iPhone SE and 9.7" iPad Pro Now Available, iOS 9.3 Problems, New Mac Notebooks Soon? - MacRumors

Following last week's unveiling of the iPhone SE and 9.7-inch iPad Pro, members of the media got a chance to try out the devices for an extended period of time for review purposes. Reviewers have found the iPhone SE to be an impressive device with excellent battery life for those who prefer a smaller screen size, while the new 9.7-inch iPad Pro has garnered positive reviews for its "mind-blowing" power and top-notch features, although many users will still struggle to view it as a true PC replacement.

Just today, Apple officially launched the two new devices in the first wave of countries, with early orders arriving in customers' hands and retail outlets starting to sell the iPhone SE and new iPad Pro. We're already seeing teardowns of the iPhone SE, revealing a mix of internal components reused from the iPhone 5s, 6, and 6s that helps Apple hit the $399 starting price for the new iPhone.

Apple Releases iOS 9.3.1 With Fix for Web Link Crashing Bug
In the wake of Apple's release of iOS 9.3 following last week's media event, users encountered a host of problems with the new software update that Apple is only just now recovering from.

Initially, users faced several issues related to activation during the update process, problems that resulted in Apple temporarily pulling the update for many older devices. Apple quickly released one revised update specifically for the GSM cellular version of the iPad 2, but it took several more days before Apple was able to re-release a tweaked version of iOS 9.3 for all other affected devices.

Even then, problems with iOS 9.3 remained, with many users running into a problem where web links refused to open on their devices. The issue, which was related to certain third-party apps integrating with the deep linking features of iOS, was resolved today with the release of iOS 9.3.1.

Apple Said to Ship New 'Ultra-Thin' 13" and 15" MacBooks by June-July
Last week's media event included no news on the Mac front, which left a lot of Apple users still waiting for updates. According to a new report, Apple is planning to launch new "ultra-thin" 13-inch and 15-inch notebooks by the end of the second quarter, meaning a launch at WWDC in June is likely. It's unclear exactly which notebook family the new machines will belong to, as they are said to resemble the Retina MacBook and be thinner than the MacBook Air, while the display sizes suggest MacBook Pro models. One concept shows what a thinner MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air-like form factor might look like.

In other Mac notebook news, files in OS X 10.11.4 have been discovered making reference to an "Early 2016" Retina MacBook that has yet to be released, suggesting we may see an update to that lineup before the end of April. Regardless of the exact timing, all of Apple's Macs are in need of updates, so we should be seeing a good number of announcements in the coming months.

Potential First Photo of iPhone 7 Plus Shows Dual-Lens Camera and Smart Connector
Rumors have suggested the larger iPhone 7 Plus will include a dual-lens rear camera, and a new leak of what is claimed to be the actual device shows a large oval opening housing two lenses, as well as a potential Smart Connector on the rear of the device. While the leaked photo is a bit blurry, Feld & Volk has put together some fantastic renderings showing what it might look like in real-life.

In other recent iPhone 7 and 7 Plus news, we've seen what's said to be the actual dual-lens camera module destined for the large model, and a computer screen shot reportedly showing details of the rear shell design for the smaller model.

Third-party iPhone 7 cases are also starting to surface, revealing a nearly exact fit for the body of the iPhone 6s but with some differences such as a larger and slightly shifted camera opening and an opening in the bottom edge that appears too narrow for a standard headphone plug. Finally, a pair of photos claim to show the battery for the iPhone 7, which is roughly the same size and capacity as the iPhone 6 battery and slightly higher capacity than the iPhone 6s battery.

The malware, which threatens to hold a user's files hostage by encrypting them and demanding payment to unlock them, was bundled into popular BitTorrent client Transmission when the developers' server was compromised. Apple and Transmission's developers moved quickly to address the threat, and as a result, and it appears only about 6,500 users downloaded the infected software before it was removed.

iPhone SE Case Renderings From Spigen Support iPhone 5s-Style Design
With less than two weeks to go until the expected introduction of the new 4-inch "iPhone SE," conflicting rumors about the device's design persist. Third-party case manufacturers have developed two separate designs for the device, with one appearing very similar to the iPhone 5s and the other looking more like a smaller iPhone 6. Apple's Proposed Dual Camera Interface Brought to Life in Video Demo
Apple has been rumored to be bringing a dual-lens rear camera to at least the larger model of the iPhone 7 later this year, and we dug up a recent Apple patent that shows one possibility for how the lenses might work together. Our video demo shows how lenses with different focal lengths could allow for side-by-side video of both wide angle and zoomed content. We don't know if this is what Apple will ultimately do, but it's definitely a very cool idea the company has been looking at.

In other iPhone 7 news, we're now starting to see the first third-party cases surfacing. It's hard to tell much about the overall look of the device, but the cases do support rumors of Apple removing the traditional headphone jack and perhaps replacing it with a second speaker.

iPhone SE and iPhone 7 Rumors, Media Event Moved to March 21, Apple Breaks Macs' Ethernet - MacRumors

Apple's upcoming 4-inch iPhone, thought to be called either the "iPhone SE" or "iPhone 5se," continued to be a major focus of rumors over the past week, with frequently reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo weighing in with his beliefs that the device will carry very similar specs to the iPhone 6s including a 12-megapixel rear camera. Kuo believes the device will be priced at $400-500, in line with current iPhone 5s pricing. We did get our first major part leak this week in the form of the iPhone SE display panel, which appears to confirm no support for 3D Touch.

Otherwise, rumors about the device's overall appearance continue to conflict, with some advocating something very similar to the iPhone 5s design while others place it appearing much more like a smaller iPhone 6. We've seen some renderings of the different possibilities and even taken our own shot at reconciling some of these rumors. We're also starting to see the first actual iPhone SE cases from third-party manufacturers, but both design possibilities are represented in the available cases.

High-End iPhone 7 Plus With Dual Cameras Could Be Called 'iPhone Pro'
We've been hearing rumors that at least some models of the larger iPhone 7 Plus expected to be introduced around the usual September timeframe may include a dual-lens rear camera, and a new report claims this unique variant could carry an "iPhone Pro" name to distinguish it from the regular iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Dual-lens cameras like on this "iPhone Pro" and Huawei's upcoming P9 smartphone are expected to usher in a new wave of "killer apps" that can take advantage of the technology for a variety of purposes.

A more general rumor focused on the iPhone 7 supports some other recent claims, including that the device will include a flush rear camera and a second speaker replacing the headphone jack. This new report also claims that the iPhone 7's Lightning port will be slimmer, but it's unclear whether this would mean any difference for the connector and cables themselves.

Security Update Briefly Breaks Ethernet Port on iMacs and MacBook Pros
Apple late last week pushed out a quiet automatic security update that amazingly blacklisted the company's own Ethernet driver for a number of Macs, breaking Ethernet functionality once those machines had been rebooted. The company quickly fixed the problem with another update, but it was remarkable that the errant update slipped through at all. Apple acknowledged the error in a support document and provided instructions to help users make sure their machines have been updated to the patched version.
