iPhone 8 Details and Event Rumors, iOS 11 Tidbits, New Intel Chips, Samsung's Note 8 - MacRumors

feature.jpg
With September quickly approaching, we should soon be hearing about a date for Apple's iPhone media event, and a new rumor claims Apple is targeting Tuesday, September 12 for the event with a launch for the new iPhones following on September 22. The dates make sense, but it's hard to say whether they're based on actual information or simply reasonable guesses at this point.

Other iPhone 8 rumors this week included a claim of 64/256/512 GB storage options and a number of photo leaks including the A11 chip, display assembly and other components, and a 3D sensing camera. We also went hands-on with some new iPhone 8 cases and a dummy model, yielding a good idea of how the new phone and accessories may look together.

Finally, while the all-new iPhone 8 will undoubtedly be the star of the show, Apple is expected to also introduce new "iPhone 7s" models next month. We've just seen a solid photo leak of the bare logic board for the iPhone 7s Plus, which looks very similar to the same part from the iPhone 7 Plus but which matches the pin layout of the leaked A11 chip and appears to confirm the presence of an Intel LTE modem.

iOS 11's SOS Feature Allows You to Temporarily Disable Touch ID and Require Passcode
default.jpg With iOS 11 likely set for public release in less than a month, we're still learning new details as Apple continues to tweak things in the beta period. A few new tidbits have recently come to light, including the discovery that the SOS feature will allow you to temporarily disable Touch ID, a tweak to Safari that will strip off Google's Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) cruft when sharing links, and a fix that will prevent an iPhone 7 passcode-guessing hardware box from working.

Some early prototype Control Center and App Switcher videos were also discovered in iOS 11 betas, but it's unclear if these ideas were discarded or if they'll end up being specific to the iPhone 8.

Apple is continuing its rapid seeding of new betas to developers and public beta testers, pushing out the seventh developer betas of iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, tvOS 11, and watchOS 4, along with corresponding sixth public betas of all but watchOS.

Intel Launches First Eighth-Generation Core Processors, Paving Way For Quad-Core 13-Inch MacBook Pro
default.jpg Intel is continuing to push forward with its next-generation chip announcements, this week unveiling new eighth-generation Core chips that will be coming to notebooks later this year. The new U-series chips are all quad-core designs, and if Apple deems the graphics powerful enough they could come to the 13-inch MacBook Pro and perhaps the MacBook Air and Mac mini should Apple choose to update those machines. This is just the first wave of eighth-generation Core chips to be announced, with additional low-power "Cannon Lake" and higher-power "Coffee Lake" chips yet to come.

The Note 8 borrows a few features such as a "Live Focus" portrait mode from the iPhone but also offers a preview of some of what we're expecting to see in the iPhone 8 with the large display. Keep an eye out for our hands-on video comparing the Note 8 to iPhone 8 rumors later today.

In addition to the Note 8, Samsung has also confirmed it is working on a smart speaker that will compete against an increasingly crowded field. Apple will be joining the market in December with its HomePod, previewed at WWDC back in June.

AccuWeather for iOS Sent Location Data to Monetization Company Even When Location Sharing Was Off
default.jpg Popular iOS weather forecasting app AccuWeather found itself in some hot water this week after it was discovered that the app was sending users' location information to monetization company Reveal Mobile, even when the users denied explicit permission for the app to access location information. In the absence of this permission, Reveal Mobile's tools built into the AccuWeather app wouldn't collect your GPS location but would still collect your Wi-Fi router name and BSSID, which can frequently be used to find your location fairly accurately.

After AccuWeather and Reveal Mobile initially released a joint statement attempting to explain "misinterpretation" of the SDK tools, AccuWeather yesterday updated its app to completely remove the Reveal Mobile SDK.

Apple Watch and iPhone 8 Rumors, New Betas, Intel's Ice Lake Chips - MacRumors

While the iPhone will undoubtedly be the highlight of a likely September media event, signs are pointing toward the launch of an updated Apple Watch as well. Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a couple of reports about the "Series 3" model in recent days, saying there will be no "obvious change" to the form factor compared to current models.

Kuo also says LTE cellular connectivity will be the main selling point, although it is unlikely users will be able to make direct phone calls from the watch. There is a possibility that VoIP services like FaceTime or Skype could work though. The updated Apple Watch is said to be in the "final testing phase," with mass production likely starting soon.

One interesting question about this likely September event is where it will be held. The Steve Jobs Theater at the new Apple Park campus would seem to be the clear first-choice location, but the campus remains under construction, so it's unclear if it will be ready in time to host an event. The latest drone video does show a newly paved walkway to the theater, so perhaps there's still a chance.

New Blurry Videos Potentially Show iPhone 8 on Production Line at Factory
Excitement about the iPhone 8 continues to build, and this week we got a look at a couple of short blurry videos that allegedly show rear shells for the device being produced in a Chinese factory. A separate leak shows claimed photos of the internals of the induction charging pad accessory rumored to be launching alongside or somewhat after the iPhone 8.

Finally, designer Maksim Petriv has mocked up what some high-profile apps like Netflix and Spotify, as well as the App Store, could look like on the iPhone 8, taking advantage of the much taller display and either embracing or hiding the notch at the top for the camera and sensors.

Apple Seeds Sixth Beta of iOS 11 to Developers and Public Beta Testers

The new set of releases comes just a week after the previous group and while we're continuing to see some improvements and tweaks like new icons for Maps and the App Store, Apple seems to be in the final push to lock everything down and polish up these releases for their official launches next month.

Lack of iPad Pro Smart Connector Accessories Blamed on Long Wait Times for Components
Coming up on two years since the debut of the Smart Connector on the original iPad Pro, there are still very few accessories on the market supporting the connector. In fact, Logitech is still the only third-party company offering accessories for it.

A new report outlines some of the challenges accessory makers are facing in bringing Smart Connector-compatible products to market, including long wait times and high costs for the required components, a desire to differentiate themselves with unique product designs that take time to implement, and a general satisfaction with the more commonly used Bluetooth technology featured in these types of products.

Intel Shares Details on Upcoming 'Ice Lake' Chips to Follow Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake
It feels like we just got Intel's latest Kaby Lake chips, but the chipmaker is already sharing information several generations ahead, this week revealing the roadmap for future "Ice Lake" chips that will be manufactured on a 10nm+ process. More imminently, we're looking forward to Coffee Lake chips being introduced starting next week, with a shift to Cannon Lake chips for notebooks likely in early 2018. Ice Lake for desktops and notebooks should follow in late 2018 or early 2019 as Intel continues its cadence of shrinking and optimizing its chip manufacturing processes.

A Ten-Minute Silent Song Is Soaring Up the iTunes Charts
On the lighter side of Apple news, this week saw the release of a ten-minute song on iTunes and Apple Music that features nothing but silence. Created by Samir Mezrahi to address the problem of iPhones automatically playing the first song alphabetically in the user's library when plugging into a car stereo, the 99-cent track entitled "A a a a a Very Good Song" gives you an opportunity to cue up your desired playlist without having to hear the exact same song every time you plug in your iPhone in the car. The song rose into the top 50 on the U.S. iTunes Store charts, and it's still just barely hanging in the top 100.

iPhone 8 Dummy Hands-On and Rumors, New Betas, Apple Watch 3 With LTE - MacRumors

iPhone 8 rumors are flying fast and furious as we've reached roughly one month to go until its expected introduction, and we just got our hands on an iPhone 8 dummy model that gives a great idea of what the device might look like.

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says he now believes all three iPhones (OLED iPhone 8 and more traditional iPhone 7s and 7s Plus models) will launch simultaneously in September. He had previously believed the iPhone 8 launch would be delayed until October or November, but he and others are now seeing improving signs of mass production starting on all three models. Kuo also believes that all three iPhones will only be available in three colors: black, silver, and gold.

Meanwhile, Apple's prematurely released HomePod firmware continues to reveal details on the iPhone 8, including evidence of face-scanning capabilities working even when the device is laying flat on a table, signs that notifications will be muted when you're already looking at your device, details on facial recognition extending to payments and third-party apps, and specifics on how the virtual home button will behave.

In image leaks this week, we've seen a claimed photo showing the internals of the iPhone 8, a widely shared case maker's concept image based on other leaks, and photos of a "copper" colored dummy model that we're unsure if there's any accuracy to.

Apple Watch Series 3 May Feature 'All-New Form Factor'
Late last week, Bloomberg reported that the Apple Watch Series 3, likely set to debut as soon as next month alongside new iPhone models, will include LTE cellular connectivity, allowing users to stream music, send messages, download apps, and perhaps even make phone calls without needing to be within range of a paired iPhone.

Daring Fireball's John Gruber followed up with his own claims that the new Apple Watch will include an "all-new form factor," which would be a departure from previous rumors that the next update would again focus on internal changes rather than external ones. Gruber later clarified that he "wouldn't bet the house" on the information he heard from "a little birdie," so it'll be very interesting to see what happens with the Apple Watch.

For a visual look at these rumors and their context, head over to our YouTube channel.

New Dummy Video Compares iPhone 7s Plus to iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 Plus
We've heard a ton of rumors about the OLED "iPhone 8," but much less about the more traditional iPhone 7s and 7s Plus models Apple is also expected to introduce next month. We're expecting them to look similar to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models in most regards, with the most significant change said to be a shift to glass backs in order to support wireless inductive charging.

YouTuber Danny Winget has gotten his hands on a dummy model of the iPhone 7s Plus and put together a nice video comparing it to both the iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 8 dummy. In the video, he takes a look at how the shift to a glass back changes the look of the device and helps better hide the antenna bands on the casing.

Updated iPhone SE Rumored for Early 2018 Launch
While we're expecting three new large-screened iPhone models next month, Apple may also be planning an early 2018 update for its smaller iPhone SE model. Rumors on the iPhone SE have been few and far between, so it's hard to get a handle on what's in store for it, but the latest reports suggest it could have similar internal specs to the iPhone 7 such as an A10 chip and 12-megapixel rear camera. Rumors suggest it may be manufactured by Apple's partner Wistron, which recently launched iPhone production in India.

Some Apple Park Employees Said to Be Dissatisfied With Open Office Design
Apple is still putting the finishing touches on its massive new Apple Park campus and just starting to move employees into it, although some employees are expressing concern over the new open office design. It's designed to encourage collaboration, but it may not be ideal for coders and others who may need quieter, more private environments to focus on their work. One rumor claims Apple's chip chief Johny Srouji was so opposed to the layout that he demanded Apple build a separate building with a more private layout for his team.

Apple Leaks iPhone 8 and HomePod Details, Strong AAPL Earnings, AirPods Shortage, 4K iTunes Content? - MacRumors

logo.png
feature.jpg
Late last week, Apple mistakenly released an internal beta version of the HomePod operating system to a public server, and given the HomePod will run a version of iOS, a number of details about the iPhone 8 have been discovered in the firmware.

Among the interesting details about the iPhone 8 discovered in the HomePod firmware so far are a glyph apparently representing the iPhone 8's general design and evidence of the rumored face detection capabilities, details about a split status bar and tap-to-wake functionality, a "SmartCamera" feature that could automatically recognize different types of scenes and perhaps optimize camera settings, and signs that Apple Pay might be able to be authorized using facial recognition.

We've also seen a sketchy leak of a claimed SIM removal card insert for the iPhone 8 and some interesting concepts of how the iOS 11 interface might deal with the "notch" at the top of the iPhone 8's display where the earpiece, camera, and sensors are located. Finally, make sure to check out our video taking a look at some of these recent leaks.

HomePod Firmware Reveals Further Details on Apple's Smart Speaker
default.jpg In addition to the iPhone 8, the HomePod firmware of course also includes some new details on the HomePod itself. Some of the discoveries include the revelation that the speaker runs a full version of iOS with an internally named "SoundBoard" app serving as the shell for internal apps such as Music and Podcasts, no sign of third-party app support, and accessibility features such as VoiceOver.

Further digging within the HomePod firmware revealed that the display on the top of the speaker has a resolution of 272 x 340 pixels, although it is unclear what will be shown on the display beyond the Siri waveform seen in demos and press materials so far. Developers have also discovered sound files within the firmware giving a taste of what users will hear when alarms and timers go off or when interacting with the speaker. And of course, we've also put together a video summarizing the recent findings.

Apple Reports 3Q 2017 Results: $8.7B Profit on $45.4B Revenue, 41M iPhones, iPad Sales Up 28% Over Last Quarter
default.jpg Apple this week announced its financial results for the June quarter, beating analyst expectations nearly across the board, perhaps most significantly in iPad sales, which were up 28 percent from the previous quarter and 15 percent over the year-ago quarter.

During the earnings conference call, Tim Cook addressed a number of interesting topics including his most optimistic words yet on the "big and profound" development that is augmented reality and Apple's focus on autonomous systems as a core technology beyond vehicles. In response to the strong earnings, Apple's stock soared to a record high during after-hours trading on Tuesday and the start of regular trading on Wednesday.

Apple Listing Select Movies as 4K and HDR in iTunes Purchase History
default.jpg There have been a few rumors about Apple working on an updated Apple TV capable of supporting higher-resolution 4K video content, and a recent discovery by a MacRumors forum member may support that notion. iTunes purchase and rental histories are now showing some films as "4K, HDR" even though the downloaded files remain of lower resolution.

With the increasing popularity of 4K TVs and the rollout of HDR (high dynamic range) technology to increase color and contrast, it makes sense for Apple to begin providing content in these formats. By itself, the new mentions of 4K and HDR don't necessarily mean support is coming to the Apple TV, but it makes sense and with 4K Apple TV rumors already circulating, we may indeed be getting closer to an update for the set-top box.
