Sketchy Video Shows Possible iPhone SE 2 With Glass Back and Headphone Jack
default.jpg It's hard to put much stock in it given the number of knockoffs and fakes floating around, but a new video purportedly shows the so-called "iPhone SE 2," an update for Apple's smallest phone.

A report last week claimed the new iPhone SE could be powered by A10 chip and lack a headphone jack, but today's video clearly shows a headphone jack in the usual location. It also appears to show a glass back that would allow for wireless charging.

The latest rumors come after Apple registered eleven unspecified new iPhone models with a regulatory agency in Russia, leading to speculation of an update in the next several weeks.

Tim Cook Insists Merging Mac and iPad Would Result in Compromises
default.jpg Those worried that Apple is aiming to merge the Mac and iPad platforms may be able to rest a bit easier, as Tim Cook reiterated in a recent interview his stance that doing so would result in unacceptable compromises.

"We don't believe in sort of watering down one for the other," Cook said, noting that he generally uses a Mac at work and an iPad while at home and on the road. The two platforms serve different purposes, and merging them would mean "you begin to make trade-offs and compromises."

Gold iPhone X Evidence, Swollen Apple Watch Batteries, iMac Pro Repair Controversy, Apple Warns About Leaks - MacRumors

logo.png
In a bit of an interesting turn of events, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission this month revealed that Apple did indeed plan on launching a gold variant of the iPhone X, but it's yet to see the light of day.

The revelation came from documents filed by Apple with the FCC last fall, covering technical specifications and wireless emissions for new devices. Part of each submission includes internal and external photos of the test device, and as it turns out, Apple used a gold iPhone X for testing purposes. The photos were under a 180-day confidentially period for competitive purposes, which is why they weren't revealed to the public until this month.

The use of a gold iPhone X in the FCC submission suggests that Apple planned to release the gold model alongside the silver and space gray options, up until fairly close to the launch date. Rumored production difficulties for the gold color led Apple to scrap the option at launch, and it hasn't appeared as a mid-cycle addition. At this point, it's likely we won't see it until the second-generation iPhone X debuts around September, presuming Apple can solve its issues.

Popular YouTuber Says Apple Won't Fix His iMac Pro Damaged While Disassembled
default.jpg Popular YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips this week posted a controversial video addressing a situation in which Apple has refused to repair an iMac Pro that had received accidental damage. The channel had purchased an iMac Pro at launch and disassembled it for a review, but in the process of reassembling the machine, the display, logic board, and power supply were damaged.

Apple has refused to repair the machine, even with the channel acknowledging it was at fault and willing to pay for repairs. From Apple's perspective, the company may be unwilling to take on the burden and repair warranties involved in fixing a machine that was completely taken apart.

Leaked Apple Memo Warns Employees About Leaking Info to Media
default.jpg Apple recently shared a cautionary memo on its internal website for employees, warning about leaking information to the media. The memo, which naturally leaked to the press, notes that Apple discovered 29 leakers from among its employees, contractors, and supply chain partners in 2017, with 12 of those being arrested.

The memo outlines how employees can be "played" by the media and groomed to provide confidential information, and Apple says leaks impact the entire company from those working on affected products to overall product sales and competitive intelligence.

Apple May Offer Two 6.1-Inch iPhone Models in 2018 With Price Tag as Low as $550
default.jpg For months, rumors have suggested this year's main iPhone lineup will consist of three new phones — a second-generation iPhone X, a larger "iPhone X Plus," and an all-new 6.1-inch LCD model. According to a new report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, that 6.1-inch model could come in two variants, a standard one priced in the $550–$650 range and a second one that accepts dual SIM cards in the $650–$750 range. The dual-SIM variant could prove popular in markets like China where customers routinely use multiple carriers.

In other iPhone news, the Eurasian Economic Commission this week added a total of eleven new iPhone model numbers to its regulatory database. The database has been a reliable source for identifying upcoming products, but it's unclear exactly what these models are. Each iPhone model typically has about three distinct model numbers to account for regional variations in cellular technology, so the new entries could constitute as many as four new iPhones. It seems a bit early to be the main 2018 lineup that is expected to be introduced in September, but it's also too many model numbers to be an iPhone SE refresh.

iPhone Cracking Methods Like GrayKey Box Can Guess a Six-Digit Password in 11 Hours on Average
default.jpg GrayKey is an iPhone cracking tool that's been gaining significant notice recently as it appears to be seeing wide adoption by law enforcement agencies. The box can reportedly crack locked iPhones even running the latest operating system versions.

According to a recent report, GrayKey is able to crack six-digit passcodes in an average of 11 hours, making it fairly simple for law enforcement agencies in possession of the box to access locked phones. As a result, privacy and security researchers are recommending that users consider using more complex passcodes such as 8- or 10-digit codes or alphanumeric codes that significantly increase the number of possible codes. Of course, longer and more complex passcodes are harder to remember and take longer to type in, so there's a trade-off to be considered when deciding on which type of passcode to use.

(PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8, Lackluster HomePod Sales, 32-Bit Mac App Warnings - MacRumors

logo.png
On Sunday, we received a tip that Apple would be launching (PRODUCT)RED versions of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus the following day, and indeed the announcement did happen on Monday, with orders opening on Tuesday and deliveries coming at the end of the week.

Apple also released a hot new ad for the special edition iPhone that now comes with a black front instead of the white front seen on the red iPhone 7 and 7 Plus last year. Select media outlets have already gone hands-on with the new phone, which looks fantastic.

Unfortunately, we didn't get a red iPhone X, although Apple did launch a $99 (PRODUCT)RED folio case for iPhone X owners.

Apple Cuts HomePod Orders After Sales Prove to Be Lackluster
default.jpg Apple is cutting manufacturing orders for the HomePod following lackluster sales, reports Bloomberg, with retail sources saying many stores are only selling a few units per day.

While HomePod is generally regarded as having excellent sound quality, its $349 price tag is far higher than competing Amazon Echo and Google Home speakers, and Siri's capabilities fall short of Alexa's and Google's.

A new supply chain report today supports Bloomberg's claim of production cuts, and also reiterates a rumor that Apple is working on a cheaper version of the HomePod to launch later this year.

Apple Reminds Developers App Updates Must Support 64-Bit Starting June 2018, Warns Customers About Unoptimized Apps
default.jpg Progressing along its path to end support for 32-bit apps on macOS, Apple yesterday reminded developers that as of June 1, all new app updates submitted to the Mac App Store must be 64-bit.

Apple is also rolling out a new warning for consumers running macOS 10.13.4 to let them know of the upcoming changes. Starting today, users launching 32-bit apps will see warnings letting them know the apps are "not optimized" for current systems and should be updated by their developers.

Apple followed a similar series of steps with iOS until support for 32-bit apps was completely eliminated as of iOS 11.

The Six Oldest Products Apple Still Sells Today
default.jpg Following last week's announcement that the redesigned Mac Pro won't arrive until 2019, we took a look at the six oldest major products still sold by Apple. The oldest ones are the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule, which haven't been updated since mid-2013. Apple has reportedly ceased development on AirPort products but it's unclear when Apple will choose to discontinue the current models in favor of third-party options.

Other aging products in Apple's lineup include the Mac Pro, Mac mini, MacBook Air, iPod touch, and iPad mini. Some like the iPod touch and iPad mini seem to be reaching the end of their natural lifecycles as consumers shift to other products to meet their needs, while others like the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Pro would appear to have some life left in them if Apple would only update them.

iOS 11.3 Released, New Mac Pro in 2019, Apple Developing Its Own Chips for Macs - MacRumors

After several months of testing, Apple last week released iOS 11.3 to the public, bringing a number of improvements including tools for monitoring battery health, new ARKit 1.5 for improved augmented reality experiences, business chat in iMessage, and more. Two features that had been in at least some beta builds but which didn't make the cut for the final release were Messages on iCloud and AirPlay 2.

In addition to iOS 11.3, Apple also released macOS 10.13.4, watchOS 4.3, tvOS 11.3, and HomePod software version 11.3. One of the key features for macOS 10.13.4 is support for external graphics processors (eGPUs), and Apple published a detailed support document outlining recommended hardware for that purpose.

Apple's Revamped Mac Pro to Launch in 2019
Apple this week provided TechCrunch with an update on its plans for the Mac Pro, revealing that the completely revamped professional workstation is targeted for a 2019 release. It was just about a year ago that Apple first disclosed plans for an all-new Mac Pro, but at the time didn't reveal any specifics on a release date beyond "after 2017." Many had hoped for a 2018 release, but it looks like Apple still has quite a bit of work to do on the product, which means the current 2013 edition of the Mac Pro will likely live on for up to six years before a new model is released.

Apple Plans to Ditch Intel and Use Custom Mac Chips Starting in 2020
Rumors of Macs eventually shifting from Intel processors to ARM-based chips like those in iOS devices have persisted for years, and it sounds like the move is coming close to reality, with Bloomberg reporting that Apple is aiming to begin the transition as soon as 2020.

Coincidentally, Intel this week announced a number of new processors, including some appropriate for the 15-inch MacBook Pro (such as a new Core i9-branded chip), potentially the first quad-core 13-inch MacBook Pro, and perhaps even a new Mac mini. New desktop chips also fill out a lineup that would allow for updated iMacs.
