Apple Seeds First macOS Sierra 10.12.4 Beta With New Night Shift Mode
Alongside iOS 10.3, Apple this week also seeded the first beta build of macOS Sierra 10.12.4 to developers and public beta testers. The most notable new feature in the forthcoming update is Night Shift mode, which automatically shifts your display color to warm tones in the evening to help reduce exposure to blue light that can disrupt sleeping patterns. The feature was introduced a year ago in iOS 9.3 and is now making its way to the Mac. Make sure to check out our hands-on video showing how it works and the various adjustments for timing and color temperature that are available.

Apple Releases macOS Sierra 10.12.3 With Graphics Fixes for 2016 MacBook Pro
With the new betas receiving significant attention, it's easy to overlook Apple's public releases from earlier in the week. Perhaps the most notable one was macOS 10.12.3, which brings a number of welcome fixes including several related to graphics problems on the new MacBook Pro.

In addition to macOS 10.12.3, Apple also released iOS 10.2.1, watchOS 3.1.3, and tvOS 10.1.1 to the public. The watchOS release was the first since December's watchOS 3.1.1 update that bricked some users' watches and had to be pulled by Apple.

Apple Exploring Two-Step Touch ID and Facial Recognition System for iPhone 8
Apple is said to be exploring multi-factor authentication methods for this year's iPhone and beyond, perhaps integrating Touch ID and facial recognition. With the so-called iPhone 8 said to be adopting an OLED display on at least some models, new Touch ID technology would be required and Apple may be shifting to new optical-based sensors for the job.

Separately, some cold water has been thrown on rumors and speculation of long-range wireless charging technology from Energous being used in the iPhone 8. A group of analysts has laid out its case that Apple is more likely to use in-house technology that would be more similar to the Apple Watch and other short-range wireless charging technologies that require contact with charging mats or similar devices.

'Theater Mode' Coming to Apple Watch
One rumor had suggested iOS 10.3 would bring a new "Theater Mode" of some sort to iOS devices, but it actually looks like the feature is coming to Apple Watch. The feature is mentioned in Apple's developer notes for watchOS 3.2 beta, an update Apple has yet to release, and it will allow users to quickly mute sounds and disable raise-to-wake on the screen in order to avoid disruptions in movie theaters. In this mode, haptic alerts will still be generated and users will be able to manually wake the watch, but unintended activation of sounds and light will be prevented.

Apple Adopts San Francisco Typeface for Apple.com Website
For the launch of the Apple Watch, Apple created a new typeface known as "San Francisco," and over time the company has extended that typeface to iOS, macOS, and elsewhere. In a quiet change this week, the company finally updated its website at apple.com to use the San Francisco typeface, yielding bolder and easier to read text than the Myriad typeface the company had used for many years. The change has been implemented throughout the vast majority of Apple's website, from the front page to product and store pages to support documents.

MacBook Pro and MacBook Rumors, iPhone 8 Water Resistance, New Apple Pencil Coming? - MacRumors

Noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new report outlining his expectations for Apple's notebook updates in 2017, starting with a minor update to the MacBook line in the second quarter of the year. The update is expected to bring Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors and a new 16 GB RAM option.

Perhaps more significant is the MacBook Pro, which will reportedly see a similar upgrade to Kaby Lake chips in the second half of the year. It appears Apple may also be looking to address complaints over the current model's RAM limit of 16 GB by introducing a new high-end model carrying 32 GB of RAM. The move would require Apple to use desktop RAM in that model, which would impact battery life but could be an acceptable tradeoff for some users.

Speaking of battery life, Consumer Reports has officially recommended the current MacBook Pro after it redid its battery tests following Apple's patching of a Safari bug. The magazine's new testing found consistent battery life of between 15 and almost 19 hours. You almost certainly won't get that much out of it in the real world, but at least the testing is now generating consistent results.

Next iPhone Said to Have Even Better IP68-Rated Water Resistance
One of the key features of the iPhone 7 is its IP67 water resistance rating, which means it can stand up to being immersed in up to a meter of water for up to 30 minutes and remain functional. According to a new rumor, however, this year's iPhone will take things one step further with an IP68 rating that will provide even better water resistance.

We've also been hearing a bit more about potential facial and gesture recognition in the next iPhone. Laser and infrared sensors could help the device to recognize the user and let them perform some controls with simple gestures. Rumors of wireless charging are also gaining steam, with Apple's supply chain reportedly preparing to provide components for the feature.

Second-Generation Apple Pencil Rumored for March of 2017
Apple may be gearing up to release a new Apple Pencil alongside updated iPads as soon as March. What exactly the new Apple Pencil would include is unclear, but there have been rumors of greater app support for the Apple Pencil and some of Apple's patents hint at features like improved antenna technology and magnets to allow you to stick the Apple Pencil to an iPad.

While this and other reports have indicated new iPads are likely to arrive in the March or April timeframe, a new rumor claims the updated tablets may not debut until the second half of the year. Apple is expected to debut an updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro and a new 10.5-inch iPad Pro, while a 9.7-inch iPad may continue to be offered as an entry-level option.

AT&T Shuts Down 2G Network and Ends Cellular Connectivity for Original iPhone
Ten years after Apple first showed off the iPhone, AT&T has finally shut down its 2G data network used by the device. The discontinuation has been years in the making, but it still caught some people off guard, including San Francisco's transit system, which was using it to offer live arrival predictions for buses and light rail trains. AT&T plans to use the spectrum freed up by the shutdown of its 2G network to continue expanding its LTE network and look toward 5G technology.

Court Rules Apple Can Be Sued for Monopolizing iPhone App Market
A U.S. appeals court last week ruled that Apple can be sued over claims it has monopolized the market for iOS apps by requiring all third-party apps to be sold through the App Store. By not allowing other marketplaces to sell iOS apps, Apple has eliminated potential price competition, according to the plaintiffs. The ruling is not a judgment against Apple on the matter, only meaning that the case can proceed.

In other App Store news, Apple has raised prices by at least 25 percent in the United Kingdom as it has adjusted currency exchange rates to account for both a strengthening U.S. dollar and a weakening British pound.

Apple Possibly Planning to Launch iPhone 6 Battery Exchange Program
Apple's existing repair program for addressing battery issues with the iPhone 6s could be expanded to include the iPhone 6, according to a new report, but other sources are indicating no such plans are in the works. Apple has offered battery repair programs for both the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 5 to assist users whose devices may be suddenly shutting down or experiencing shorter than expected battery life. No specific details on iPhone 6 issues Apple may be looking at have been shared, but based on the response in our forums it seems quite a few users have experienced problems.

iPhone's 10th Anniversary, MacBook Pro Battery Debate, iPad Pro and iPhone 8 Rumors - MacRumors

It's hard to believe, but it's been ten years since Steve Jobs took to the stage at Macworld San Francisco and shocked the world by introducing the iPhone. Apple uncharacteristically celebrated the milestone with a press release while Phil Schiller offered his thoughts on the past, present, and future of the device that was "earth-shattering" upon its arrival and remains "unmatched" today.

Stories of Apple engineering teams competing over whether the original iPhone should be based on an iPod interface or adopt a full-screen multi-touch user experience have circulated for years, and over the past week we've seen some photos and videos showing off some of those prototype ideas. Sparked by the leaks, "iPod Father" Tony Fadell shared some details on how that early development work transpired and exactly what is being depicted in the recent leaks.

Consumer Reports Retesting MacBook Pro Battery Life After Apple Says Safari Bug to Blame
Last month, influential magazine Consumer Reports declined to recommend the new MacBook Pro, in large part due to significant inconsistencies observed in battery life testing ranging from under four hours to over 18 hours. Shortly after, Apple said it was working with Consumer Reports to understand the strange results, which had not been seen in Apple's own testing.

Less than three weeks later, Apple and Consumer Reports have issued statements indicating they have discovered the source of the problem, which was a rare bug in Safari that will be fixed in macOS 10.12.3. The bug is only triggered by using a developer setting to disable browser caching in Safari, something Consumer Reports did for its testing to ensure that the battery life assessment loaded fresh pages throughout the test. Consumer Reports is currently redoing its testing with the fix in place and will report back once it has full results.

A 10.5-Inch iPad Pro Could Match the 12.9-Inch Model's Resolution and the iPad Mini's Pixel Density
We've been hearing rumors for a while about a new iPad Pro in the 10-11 inch range, with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last week again saying he expects Apple will introduce the device in the coming months. The new iPad Pro would be the same physical size as the current 9.7-inch model, but would be able to pack a larger screen due a nearly bezel-less design.

Rumors of the display size have ranged from 10.1 inches to 10.9 inches, but new analysis suggests 10.5 inches might be the sweet spot. It could yield a display with the same 2732x2048 resolution of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but at the same 326 pixels per inch density as the iPad mini. That would give users the workspace size of Apple's largest tablet but in a much more portable body.

Apple to Forge 'iPhone 8' Chassis Frame From Stainless Steel Instead of Aluminum
Rumors about this year's "iPhone 8" continue to trickle in, and a new report says the rumored glass front and back panels of the device will be sandwiched around a forged stainless steel frame rather than the machined aluminum Apple has used in the casings of its recent models.

There is still some confusion about just what Apple has planned for this year's iPhone, with sources suggesting the all-new iPhone 8 with an OLED display could come in a single size alongside more traditional "iPhone 7s" models that would be updates based on the existing iPhone 7 and 7 Plus designs.

LG's UltraFine 5K Display Is a Worthy Companion to the New MacBook Pro, Even Without Apple's Looks
With Apple getting out of the display business, the company has turned to LG to help fill that void, and the partnership has yielded new 4K and 5K UltraFine displays optimized to work with the new MacBook Pro. We've had a chance to spend some time with the new 5K version, and we've come away very impressed with the screen itself, which should be identical or very similar to the one used in Apple's 27-inch iMac.

What's much more debatable are the display's looks, which include a primarily matte black plastic enclosure and a large black metal foot. It's definitely not an Apple design, but opinions vary widely with some feeling it's a hideous look while others find it thankfully unobtrusive.

Regardless of which direction you lean on the looks, if you're interested in picking one up, make sure you place your order through Apple by the end of the March in order to secure the current 25 percent discount that brings the cost of the UltraFine 5K down to $974. The 21.5-inch 4K model carries a temporary price of $524.

Apple Rumored to Begin Seeding iOS 10.3 With New 'Theatre' Mode on January 10
iOS 10.2.1 is still in beta testing as an upcoming bug fix update, but it looks like Apple's getting ready to start to seeding testers with versions of iOS 10.3, a more significant update. According to Sonny Dickson, Apple is aiming to begin seeding builds of iOS 10.3 on January 10, and the update will include a new "Theatre" mode accessible through a "popcorn-shaped" button in Control Center. What exactly that mode will entail is unknown, but if Dickson is correct we don't have long to wait to find out.

Energous Says Its Truly Wireless Charging Technology Will Ship Later This Year — In Next iPhone?
Apple's been rumored to be working on some sort of wireless charging technology for this year's "iPhone 8," with speculation suggesting Apple could be partnering with Energous, a company that's been teasing a deal with a major manufacturer. Energous this week said that its flagship wireless charging technology will ship later this year, which could point toward inclusion in the next iPhone if rumors are true, but we'll have to see whether it pans out.

In other recent iPhone news, a sketchy video shows off what the rumored "Jet White" iPhone 7 might look like, while Apple is said to be cutting back production of its iPhone lineup even more than initially anticipated. There had been some speculation that Samsung's Galaxy Note7 recall might attract a significant number of new iPhone users, but analysts are saying the iPhone 7's lack of "compelling" features has led most Note7 owners to stick with Samsung for their replacement devices.

New Apple Watch to Launch in Fall 2017 With Improved Battery Life But No Major Design Changes
We haven't heard a lot about what to expect for the next-generation Apple Watch so far, but a new rumor suggests the Series 3 family will arrive in the fall of this year, likely alongside the next iPhone. Unfortunately, the rumor says we shouldn't expect any major design changes, with the most significant focus being on improving battery life. Other rumors have suggested the next Apple Watch could include cellular connectivity and perhaps some new sensors, so we'll keep a lookout as rumors develop over the coming months to see where things are headed.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Calls AirPods 'A Runaway Success,' Says 'It's Been a Great Holiday'
Tim Cook last week toured the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, where he made a few comments about Apple's holiday prospects and referred to the company's new AirPods as a "runaway success" while noting Apple is "making them just as fast as we can."

AirPods have generally received strong reviews, but some users have been having issues with rapid battery drain on their charging cases. A few of those users have had success fixing the issue by resetting their AirPods, but others who have tried that tactic have seen little or no improvement. Apple hasn't commented on the issue, so it's unclear if the company is planning any updates or suggestions to address it.
