Apple Invites Media to September 12 Event at Apple Park: 'Let's Meet at Our Place' Rumors have been building for weeks, but it's now official: Apple's iPhone 8 media event will be held on Tuesday, September 12, and it'll be at the new Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park headquarters campus that remains under construction. In addition to the iPhone 8, we're also expecting to see new "iPhone 7s" models, an updated Apple Watch with optional LTE connectivity, and a new Apple TV with support for 4K HDR content. The event kicks off at 10:00 AM Pacific Time, and we'll have full coverage.    Read Full Article Popular Stories Aug 31, 2017 iOS 11 Dock and Gesture Controls to Replace 'iPhone 8' Home Button Entirely We've known for some time that the iPhone 8 will do away with the traditional Home button, but a new report from Bloomberg describes how it may not even include a virtual one, replacing the familiar functionality with a new iPad-style Dock and gestures. We also learned a bit more about how the status bar will wrap around the camera and sensor notch at the top of the phone. Some designers have already mocked up what such a layout might look like. In other iPhone 8, rumors The New York Times supports long-standing rumors that it will be expensive, with the cheapest model likely starting around $999. Rumored wireless induction charging for all three new iPhones expected next month will reportedly be limited to 7.5 watts, half of the current Qi standard. Finally, after Samsung's unveiling of its new Note 8 last week, we went hands-on with the new Android smartphone and compared it to an iPhone 8 dummy model. The video has been blowing up on YouTube, so be sure to check it out if you haven't already.   Read Full Article Apple to Debut Apple TV With 4K HDR Support at September Event Last week, Bloomberg confirmed that Apple will indeed release an updated Apple TV at its September media event, with the key upgrades being support for 4K and high dynamic range (HDR) content. In order to take advantage of the upgraded capabilities for the Apple TV, users will need access to content, and Apple has been working with content providers to upgrade the quality of their video. Unfortunately, negotiations are proving difficult as Apple wants to sell 4K new releases through iTunes at the same price point of around $20 it uses for HD movies. Film studios are, however, reportedly seeking a higher price point of $25–$30. And in one bit of bad news, it sounds like the Amazon Prime Video app for Apple TV that Apple announced at WWDC in June may not be ready for next month's event. The event seemed like a logical time to launch the app considering the updated box being released, but Apple hasn't given a more concrete timeframe than "later this year."   Read Full Article Former Apple Employee Thinks Touch Bar Shouldn't Be Forced on Users Who Want Highest-End MacBook Pro Apple's redesigned MacBook Pro has generated significant controversy since its launch last fall over a number of features, including the Touch Bar that brings shortcuts, Touch ID, and more right to the keyboard. Former Apple employee Chuq Von Rospach created a bit of a stir this week with his argument that the Touch Bar is of questionable utility and even users who want high-end MacBook Pro models should be able to get them without the feature. Von Rospach argues that Apple needs to either go all-in on the Touch Bar and roll it out to all machines including desktops or else "roll it back" and offer high-end MacBook Pro configurations without it.   Read Full Article Apple Seeds Ninth Beta of iOS 11 to Developers Yes, that's right: Apple has just seeded its ninth developer beta and eighth public beta version of iOS 11 for testing, just days after the previous version. Consider it a "Plus" version of the new iPhone 8 form factor. Other iPhone 8 rumors this week included a claim of 64/256/512 GB storage options and a number of photo leaks including the A11 chip, display assembly and other components, and a 3D sensing camera. We also went hands-on with some new iPhone 8 cases and a dummy model, yielding a good idea of how the new phone and accessories may look together. Finally, while the all-new iPhone 8 will undoubtedly be the star of the show, Apple is expected to also introduce new "iPhone 7s" models next month. The new U-series chips are all quad-core designs, and if Apple deems the graphics powerful enough they could come to the 13-inch MacBook Pro and perhaps the MacBook Air and Mac mini should Apple choose to update those machines. Apple will be joining the market in December with its HomePod, previewed at WWDC back in June.   Read Full Article AccuWeather for iOS Sent Location Data to Monetization Company Even When Location Sharing Was Off Popular iOS weather forecasting app AccuWeather found itself in some hot water this week after it was discovered that the app was sending users' location information to monetization company Reveal Mobile, even when the users denied explicit permission for the app to access location information. In the absence of this permission, Reveal Mobile's tools built into the AccuWeather app wouldn't collect your GPS location but would still collect your Wi-Fi router name and BSSID, which can frequently be used to find your location fairly accurately. After AccuWeather and Reveal Mobile initially released a joint statement attempting to explain "misinterpretation" of the SDK tools, AccuWeather yesterday updated its app to completely remove the Reveal Mobile SDK.   Read Full Article

Apple Watch and iPhone 8 Rumors, New Betas, Intel's Ice Lake Chips - MacRumors

Apple Watch 3 Won't Have 'Obvious Change' to Form Factor, LTE to Be Main Selling Point While the iPhone will undoubtedly be the highlight of a likely September media event, signs are pointing toward the launch of an updated Apple Watch as well. Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a couple of reports about the "Series 3" model in recent days, saying there will be no "obvious change" to the form factor compared to current models. Kuo also says LTE cellular connectivity will be the main selling point, although it is unlikely users will be able to make direct phone calls from the watch. There is a possibility that VoIP services like FaceTime or Skype could work though. The updated Apple Watch is said to be in the "final testing phase," with mass production likely starting soon. One interesting question about this likely September event is where it will be held. The Steve Jobs Theater at the new Apple Park campus would seem to be the clear first-choice location, but the campus remains under construction, so it's unclear if it will be ready in time to host an event. Created by Samir Mezrahi to address the problem of iPhones automatically playing the first song alphabetically in the user's library when plugging into a car stereo, the 99-cent track entitled "A a a a a Very Good Song" gives you an opportunity to cue up your desired playlist without having to hear the exact same song every time you plug in your iPhone in the car. iPhone 8 Dummy Hands-On and Rumors, New Betas, Apple Watch 3 With LTE - MacRumors

Hands-On With an iPhone 8 Dummy Model iPhone 8 rumors are flying fast and furious as we've reached roughly one month to go until its expected introduction, and we just got our hands on an iPhone 8 dummy model that gives a great idea of what the device might look like. Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says he now believes all three iPhones (OLED iPhone 8 and more traditional iPhone 7s and 7s Plus models) will launch simultaneously in September. He had previously believed the iPhone 8 launch would be delayed until October or November, but he and others are now seeing improving signs of mass production starting on all three models. Kuo also believes that all three iPhones will only be available in three colors: black, silver, and gold. Meanwhile, Apple's prematurely released HomePod firmware continues to reveal details on the iPhone 8, including evidence of face-scanning capabilities working even when the device is laying flat on a table, signs that notifications will be muted when you're already looking at your device, details on facial recognition extending to payments and third-party apps, and specifics on how the virtual home button will behave. Daring Fireball's John Gruber followed up with his own claims that the new Apple Watch will include an "all-new form factor," which would be a departure from previous rumors that the next update would again focus on internal changes rather than external ones. Gruber later clarified that he "wouldn't bet the house" on the information he heard from "a little birdie," so it'll be very interesting to see what happens with the Apple Watch. We're expecting them to look similar to the current iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models in most regards, with the most significant change said to be a shift to glass backs in order to support wireless inductive charging. YouTuber Danny Winget has gotten his hands on a dummy model of the iPhone 7s Plus and put together a nice video comparing it to both the iPhone 7 Plus and an iPhone 8 dummy. In the video, he takes a look at how the shift to a glass back changes the look of the device and helps better hide the antenna bands on the casing.   Read Full Article Updated iPhone SE Rumored for Early 2018 Launch While we're expecting three new large-screened iPhone models next month, Apple may also be planning an early 2018 update for its smaller iPhone SE model. Rumors on the iPhone SE have been few and far between, so it's hard to get a handle on what's in store for it, but the latest reports suggest it could have similar internal specs to the iPhone 7 such as an A10 chip and 12-megapixel rear camera. Rumors suggest it may be manufactured by Apple's partner Wistron, which recently launched iPhone production in India.   Read Full Article Some Apple Park Employees Said to Be Dissatisfied With Open Office Design Apple is still putting the finishing touches on its massive new Apple Park campus and just starting to move employees into it, although some employees are expressing concern over the new open office design. It's designed to encourage collaboration, but it may not be ideal for coders and others who may need quieter, more private environments to focus on their work. One rumor claims Apple's chip chief Johny Srouji was so opposed to the layout that he demanded Apple build a separate building with a more private layout for his team.   Read Full Article
