Late last week, Apple mistakenly released an internal beta version of the HomePod operating system to a public server, and given the HomePod will run a version of iOS, a number of details about the iPhone 8 have been discovered in the firmware.

Among the interesting details about the iPhone 8 discovered in the HomePod firmware so far are a glyph apparently representing the iPhone 8's general design and evidence of the rumored face detection capabilities, details about a split status bar and tap-to-wake functionality, a "SmartCamera" feature that could automatically recognize different types of scenes and perhaps optimize camera settings, and signs that Apple Pay might be able to be authorized using facial recognition.

We've also seen a sketchy leak of a claimed SIM removal card insert for the iPhone 8 and some interesting concepts of how the iOS 11 interface might deal with the "notch" at the top of the iPhone 8's display where the earpiece, camera, and sensors are located. Finally, make sure to check out our video taking a look at some of these recent leaks.

HomePod Firmware Reveals Further Details on Apple's Smart Speaker
default.jpg In addition to the iPhone 8, the HomePod firmware of course also includes some new details on the HomePod itself. Some of the discoveries include the revelation that the speaker runs a full version of iOS with an internally named "SoundBoard" app serving as the shell for internal apps such as Music and Podcasts, no sign of third-party app support, and accessibility features such as VoiceOver.

Further digging within the HomePod firmware revealed that the display on the top of the speaker has a resolution of 272 x 340 pixels, although it is unclear what will be shown on the display beyond the Siri waveform seen in demos and press materials so far. Developers have also discovered sound files within the firmware giving a taste of what users will hear when alarms and timers go off or when interacting with the speaker. And of course, we've also put together a video summarizing the recent findings.

Apple Listing Select Movies as 4K and HDR in iTunes Purchase History
default.jpg There have been a few rumors about Apple working on an updated Apple TV capable of supporting higher-resolution 4K video content, and a recent discovery by a MacRumors forum member may support that notion. iTunes purchase and rental histories are now showing some films as "4K, HDR" even though the downloaded files remain of lower resolution.

With the increasing popularity of 4K TVs and the rollout of HDR (high dynamic range) technology to increase color and contrast, it makes sense for Apple to begin providing content in these formats. By itself, the new mentions of 4K and HDR don't necessarily mean support is coming to the Apple TV, but it makes sense and with 4K Apple TV rumors already circulating, we may indeed be getting closer to an update for the set-top box.
