pay via Touch ID, presumably related to in-app purchases rather than point-of-sale purchases via NFC. Looking beyond iOS 8.1, Apple is also working on iOS 8.2 and 8.3, which may be tied to future hardware updates such as Apple Watch and a rumored 12.9-inch "iPad Pro."

Apple May Launch 27-Inch Retina iMac With AMD Graphics as Soon as This Month
Multiple sources are reporting that Apple appears to be putting the final touches on Retina iMacs, with a launch coming as early as later this month. Retina support may, however, be limited to 27-inch models at 5120 x 2880 pixels, with the smaller 21.5-inch models continuing to carry 1920 x 1080 displays. Apple will apparently continue to use Intel's Haswell chips for the new machines, as next-generation Broadwell chips are not yet available, and the company may switch from NVIDIA to AMD for discrete graphics on Retina models.
