New AirPods, iMacs, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and More, but Where's AirPower? - MacRumors

logo.png
Even though Apple's media event isn't until next Monday, Apple this week has pushed out quite a few product updates, clearing the decks so it can focus on services at the event.

Likely the biggest announcement of the week was an update to Apple's massively popular AirPods wireless earphones. The updated AirPods come with a new H1 wireless chip that enables "Hey Siri" support, allows for up to 50 percent more talk time, and lets you switch between paired devices twice as fast as before. Check out our full comparison to see what's new compared to the original AirPods.

The new AirPods also have an optional wireless charging case (also sold separately if you're happy with your first-generation AirPods) that lets you charge the case on any Qi charger. The new AirPods are priced at $159 with a standard case or $199 with the wireless charging case, while the new case sells for $79 on its own. Shipping dates for the $199 package are already slipping into April, so supplies may be tight for a while.

Apple Launches New 10.5-Inch iPad Air With A12 Bionic Chip and Apple Pencil Support, Starts at $499
default.jpg Monday was iPad day in Apple's spring update bonanza, with Apple delivering a revived iPad Air to better split the difference between the cheaper iPads and the iPad Pro.

It's a replacement for the 10.5-inch iPad Pro with upgrades in some areas and downgrades in others, and it lets Apple once again offer a mainstream iPad starting at $499. It comes with an A12 Bionic chip straight out of Apple's latest iPhones and supports the first-generation Apple Pencil.

Apple Updates iMac Lineup With Up to 8-Core 9th-Gen Intel Processors and Radeon Pro Vega Graphics Options
default.jpg Apple's iMac lineup got its first update in nearly two years on Tuesday, bringing Intel's latest 8th- and 9th-generation "Coffee Lake" processors, improved graphics including high-end Radeon Pro Vega options, and more.

While it's a much-needed update for the lineup, it's pretty much a spec bump, with no changes to the overall design or the port options. Pricing continues to start at $1299 for the 21.5-inch 4K models and $1799 for the 27-inch 5K models, although B&H Photo is currently knocking $200 off on pre-orders of the entry-level 4K iMac for a limited time.

Apple Announces New Fifth-Generation iPad Mini With Apple Pencil Support, Revamped Retina Display and A12 Bionic Chip
default.jpg The iPad Air wasn't Apple's only new tablet announced this week, with the company also launching an update to its long-neglected iPad mini. The fifth-generation iPad mini is essentially a smaller version of the new iPad Air with the exception of a Smart Connector. It offers an A12 Bionic chip, first-generation Apple Pencil support, and a much-improved display compared to its predecessor.

The new iPad mini continues to start at $399, coming with 64GB of storage and available in silver, space gray, and gold. 128GB models and cellular connectivity are available at higher price points. Early press reviews have found it to be a very worthy upgrade for fans of Apple's smallest tablet.

Most notably, Apple has added a new Radeon Pro Vega 64X graphics card at the high end, while also offering an option for an astounding 256GB of RAM. That RAM upgrade comes at an equally astounding price of $5200.

Beyond the iMac Pro, Apple reduced upgrade pricing for high-capacity SSD storage on a number of its other Macs. On the MacBook Pro, 2TB and 4TB SSD options have dropped by $200 and $400 respectively, while the 1.5TB SSD option on the MacBook Air has dropped by $100 and the 2TB option on the Mac mini has dropped by $200. Finally, Apple cut pricing on the high-end 64GB RAM upgrade on the Mac Pro, shaving $400 off of that option.

New AirPower Image With iPhone XS Appears Within Source Code on Apple's Website
default.jpg While Apple announced its wireless charging case for AirPods this week, we've yet to see the debut of the obvious accessory partner for it: AirPower.

Apple's wireless charging mat remains missing 18 months after Apple first previewed it, but there are still signs it may be coming soon. Apple reportedly approved production on it earlier this year, and following the AirPods debut this week we found a new AirPower image hidden in the page source on Apple's website. Apple has also just secured rights to an AirPower trademark, so it certainly looks like Apple is in the final stages of launch preparation.

Apple's March 25 Event, WWDC Dates Announced, iPad and AirPods Rumors - MacRumors

As expected, Apple will be holding a media event on Monday, March 25, with the company sending out invitations this week carrying the tagline "It's Show Time." The slogan and accompanying graphics suggest the event will see the introduction of Apple's long-rumored streaming video service, and we're also expecting to see Apple unveil a subscription news and magazine service.

Less certain is new hardware, with some reliable sources indicating that no hardware announcements are expected. We are, however, expecting a number of near-term updates including AirPods and AirPower, iPad, iPad mini, and possibly iPod touch. It's possible some of these updates could occur via press release around the time of Apple's event.

Check out everything we expect to see at the event in our overview guide that we'll keep updating in the run-up to the big day.

Apple Announces WWDC 2019 Kicks Off on June 3 in San Jose, Registration Open for Developers

Registered developers have until March 20 to sign up for the ticket lottery, with tickets for the weeklong conference priced at $1,599.

Apple will undoubtedly be showing off its upcoming iOS 13 and macOS 10.15 releases at the event, with watchOS 6 and tvOS 13 also likely to make appearances. WWDC is also frequently (but not always) the site of hardware announcements, so we may see some news on that front such as the redesigned Mac Pro Apple has been promising since 2017.

Apple Suppliers 'Gearing Up for Mass Production' of Updated iPad and AirPods
Apple's suppliers are reportedly preparing to start mass production of updated AirPods and new iPad models, although as we noted earlier, we're not sure whether they will show up at Apple's March 25 event.

Recent sources are indicating no major design changes for the upcoming low-cost iPad, although others have said the display could see a bump from 9.7 inches to 10.2 inches. A separate report claims Apple is working on both a 10.2-inch low-cost iPad and a larger 10.5-inch model that will not carry the iPad Pro branding seen on the current model of that size, although the two new models are not expected to launch at the same time.

Relatively reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this week issued a new report outlining his expectations for Apple's rumored augmented reality glasses.

According to Kuo, the AR glasses could be ready to launch by mid-2020 and would be primarily positioned as a display accessory for the iPhone. That design would put the computing power and other hardware in a paired iPhone, allowing the glasses to be as lightweight as possible.

Spotify Files Complaint Against Apple With European Regulators Over 'Unfair' App Store Practices
Spotify this week filed a complaint against Apple in Europe, alleging that Apple's App Store policies amount to unfair business practices. With Apple taking a 30 percent cut of subscriptions purchased through App Store apps, Spotify is forced to choose between absorbing that 30 percent cut or charging more for its premium subscriptions when purchased through the company's iOS app.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek elaborated on the company's position today, referring to Apple's in-app purchase revenue slice as "a competitor tax" that makes it difficult for services like Spotify to compete against Apple Music.

Camera Comparison: iPhone XS Max vs. Samsung Galaxy S10+
Samsung recently debuted its new lineup of Galaxy smartphones, and we took the opportunity to perform a camera comparison between the Galaxy S10+ and the iPhone XS Max. Ahead of time, we asked our followers to tell us which photos they thought were taken by each phone and which they preferred, and the results were interesting to see.

Samsung also just launched its latest AirPods competitors, the Galaxy Buds, and we went hands-on with the new earbuds to see how they stack up. Your purchasing decision will almost certainly come down to which ecosystem you're already invested in, but it's nice to take a look at what competitors are doing with their products.

Using an iPhone SE in 2019, Foldable iPhones?, Apple's Roadmap Will 'Blow You Away' - MacRumors

Following its discontinuation last September, Apple has been occasionally bringing back the iPhone SE for sale in its clearance store, giving fans of the smaller form factor a final chance to pick one up. It's been almost exactly three years since the iPhone SE was introduced, so we decided to take a look and see just how it holds up in 2019.

While the iPhone SE almost feels like a toy if you're used to handling larger iPhones, it's still remarkably capable if you're primarily looking for basic functions. You won't get all of the latest camera improvements, for example, but it still takes decent photos.

Apple still has a few iPhone SE models available in its clearance store starting at $249, so if you're interested in getting a cheap iPhone that tucks easily into a pocket, you should jump on these!

Samsung Offers to Supply Foldable Displays to Apple and Google
Expensive foldable smartphones from Samsung and Huawei have been the talk of the past few weeks, and it sounds like Samsung's display unit is trying to get the components into even more devices. Samsung is reportedly talking to both Apple and Google about supplying the foldable screens for future products.

While Apple hasn't said it has plans to launch any foldable smartphones, the company has clearly been looking into the technology for a number of years. The latest evidence comes in the form of a patent application addressing the idea of a foldable phone selectively heating its hinge region in cold weather to help prevent damage to the display.

Apple may also be looking at something better than the plastic display covers from Samsung and Huawei that can crease over time, as Apple's glass supplier Corning is said to be moving full speed ahead on its bendable glass materials that could potentially be used in future foldable iPhones.

Tim Cook to Investors: Apple is Working on Future Products That Will 'Blow You Away'
Apple's annual shareholders meeting took place last Friday, and while much of the meeting was focused on investor business, Tim Cook did take a few questions from those in attendance. In one notable comment, Cook told investors Apple is "rolling the dice" on some future products that will "blow you away." Cook also noted that Apple is aiming to reduce the $1,200 price of the new MacBook Air over time and that the company is working on a long product roadmap related to Apple Watch and AirPods in particular.

Separately, Cook and other Apple executives are said to be heavily involved in the company's push into original television and film content, to an extent that some creators may not be thrilled about. According to reports, some Hollywood producers view Apple's input as "intrusive" and suffering from a "lack of clarity" about what the company wants to see. Cook himself has been visiting production sets, with one of his more frequent notes to producers being "don't be so mean!"

Apple Says iPhones With Third-Party Batteries Now Eligible for Repairs
Apple has long denied repair service to users whose devices have unauthorized third-party batteries installed, but the company has recently changed its policies to offer these devices some coverage.

Apple's own Genius Bar staffers and authorized repair providers are now permitted to perform repairs on devices with third-party batteries, including replacing the third-party battery with a genuine one for Apple's standard replacement fee. Be aware, though, that if the repair provider is unable to remove the third-party battery due to adhesives or other issues, it will require a full device replacement at Apple's out-of-warranty cost.

Apple May Have Quietly Addressed 'Flexgate' in 2018 MacBook Pros
For a while now, we've been following the "Flexgate" issue, which is the controversy over display cables in recent MacBook Pro models that fray and break over time, necessitating expensive repairs.

It appears Apple may have quietly addressed the issue in its latest 2018 models, as the cables are 2mm longer than in previous generations. It doesn't sound like much difference, but it's enough to prevent the cables from rubbing and being subjected to stress when the display is opened and closed.

Tim Cook Changes Twitter Name to 'Tim Apple' After President Trump's Name Flub
In a widely covered incident yesterday, President Trump mistakenly referred to Tim Cook as "Tim Apple" while sitting next to the Apple CEO at a Workforce Policy Advisory Board meeting. Cook is a member of the board, which is exploring how to "revamp the American workforce to better meet the challenges of the 21st century."

In an apparent nod to President Trump's misstatement, Cook updated his Twitter display name to change "Cook" to an Apple symbol. It's a quiet acknowledgment, but it's receiving considerable attention as, due to Cook's penchant for maintaining a quiet and civil demeanor, this is probably the most we'll hear from him on the subject.
